Patented and commercialized applications
2021
Abstract The commercialization of high added-value compounds recovery from food wastes deals with several issues such as laboratory research, scale-up problems, protection of intellectual properties, and development of market-destined applications. These issues are described in this chapter wherein a collection of commercially available compounds recovered from food by-products is presented. Verification of market existing products matching with patented processes was conducted using patent applicant name in each case. However, this matching as well as production characteristics may not be correct in all cases, as most companies typically are secretive about their methods of production and …
Machine learning study of the molecular drivers of natural product prices
2021
The price of chemicals is a very complex variable. It can be impacted by production costs but also by market and managerial factors, which may have complex relationships with molecular characteristics and the state of technology and society. In this work, we explore the extent to which molecular characteristics can help explain natural product prices with the aid of machine learning tools. We interpret models trained on molecular descriptors and molecular fingerprints. These models can explain a notable proportion of the variation in prices, suggesting that production and separation costs are a major contributor to current natural product prices. Some molecular properties stand out as key p…
Towards a theory of transnational academic capitalism
2013
This article draws attention to the relative lack of theoretically and methodologically elaborated approaches to understand and explain the complex relations between transnationalization of higher education and globalization seen especially from the point of view of global capitalism. The main aim of this article is to contribute to the construction of a theory of transnational academic capitalism (TAC). A theory of TAC argues that those networks, practices and activities that are blurring the boundaries between higher education, markets and states are increasingly becoming transnational without supposing that this transformation implies that local and national levels are insignificant in s…
Composite Material Recycling Technology – State-of-the-Art and Sustainable Development for the 2020s.
2020
Recently, significant events took place that added immensely to the sociotechnical pressure for developing sustainable composite recycling solutions, namely (1) a ban on composite landfilling in Germany in 2009, (2) the first major wave of composite wind turbines reaching their End-of-Life (EoL) and being decommissioned in 2019–2020, (3) the acceleration of aircraft decommissioning due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and (4) the increase of composites in mass production cars, thanks to the development of high volume technologies based on thermoplastic composites. Such sociotechnical pressure will only grow in the upcoming decade of 2020s as other countries are to follow Germany by limiting and ba…
Electric Mobility in Portugal: Current Situation and Forecasts for Fuel Cell Vehicles
2021
In recent years, the growing concern for air quality has led to the development of sustainable vehicles to replace conventional internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles. Currently, the most widespread technology in Europe and Portugal is that of Battery Electric Vehicles (BEV) or plug‐in HEV (PHEV) electric cars, but hydrogen‐based transport has also shown significant growth in the commercialization of Fuel Cell Electric Vehicles (FCEV) and in the development of new infrastructural schemes. In the current panorama of EV, particular attention should be paid to hydrogen technology, i.e., FCEVs, which is potentially a valid alternative to BEVs and can also be hybrid (FCHEV) and plug‐in hybrid…
The production and marketing of organic wine in Sicily
2002
This paper aims at a better knowledge of the organic wine sector in Sicily. In the last few years regulations 2078/92 and 2092/91 have had a wide diffusion in the agricultural regional context; a rapid increase of areas and farms justify the attention paid by the European union policies. Two aspects of the sector have been examined: the influence on the implementation of Reg. 2078/92 with regard to diffusion of the organic wine sector in Sicily; and a group of farms in the west of Sicily have been analysed to verify the scenario of organic wine, and the strategy used in the commercialization of organic production. The results show a very interesting framework for organic wine. This is a sec…
ÉTICA DE LA EMPRESA DEPORTIVA: ¿UTOPIA O NECESIDAD?
2020
The modern sport has become a spectacle sport that attracts masses eager for sporting events. In this way, the sport becomes a profitable business capable of generating large economic income that enrich elite athletes, as well as sports businessmen. In this article I propose an ethics of the sports company, as part of the ethics applied to sport, that you see the positive side a commercialization, discarding the negative and that enhances the social responsibility of the sports company in a globalized context.
Hungary:Filling the Gaps in the Strategic State Sector
2017
The aim of this article is to introduce the evolution of the private sport sector in Hungary. First, taking a historical viewpoint into account, the emergence of the private sport sector will be sketched from the 1800s to date. It is reasonable to say that with some exceptional periods such as the state socialist era, the private sport sector in Hungary has always been present, but its scope and forms of function have been adapted to the current social, political, and economic environments. Second, statistical data will be presented to show the structure and volume of the private sport sector using data from 2013. Third, the ‘development path’ of sport acts, which reflects the professionali…
“To Own, or not to Own?” A multilevel analysis of intellectual property right policies' on academic entrepreneurship
2017
The political environment around universities has led them to create an infrastructure to manage academic inventions. While some consider that the advantages of a university entrepreneurial structure outweigh any potential negative effects, others question their detrimental effect on academic scientists’ entrepreneurial behavior. However, this debate remains unresolved as none of these two views have been fully empirically supported. Using multilevel models for a population of 2230 professors in 27 universities in Canada (82 individuals per unit on average), we test the effect of three features of institutional intellectual property right policy characteristics, namely, property rights (own…
Nowa gospodarka ery informacji
2016
