Clinical manifestations of head and neck cancer in pediatric patients, an analysis of 253 cases in a single Brazilian center
2021
Pediatric head and neck cancer (PHNC) is rare and its nonspecific clinical manifestations may often lead to delayed diagnosis. We aimed to describe the signs, symptoms, and clinicopathological characteristics of PHNC. Medical records were retrospectively reviewed for all PHNC cases diagnosed from 1986 to 2016 affecting patients aged 19-years and younger from a tertiary referral center in Brazil. Demographic variables, anatomical site of primary tumors, histopathological diagnoses, signs and symptoms, and patterns of misdiagnosis were collected and interpreted by statistical and descriptive analysis. A total of 253 PHNC cases were included. The mean age was 9.3 years and male patients were m…

Fibrosarcoma originating in the mandible
2006
Fibrosarcoma is a malignant mesenchymal neoplasm of fibroblasts that rarely affects the oral cavity and can cause local recurrences or metastasis. In this article we describe a case of primary fibrosarcoma in the mandible in a 16-year-old girl. Microscopically the tumor showed an intense proliferation of spindle-shaped cells, varying little in size and shape and arranged in parallel bands, partly crossing each other, the mitotic activity was increased and there was nuclear pleomorphism. Immunohistochemically the cells only showed immunoreactivity for vimentin and negativity for S-100 protein, CD 68, cytokeratin cocktail, HMB-45, CD34, pan actin HHF 35, desmin, smooth muscle actin and epithe…
Recurrent intussusception of small bowel in a young patient due to metastases from cardiac undifferentiated pleomorphic sarcoma: A first ever case re…
2020
Highlights • Metastatic undifferentiated pleomorphic sarcoma (Malignant Fibrous Histiocytoma) is a rare entity in the visceral organs. • We report a case of a metastatic primary cardiac undifferentiated pleomorphic sarcoma which presented with a recurrent small bowel intussusception in a young man. • Laparotomy by a small midline incision performed on the same day identified an intussusception of a 15-cm section of small intestine caused by a 4-cm intraluminal metastasis from undifferentiated pleomorphic sarcoma. • Metastasis intussusception in the small intestine is a very rare condition and they are part of differential diagnosis in patient with a history of tumor who present with intussu…
Advantages of surgical simulation in the surgical reconstruction of oncological patients
2018
Background Stereolithography, which consists of computer-aided designed/computer-aided manufactured (CAD-CAM) and computer simulations, is a manufacturing technologies used for the production of definitive models and prototypes printed in three dimensions, and is widely used in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. Surgical procedures using models made by these technologies offer several advantages. Material and Methods This article describes three clinical cases of our experiences with patients diagnosed with squamous cell carcinoma and mandibular osteosarcoma, who underwent surgical removal of the lesions and subsequent mandibular reconstruction with a free fibula graft using surgical guides. R…
Proteome alterations in aqueous humour of primary open angle glaucoma patients.
2019
Aim To unravel the primary open angle glaucoma (POAG) related proteomic changes in aqueous humour (AH). Methods Totally 35 patients listed for cataract surgery (controls: n=12, age: 67.4±13.6y) or trabeculectomy for POAG (n=23, age: 72.5±8.3y) were included. AH samples of those patients were obtained during cataract surgery or trabeculectomy. AH samples were subsequently pooled into the experimental groups under equal contribution in terms of protein amount of each individual patient. Protein samples were analyzed by a linear trap quadrupol Orbitrap Mass Spectrometry device with an upstream liquid chromatography system. The obtained raw data were analyzed using the Maxquant proteome softwar…
Ewing sarcoma of the oral cavity. A review
2017
Objectives A review is made of the clinical, diagnostic, therapeutic and survival characteristics of Ewing sarcoma (ES) of the oral cavity. Material and methods A systematic literature search was carried out, with restrictions referred to time (1960-2014), language (English and Spanish) and type of study (case reports, letters, datasets, reviews). The following MeSH terms and boolean operators were used: Ewing AND Sarcoma AND [tongue, jaw, maxilla, cheek, condyle OR temporomandibular, floor AND mouth, gum OR gingiva, palate OR palatal, lip, uvula, head AND neck]. Results Seventy-one cases of ES of the oral cavity were documented from 53 articles. The main differences versus ES of other loca…
Addressing Delicate and Variable Cancer Morphology in Spectral Histopathology Using Canine Visceral Hemangiosarcoma
2021
Spectral histopathology has shown promise for the classification and diagnosis of tumors with defined morphology, but application in tumors with variable or diffuse morphologies is yet to be investigated. To address this gap, we evaluated the application of Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) imaging as an accessory diagnostic tool for canine hemangiosarcoma (HSA), a vascular endothelial cell cancer that is difficult to diagnose. To preserve the delicate vascular tumor tissue structure, and potential classification of single endothelial cells, paraffin removal was not performed, and a partial least square discrimination analysis (PLSDA) and Random Forest (RF) models to classify different tiss…
Uniform response of c-raf expression to differentiation induction and inhibition of proliferation in a rat rhabdomyosarcoma cell line
1990
The clonal rat rhabdomyosarcoma cell line BA-HAN-1C is composed of proliferating mononuclear cells, some of which spontaneously fuse to terminally differentiated myotube-like giant cells. Both the induction of differentiation by retinoic acid (RA) and by sodium butyrate (NaBut), as well as the inhibition of proliferation by fetal calf serum (FCS)-depleted medium uniformly resulted in the same effects. There was a significant (p less than 0.001) inhibition of proliferation and induction of cellular differentiation, as evidenced by a significant (p less than 0.05) increase in creatine kinase activity. Furthermore, after exposure to RA-supplemented or FCS-depleted medium, a significant (p less…
