Numerical Study of Forced MHD Convection Flow and Temperature Around Periodically Placed Cylinders

2016

In this paper we consider 2D stationary boundary value problems for the system of magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) equations and the heat transfer equation. The viscous electrically conducting incompressible liquid moves between infinite cylinders with square or round sections placed periodically. We also consider similar 2D MHD channel flow with periodically placed obstacles on the channel walls. We analyse the 2D forced and free MHD convection flow and temperature around cylinders and obstacles in homogeneous external magnetic field. The cylinders, obstacles and walls of the channel with constant temperature are heated. The distributions of electromagnetic fields, forces, velocity and temperatur…

Tonnenkonkremente im Ductus choledochus bei einer 4 Jahre vergessenen, impaktierten Endoprothese

2006

We report on a 67-year-old female patient who presented in July 2005 with sudden onset of pain in the right upper abdomen. The patient had undergone cholecystectomy in 1987. Because of recurrrent complaints in the right upper abdomen, a pigtail stent was placed into the common hepatic duct in 2001. When the patients presented now, the laboratory tests including liver enzymes were within normal ranges. Endoscopic retrograde cholangiogi aphy, however, revealed a remaining 10-French, impacted double pigtail endoprothesis that was obstructed by sludge as well as multiple giant bile duct stones of 20 to 30 mm in size. The giant stones could be finally removed by the combined use of ESWL and endo…

Emission standards versus immission standards for assessing the impact of urban drainage on ephemeral receiving water bodies

2010

In the past, emission standard indicators have been adopted by environmental regulation authorities in order to preserve the quality of a receiving water body. Such indicators are based on the frequency or magnitude of a polluted discharge that may be continuous or intermittent. In order to properly maintain the quality of receiving waters, the Water Framework Directive, following the basic ideas of British Urban Pollution Manual, has been established. The Directive has overtaken the emission-standard concept, substituting it with the stream-standard concept that fixes discharge limits for each polluting substance depending on the self-depurative characteristics of receiving waters. Stream-…

Polypoid anal melanoma. A case report and review of the literature

2016

Ano-rectal melanoma is an uncommon finding in patients complaining of rectal bleeding and/or anal mass often misinterpreted as a haemorroidal pile.A 55-years-old woman, complaining of rectal bleeding, frequent anal pain and anal mass suspected for haemorroidal thrombosis was referred for evaluation and possible treatment. A brown polypoid mass arising from the anal canal/lower rectum with a maximum diameter of 6 cm was diagnosed. The hystological examination of the neoplasm, transanally removed, revealed the presence of a polypoid melanoma partially involving the resection margin. Nor metastases nor limph-node involvement were found at the total-body CT scan and at a CT-PET. C-KIT examinati…

Cytotoxicity of apigenin toward multiple myeloma cell lines and suppression of iNOS and COX-2 expression in STAT1-transfected HEK293 cells.

2020

Apigenin is one of the most abundant dietary flavonoids that possesses multiple bio-functions.This study was designed to determine the influence of apigenin on gene expressions, cancer cells, as well as STAT1/COX-2/iNOS pathway mediated inflammation and tumorigenesis in HEK293-STAT1 cells. Furthermore, the cytotoxic activity toward multiple myeloma (MM) cell lines was investigated.Bioinformatic analyses were used to predict the sensitivity and resistance of tumor cells toward apigenin and to determine cellular pathways influenced by this compound. The cytotoxic and ferroptotic activity of apigenin was examined by the resazurin reduction assay. Additionally, we evaluated apoptosis, and cell …

The Long and Winding Road to Useful Predictive Factors for Anti-EGFR Therapy in Metastatic Colorectal Carcinoma: The KRAS/BRAF Pathway

2010

Monoclonal antibodies targeting the epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) have improved outcomes for patients with metastatic colorectal carcinoma. Among patients not carrying activating mutations in the KRAS gene, only a limited number will experience tumor response to these therapeutic agents. The role of BRAF mutations in determining resistance to this treatment is emerging through preclinical and clinical studies. Standardization and validation of laboratory mutation analysis is needed to allow an optimal use of anti-EGFR therapies in the management of colorectal carcinoma. Clinical single-arm and randomized studies were conducted both in first-line and refractory settings to evaluate…

A Multicentre, Randomised, Controlled Trial of a Combined Clinical Treatment for First-Episode Psychosis

2021

Introduction: There is evidence that early intervention contributes to improving the prognosis and course of first-episode psychosis (FEP). However, further randomised treatment clinical trials are needed. Objectives: The aim of this study was to compare the efficacy of a combined clinical treatment involving Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) as an adjunctive to treatment-as-usual (TAU) (CBT+TAU) versus TAU alone for FEP. Patients and methods: In this multicentre, single-blind, randomised controlled trial, 177 participants were randomly allocated to either CBT+TAU or TAU. The primary outcome was post-treatment patient functioning. Results: The CBT+TAU group showed a greater improvement in…

Ion mobility spectrometry and high resolution mass-spectrometry as methodologies for rapid identification of the last generation of new psychoactive …

2018

A new drug trafficking trend has been observed in the last years by the introduction in the black market of new psychoactive substances (NPS) in order to difficult competent authority controls. In this study, ion mobility spectrometry (IMS) and high-resolution mass-spectrometry (HRMS) were proposed as vanguard and rearguard methodologies for the rapid identification of the last generation of NPS in seizures. The combined use of IMS and HRMS has been evaluated through the analysis of 24 NPS seized from 2016 to 2018 in Valencia (Spain) to demonstrate the utility of this approach. The characteristic reduced mobility (K0) values for seized NPS were determined and mass-mobility relationships wer…
