Soft tissue sarcoma in Italy: From epidemiological data to clinical networking to improve patient care and outcomes

2019

Sarcomas are rare malignant neoplasms that develop from mesenchymal cells and include a heterogeneous and large group of histological subtypes that may occur at any anatomical site. Soft tissue sarcomas (STS), the focus of this review, account for ≈70‒80% of sarcomas and represent <1% of all cancers. The heterogeneity of STS applies to both their topography and morphology, and 5-year survival can vary widely depending on disease stage and the complex interplay between anatomical site and histology for different STS subtypes. The rarity and heterogeneity of STS, together with other factors, such as the lack of clinical expertise often lead to difficulties and delays in making an accurate …

Outcome of Bleb Revision With Autologous Conjunctival Graft Alone or Combined With Donor Scleral Graft for Late-onset Bleb Leakage With Hypotony Afte…

2020

Prcis Treatment of leakage with ocular hypotony after trabeculectomy with mitomycin C (MMC) can be safely achieved through conjunctival patch alone or combined with donor scleral graft in cases of melted underlying sclera. Purpose To report outcomes of 2 surgical approaches for treating ocular hypotony in eyes with blebs with late-onset leakage after standard trabeculectomy with MMC. Methods Thirty consecutive cases with bleb leakage and hypotony underwent bleb revision surgery between 2009 and 2014 by the same surgeon (J.W.) at the Department of Ophthalmology of the Mainz University Medical Center, Germany. In 18 patients, an autologous conjunctival patch graft was applied. In 12 patients,…

Revision Surgery for Primary Spinal Tumor: Too Little Too Late

2017

Primary tumors of the spine are rare and represent less than 8% of all bone tumors.1 Because of their low prevalence, they are often misdiagnosed and consequently managed improperly. Unlike metastatic spine tumors, some primary tumors can be cured. Spine tumors are classified according to their histology. How- ever, patient age and anatomic location add relevant information on the biological behavior of the tumor. In children, the most frequent spinal tumors are malignant and are represented by neuroblastoma and sarcoma. In adults, the most common spinal tumors are multiple myeloma, osteosarcoma, histiocytosis, chordoma, and hemangioma. These tumors often develop in the anterior vertebral b…

Surgical management of acute angle-closure glaucoma after toric implantable contact lens implantation

2006

A case of pupillary block after implantation of an implantable contact lens (ICL) is reported, and surgical management and prevention are discussed. In a myopic patient, the best corrected visual acuity in the right eye was 20/50 with -15.50 -3.00 x 175. After uneventful implantation of an ICL, painful acute glaucoma developed with an intraocular pressure beyond measurable values. Apparent anterior vaulting of the ICL suggested a sizing problem. In a situation of a mid-wide dilated pupil, immediate explantation of the ICL was performed. Then, using a preoperative iris photography as guidance, an anterior chamber iris-claw toric phakic intraocular lens was implanted. On postoperative examina…

Disappearance of malachite green residues in fry of rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) after treatment of eggs at the hatching stage

2009

Abstract The disappearance of malachite green (MG) residues was determined in fry of rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) after six repeated treatments of the eggs at the hatching stage with MG oxalate at exposure levels of 1, 3 and 6 mg l− 1 for 30 min. Fry samples were taken from newly hatched fry (0 days post-hatch, d.p.h.) and at regular time intervals at 16, 31, 43, 57 and 96 d.p.h. The residues of MG and its major metabolite, leucomalachite green (LMG), were found to accumulate in the fry after MG treatments of eggs, with the highest residue levels being determined in the newly hatched fry. After exposures of 3 mg l− 1 MG, mean concentrations of 1170 ± 106 µg kg− 1 and 276 ± 38.6 µg kg…

Images perceived after chromatic or achromatic contrast sensitivity losses.

2010

Purpose. We simulate how subjects with losses in chromatic and achromatic contrast sensitivity perceive colored images by using the spatiochromatic corresponding pair algorithm. Methods. This is a generalized version of the algorithm by Capilla et al. (J Opt Soc Am (A) 2004;21:176 –186) for simulating color perception of color deviant subjects, which incorporates a simple spatial vision model, consisting of a linear filtering stage, with a band-pass achromatic filter and two low-pass chromatic ones, for the red-green and blue-yellow mechanisms. These filters, except for the global scaling, are the subject’s contrast sensitivity functions measured along the cardinal directions of the color s…

Dynamics, alterations, and consequences of minimally invasive intraocular pressure elevation in rats.

2014

PURPOSE: An important, yet not exclusive, aspect of primary open angle glaucoma is elevated intraocular pressure (IOP) profiles within fluctuations and pressure peaks. The study aimed at establishing minimally invasive methods for recurrent IOP elevation in rats to investigate the impact of IOP dynamics and pathomorphologic retinal alterations during and after IOP elevation. METHODS: Intraocular pressure was elevated unilaterally in Long Evans rats to a level of ≈35 mm Hg for 1 hour in a total of 30 manipulations within 6 weeks, by using two methods: (1) suction-cup oculopression and (2) loop-adjusted oculopression. Retinal thickness (RT) was measured via optical coherence tomography (OCT),…

COVID-19 and the impact on the cranio-oro-facial trauma care in Italy:An epidemiological retrospective cohort study

2021

The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has deeply modified the organization of hospitals, health care centers, and the patient’s behavior. The aim of this epidemiological retrospective cohort study is to evaluate if and how the COVID-19 pandemic has determined a modification in cranio-oro-facial traumatology service. Methods: The dataset included hospital emergency room access of a six-month pre-pandemic period and six months into pandemic outbreak. The variables collected were: patient age, gender, type of emergency access with relative color code, Glasgow Coma Scale Score, type of discharge. Results: 537 vs. 237 (pre-pandemic vs. pandemic) patients accessed the hospital emergency room an…

Tumor response assessment by modified Choi criteria in localized high-risk soft tissue sarcoma treated with chemotherapy.

2012

BACKGROUND. The objective of this study was to compare the prognostic relevance of Response Evaluation Criteria in Solid Tumors (RECIST) versus Choi criteria for the assessment of response in patients with high-risk soft tissue sarcoma of the extremities or trunk wall who received preoperative chemotherapy with or without radiotherapy in a phase 3 trial. METHODS. Patients received 3 cycles of preoperative epirubicin þ ifosfamide with or without radiotherapy. The diagnostic concordance between RECIST and Choi criteria and their correlation with overall survival (OS) and freedom from progression (FFP) were evaluated in a univariate Cox regression model. RESULTS. In 243 of 321 eligible patient…
