Abstract Background: The role of azathioprine (AZA) in the treatment of active Crohn's disease (CD) is still controversial. This study examined whether AZA combined with standard prednisolone therapy improved the therapeutic outcome compared with monotherapy with prednisolone. Methods: Forty-two patients with a Crohn's Disease Activity Index (CDAI) of > 150 were randomized into two groups. Both received 60 mg of prednisolone daily in a tapering regimen to a maintenance dose of 10 mg. In addition, group 1 received 2.5 mg AZA/kg body wt and group 2 received a placebo over the whole study period of 4 months. Hirsutism in women is often explained on the basis of abnormal peripheral androgen metabolism. To determine whether serum markers of ovarian, adrenal, or peripheral androgen production may be helpful determinants in the treatment of hirsutism and to compare the efficacy of treatment with dexamethasone or spironolactone, 20 hyperandrogenic hirsute patients were treated for up to 2 years. Despite their young age, women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) have increased cardiovascular risk. Besides normal concentrations of low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol, dyslipidemia is very common and includes elevated triglyceride levels and low high-density lipoprotein cholesterol concentrations. Recent findings also showed that women with PCOS have qualitative LDL alterations, with increased levels of atherogenic small, dense LDL particles. A young, healthy female patient, with no history of chronic paranasal infection had undergone root canal treatment of the right maxillary first molar. Combined therapy with acyclovir and adenosine arabinoside in herpes simplex encephalitis.

We report a case of herpes simplex encephalitis (HSE) with initial coma and severe left-sided hemiparesis in which combined treatment with adenine arabinoside and acyclovir was followed by complete recovery. This favorable result is discussed in view of the literature of HSE treatment including experimental studies on antiviral activity of both drugs. Combined treatment may be useful in severe cases of HSE.

The disappointing results in bench-to-bedside translation of neuroprotective strategies caused a certain shift in stroke research towards enhancing the endogenous recovery potential of the brain.
