The labour market consequences of self-employment spells:European evidence
2008
Hundreds of thousands of Europeans enter self-employment each year, but because self-employment spells are typically brief, many of them exit soon after entry. We examine how those who return to paid-employment fare on the labour market using the European Community Household Panel (ECHP). Like earlier evidence for the US, ours indicate that, in general, brief spells of self-employment do not increase average hourly earnings upon return to paid-employment. For highly educated men, an additional year of self-employment actually decreases their earnings by 4-5% relative to a year of continued wage employment. We also find that brief spells of self-employment are associated with increased proba…
An empirical study about the effect of cultural problematic on organizational learning in alliances
2003
In an environment where favoring organizational learning is imperative, the option of business cooperation is considered an optimal means to transmit knowledge between companies and to encourage the generation of new ones. But differences in organizational cultures of the cooperation partners can make this process difficult. Through an empirical study of small and medium‐sized companies that had established international cooperation agreements during 1997 and 1998 in the Valencian community (Spain), the influence of the differences in size and in national culture of the partners in organizational learning is observed.
Education and skill mismatches: wage and job satisfaction consequences
2013
PurposeThis paper aims to highlight the relevance of examining education and skill job‐worker mismatches as two different, although simultaneous, phenomena of the labor market. Most previous literature does not take into account skill mismatch, and a number of papers deal with both kinds of mismatches as equivalent.Design/methodology/approachSpanish data from the European Community Household Panel (ECHP) survey for the year 2001 are used to examine the degree of statistical association between both education and skill mismatches, and to estimate wage equations as well as job satisfaction equations, considering satisfaction with pay, with the type of job and overall job satisfaction, in orde…
Community Relationships and the Practice of Public Relations in Higher Education
2007
In 2004 the Finnish Universities Act was amended to include a third strand as an essential part of research and teaching. This paper focuses on relationship building to explore whether this approach would be helpful in developing university–community relationships and educational public relations. By means of a dialogic community relations model the paper suggests that different forms of social interaction and communication strategies are needed in relationship‐building, maintenance and enhancement; but, when aiming at collaborative community relationships, priority should be given to the development of the two dialogic strategies.
Balancing on a tightrope: Managing the boundaries of a firm-sponsored OSS community and its impact on innovation and absorptive capacity
2014
Realizing the innovation potential of OSS communities, firms now create or sponsor their own open source software (OSS) communities, generally as part of an open innovation strategy. However, maximizing the innovation capability of a sponsored OSS community is a challenging task since firms cannot rely on traditional hierarchical authority to control community members. Furthermore, a firm's efforts to manage its sponsored community may also impact the firm's absorptive capacity, or its ability to effectively absorb and leverage the valuable knowledge created by the community. Thus, the purpose of this article is to investigate two research questions: 1) How does the boundary management of a…
The evaluation of root fracture with cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) : an epidemiological study
2018
Background The aim of this study was evaluation of the cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) image of 50 patients at the ages of 8-15 suspecting root fracture and root fracture occurred, exposed to dental traumatic. In additionally, this study was showed effect of crown fracture on root fracture healing. Material and methods All of the individuals included in the study were obtained images with the cone-beam computed tomography range of 0,3 voxel and 8.9 seconds.(i-CAT®, Model 17-19, Imaging SciencesInternational, Hatfield, Pa USA).The information obtained from the history and CBCT images of patients were evaluated using chi-square test statistical method the mean and the distribution of the…
Mandibular talon cusps: A Systematic review and data analysis.
2014
Objectives: The purpose of the present study was to evaluate mandibular talon cusps distribution from the compre - hensive literature search and proposal of new classification Material and Methods: The study was a review of articles published in the English language from January 1960 to December 2013. The PubMed/MEDLINE/Google Scholor databases were searched electronically using "talon cusp", "dens evaginatus", "anterior teeth", mandible, "primary dentition" and "permanent dentition" as search terms in various combinations. The citation lists from the included references were subsequently examined, and a hand search was also performed in an attempt to identify additional reports. The distri…
Dental caries experience, tooth surface distribution and associated factors in 6- and 13- year- old school children from Davangere, India
2012
Objectives: The objective of the present study was to investigate the caries experience and patterns in a sample of 6- and 13- year old school children and to estimate the contributing roles of the likely risk indicators. Study design: Data were obtained from 400 (196, 6-year old and 204, 13-year old) school children. A questionnaire was sent to the children parents to measure socioeconomic, socio-demographic, and behavioral variables. Dental caries detection was performed according to the World Health Organization criteria (dmft and DMFT). The mean dmft/DMFT scores were analysed either as a continuous (calculating means and standard deviations) or as a categorical variable (providing propo…
In t…
Identifying Influential Nodes: The Overlapping Modularity Vitality Framework
2023
This paper proposes an Overlapping Modularity Vitality framework for identifying influential nodes in networks with overlapping community structures. The framework uses a generalized modularity equation and the concept of vitality to calculate the centrality of a node. We investigate three definitions of overlapping modularity and three ranking strategies prioritizing hubs, bridges, or both types of nodes. Experimental investigations involving real-world networks show that the proposed framework demonstrates the benefit of incorporating overlapping community structure information to identify critical nodes in a network.
