Forms and Functions of the Real Estate Market of Palermo (Italy). Science and Knowledge in the Cluster Analysis Approach
2016
The analysis of the housing market of a city requires suitable approaches and tools, such as data mining models, to represent its complexity which derives on many elements, e.g. the type of capital asset-house is a common good and an investment good as well, the heterogeneity of the urban areas—each of them has own historical and representative values and different urban functions—and the variability of building quality. The housing market of the most densely populated area of Palermo (Italy), corresponding to ten districts, is analyzed to verify the degree of its inner homogeneity and the relations between the quality of the characteristics and the price of the properties. Five hundred set…
Re-thinking news: Information design and “antibody” contents
2022
Rethinking news and producing quality (“antibody”) contents as a remedy against the rampant proliferation of fake news (and the related erosion of democracy), starting from the values and approaches shared by the worlds of design and journalism can be - and certainly are - an effective and interesting way forward. The fertile confluence of the body of knowledge (and know-how) of these two disciplines has already produced excellent results, starting with design-driven experiments tried and tested in several significant experiences in Italy and abroad. As Paolo Ciuccarelli stated, “once again, designers as ‘meaning makers’ find today in the narrative of the world of the infosphere a design gr…
When the arts inspire businesses: Museums as a heritage redefinition tool of brands
2018
International audience; While the literature has mainly considered brand museums as communication tools or complex retail environments, this article analyses them through a heritage framework and suggests that brands can use heritage technologies of the arts for their own purposes. The case study of the brand museum of the Laughing Cow highlights the heritage technologies the brand uses to endorse two heritage roles: an inter-generational memory role based on the transmission of the brand's history and a community representation role through spaces and objects. As a consequence, this research sheds light on how brands can come to be accepted as heritage objects. By using heritage technologi…
Teaching the Sensitive Stuff: Does Industry Matter? Issues in Corporate Social Responsibility and Sustainability
2015
In this chapter, Teaching the sensitive stuff: Does industry matter? Issues in Corporate Social Responsibility and Sustainability, Harald Knudsen and Alessandro Frigerio discuss the relation between business behaviour and morality. It is a provocative chapter that makes important links with CSR debates. The message on the core themes of Higher Education and Sustainability lies in making students aware of how misuse of power and influence can develop within businesses. The chapter argues against a theoretical approach that assumes that the market functions equally well in all situations. Rather, experience shows that industry matters.
Assessing the Effect of the Economy for the Common Good System on Business Performance
2023
Extant literature has pointed to organizational hybridity to lever sustainable business transformation. Moreover, some authors hold that there is a possible trade-off between sustainability and performance. However, there is still little empirical evidence on the impact that such sustainability-driven hybridization systems have on performance. Thus, the present study’s main goal is to fill this gap by providing empirical evidence on the impact of the implementation of the Economy for the Common Good, as a sustainability-driven organizational system, on business performance. To do so, the authors relied on a sample of 206 businesses from five European countries. Then, the authors follo…
The Common Good Balance Sheet, an Adequate Tool to Capture Non-Financials?
2019
In relation to organizational performance measurement, there is a growing concern about the creation of value for people, society and the environment. The traditional corporate reporting does not adequately satisfy the information needs of stakeholders for assessing an organization&rsquo
Pace, conflitto e progresso in Jacques Maritain
2022
The article develops an analysis of Maritain's reflections on peace, in particular those carried out between 1946 and 1966. In the three parts of the contribution, the problems relating to the construction of a lasting peace among peoples are addressed. The war in Ukraine has forcefully returned to stir European consciences. The ideal position that Maritain assigns to the project of a world government through a supra-national democratic entity is remarkable. Project based on the spiritual and moral development of human conscience and on the will of peoples. The uselessness of war is linked to Maritain's Christian vision of history, in connection with the personalistic foundation of politics.
