From Cottesloe (1961) to Trondheim (2016): The journey of the Dutch Reformed Church back into the ecumenical family of the World Council of Churches

2018

This article presents an analysis of the journey of the Dutch Reformed Church (South Africa) back into the ecumenical fellowship of the World Council of Churches (WCC). The first part contains a brief historical review of the relationships between the WCC and the Dutch Reformed Church family, underlining the fact that the Dutch Reformed Church family in South Africa is a founding member of WCC and that it was never excluded from WCC fellowship; rather, this church itself resigned membership in the WCC after the Cottesloe Consultation (1961) at the pressure of the South African government of that time. The last part presents in detail the process of the readmission of the Dutch Reformed Chur…

Science in space vs space science: The European utilisation of spacelab∗

1999

Abstract Spacelab is the conventional name given to a manned laboratory to be carried onboard NASA's Space Shuttle, which was built in Europe under the aegis of the European Space Agency (ESA). This paper deals with the initiatives undertaken in Europe to establish a utilisation programme for Spacelab, in particular for its first flight, planned as a joint ESA/NASA demonstration mission. Two main factors will be discussed, which prevented ESA from establishing a sizeable Spacelab utilisation effort. Firstly, owing to the cost escalation of the Spacelab development programme and to NASA's charging policy for access to the Shuttle system, which did not foressee any preferential treatment to E…

Workshop on Sources of Polarized Leptons and High Brightness Electron Beams

2011

This volume contains the proceedings of the International Workshop on Sources of Polarized Leptons and High Brightness Electron Beams (PESP2010). The workshop was hosted by the University of Bonn from 21–24 September 2010. PESP2010 has been conducted as satellite workshop preceding the International SPIN Physics Symposium (SPIN2010). In view of the expanding and challenging field of the production of high brightness lepton beams, the selection of workshop topics was extended to cover the demands of modern accelerator developments and applications. As novel light sources such as FELs and ERLs place new requirements on the properties of unpolarized beams in terms of brightness and intensity, …

Audit Committee Independence and Auditor-Manager Disputes

2020

This paper analyzes the role of audit committee independence in resolving disagreements between management and the auditor regarding financial reporting. The common intuition suggests that the audit committee must be independent from management to be able to support the auditor against the manager's manipulation attempts. We build a one-period strategic model to show that this intuition is valid only if overinvestment is a bigger concern to shareholders than underinvestment. Otherwise, any audit committee will agree with management to avoid underinvestment. The audit committee's optimal independence level, which can be fully independent or partially dependent, is affected by investment effi…

Fugitives in transit. The Spanish Republican exile through Portugal (1936-1950)

2017

Despite scant attention from historiography, Portugal played an important role as a way station on the road to exile for many Republicans during and after the Spanish Civil War. The situation in the neighbouring country was not easy for these people, as Antonio Oliveira de Salazar’s regime —officially allied with Franco’s Spain— did not recognize them as political refugees, but as illegal immigrants to be returned to Spain, which would have catastrophic consequences for many of them. Through the analysis of abundant primary sources in archives from Spain, Portugal, Mexico and the United States, we seek to understand the details of this Portuguese stage of the exile. We discover how, despite…

Ethical and Civic Education and the Social Commitment of University Students

2011

Recent decades have seen growing international concern about the lack of social commitment among young people, shown in their failure to participate in social affairs, scant interest in formal politics, and low turnout at elections.
First, the international framework which forms the background to our paper is outlined. The ethical and civic education which university students receive is discussed, in the context of the social mission of the university and the European Higher Education Area. We then move on to examine one of the most promising initiatives in this field: service learning. We conclude with a proposal containing some suggestions of relevance to higher education. The need …

Phase 3 randomized study of adjuvant anastrozole (A), exemestane (E), or letrozole (L) with or without tamoxifen (T) in postmenopausal women with hor…

2017

515 Background: Uncertainty still exists regarding the optimal schedule of adjuvant treatment of breast cancer with aromatase inhibitors (AI) and no trial has ever compared all the three AI. Methods: FATA-GIM3 is a multicenter, open label, 2x3 factorial phase 3 randomized study of adjuvant A, E and L upfront (UP - for 5 years) or sequentially (SEQ - for 3 years after 2 years of T) in postmenopausal HR breast cancer pts. Two comparisons were planned: UP vs SEQ and A vs E vs L. DFS (including local or distant relapse, second breast or non-breast cancer, DCIS and death, whichever came first) was the primary end-point; 2% at 5 yrs (corresponding to a HR of 0.79) was defined as the minimum diff…

The locked psychiatric ward: hotel or detention camp for people with dual diagnosis.

2013

The concepts of autonomy and liberty are established goals in mental health care; however, involuntary commitment is used towards people with mental health and substance abuse problems (dual diagnosis). To explore how patients and staff act in the context of involuntary commitment, how interactions are described and how they might be interpreted.Ethnographic methodology in a locked psychiatric ward in Norway. Two parallel images emerged: (a) The ward as a hotel. Several patients wanted a locked ward for rest and safety, even when admission was classified as involuntary. The staff was concerned about using the ward for real treatment of motivated people, rather than merely as a comfortable hot…

Human traffickers frequently take advantage of operative protocols that make them unpunishable pursuant the Italian Criminal Law because according to Art. 6 of the Italian Penal Code and International Convention on the High Sea jurisdictional powers cannot be exercised when the conduct is committed on the High Sea. So illustrating the territorial limitations of the efficacy of Criminal Law the research focuses on the hermeneutical solution given by the Court of Cassation that apparently with the intent of pursuing a more effectivity of the Criminal response recurred to the controversial category of the indirect offender in order to sanction smuggling conducts that enjoy the rescue intervention of the Italian authorities to reach their criminal aims. In turn in order to better identify the Italian jurisdiction in the crime of Art. 12 T.U. imm. I propose to correctly apply the concorso di persone (art. 110 c.p.) and the reato eventualmente permanente. The difficulties of a dogmatic framing together with the trend towards a universalistic validity of the jurisdictional powers when human rights are involved may recommend an interpretation of Art. 7 of the Italian Penal Code to cover a wider protection of human rights according to interpretive solutions of § 6 of the German Penal Code.Settore IUS/17 - Diritto Penale

The cjeu judgment in the huawei/zte case: getting around the problem of frand commitments and competition law

2017

Sebbene la questione attenga all’applicazione dell’art.
