Abstract This study was focused on thermal properties of ethylene copolymers with di-, tri- and tetra-alkenylsilsesquioxanes (POSS) synthesized by ansa-metallocene complex. Ethylene copolymers with multi-alkenyl POSS were characterized by different thermal behavior depending on the kind of POSS comonomer and its content, as well as the copolymer structure. The copolymers differed in the incorporation way of POSS into the polymer chain (linear and crosslinked structure), content of specific unsaturation groups, molecular weight, as well as heterogeneity of polymer chain compositions. Ethylene/POSS copolymerization behavior of postmetallocene catalysts and copolymer characteristics

Copolymerization of ethylene with iso-butyl substituted monoalkenyl(siloxy)- or monoalkenylsilsesquioxane (POSS) comonomers over bis(phenoxy-imine) and salen-type titanium and zirconium catalysts was studied. It was found that the polyreaction performance was significantly depended by the kind of the catalyst and by the structure and concentration of POSS in the feed. The POSS comonomer was efficiently incorporated into the polymer chain at up to 0.2 mol %. Hyperbranched poly(glycolide) copolymers with glycerol branching points via ring-opening copolymerization

Abstract Sn(Oct) 2 -catalyzed synthesis of hyperbranched poly(glycolide) copolymers with glycerol branching points in the backbone is possible via ring-opening multi-branching copolymerization (ROMBP) of glycolide and 5HDON (5-hydroxymethyl-1,4-dioxan-2-one). Using this strategy, well-defined and soluble branched polyesters with apparent molecular weights (M n ) in the range of 1300–2000 g mol −1 and varying comonomer content (5HDON/glycolide = 30:70–70:30) were obtained. 2D NMR spectroscopy, thermal analysis and MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry confirmed the successful incorporation of both monomers and the resulting branched structure. Blends of poly(2,6-dimethyl-1,4-phenylene oxide) with styrene copolymers

Binary blends of poly(2,6–dimethyl–1,4–phenylene oxide) (PPE) with various styrene copolymers were investigated. Poly(styrene–co–acrylonitrile) (SAN), poly[styrene–co–(methyl methacrylate)] (SMMA), poly[styrene–co–(acrylic acid)] (SAA) and poly[styrene–co–(maleic anhydride)] (SMA) are only miscible with PPE when the amount of comonomer is rather small. From calculated binary interaction densities it can be concluded that the strong repulsion between PPE and comonomer limits miscibility. Copolymers of ethylene with monoalkenyl- and monoalkenyl(siloxy)silsesquioxane (POSS) comonomers – Synthesis and characterization

Abstract The hybrid ethylene/POSS copolymers were obtained using the rac -Et(Ind) 2 ZrCl 2 catalyst activated by MAO. A series of monoalkenyl- and monoalkenyl(siloxy)silsesquioxanes derivatives with different structures of reactive alkenyl substituent and types of non-reactive groups attached to the T 8 POSS cage was used as comonomers. The kind and concentration of the POSS comonomer in the reaction feed as well as extended reaction time were found to strongly influence the catalyst efficiency and incorporation of POSS units into polymer chains. Cleavable Polyethylene Glycol: 3,4-Epoxy-1-butene as a Comonomer to Establish Degradability at Physiologically Relevant pH.

Polyethylene glycol (PEG) has been used for decades to improve the pharmacokinetic properties of protein drugs, and several PEG-protein conjugates are approved by the FDA. However, the nondegradability of PEG restricts its use to a limiting molecular weight to permit renal excretion. In this work, we introduce a simple strategy to overcome the nondegradability of PEG by incorporating multiple pH-sensitive vinyl ether moieties into the polyether backbone. Characterization of semicrystalline random copolymers by small-angle neutron scattering

A new method is introduced to determine the degree of partitioning of noncrystallizable comonomer units (B units) between the two phases of a semicrystalline random copolymer. The method is based on the comparison of the intensities of small-angle neutron and x-ray scattering (SANS and SAXS, respectively). By this technique two quantities can be evaluated: the difference Δρ of the mass densities between the crystalline and the disordered regions, and the concentration fluctuations of the B units in the two phases. Photo-oxidative degradation of poly(ethylene-co-vinyl acetate)/nisin antimicrobial films

The photo-oxidative behaviour of different antimicrobial blown films based on poly (ethylene-co-vinyl acetate) (EVA) was studied. In particular, two samples of EVA containing different level of vinyl acetate comonomer (namely 14% and 28%) were used as matrices while nisin at different concentrations was used as antimicrobial agent. The degradation was followed by analyzing the changes in the spectroscopic behaviour and of the elongation at break measured in tensile tests. Moreover, changes in the antimicrobial activity of the films were followed by measuring the inhibition halo in agar diffusion tests.
