Ammonium is a fundamental nutrient for phytoplankton growth in seawater and is a key component of the microbial loop. Ammonium measured in parallel with other nutrients is crucial in understanding the small temporal scale changes in oceanographic ecology. Color deficiency tests are usually produced by means of polygraphy technologies and help to diagnose the type and severity of the color deficiencies. Due to different factors, as lighting conditions or age of the test, standard characteristics of these tests fail, thus not allowing diagnosing unambiguously the degree of different color deficiency. A biodegradable material, zein, is proposed as a reagent delivery platform for biokits and biosensors based on alkaline phosphatase (ALP) activity/inhibition in the presence of phosphatase substrates. The immobilization and release of both the substrate and/or the active ALP, in a biodegradable and low-cost material such as zein, a prolamin from maize, and in combination with glycerol as plasticizer have been investigated. Port-wine stain (PWS) is a benign capillary malformation that most commonly occurs in the head and neck. It is present at birth and progresses over time. It is formed by progressive dilatation of post-capillary venules and is associated with hypertrophy and nodularity with increasing age, leading to cosmetic disfigurement and psychological aggravation. It is caused by genetic mosaicism in GNAQ and GNA11 genes. Histopathology is the gold standard for assessment of PWS but it is invasive and may cause scarring. The endoscopic detection of Barrett’s epithelium remains challenging even for modern endoscopy. This is mainly due to the fact that Barrett’s epithelium is often patchy and can easily be overlooked by conventional endoscopy with random biopsies. Thus, chromoendoscopy and magnifying endoscopy were introduced to facilitate diagnosis of Barrett’s epithelium and Barrett’s associated neoplasias.
