Framing in Crisis. Literature and Optical Devices in the Age of Hoffmann

2016

This book analyzes the interplay of gazes, optical devices and images in literature. Following the developments of Visual Culture studies, literary theory has expanded its original field of investigation and addresses, beyond the traditional relationship between the verbal and the visual, the influence that gazes, optical devices and images can have on literary texts. This research tries to define the literary lives of the scopic regimes of modernity: the gazes of English early modern women's writing, the optical devices in German literature between Classicism and Romanticism, and the images of the mineral world in modern French aesthetics.

2020

he life and strange surprising adventures of Arturo. Cues for a comparison with Robinson Crusoe · The article displays a comparative reading between L’isola di Arturo and Defoe’s Robinson Crusoe, inspired by a statement made by Elsa Morante in a 1957 interview after the awarding of the ‘Strega’ prize. In the first place, the press coverage of the novel is studied with particular attention to confrontations with Robinson. Secondly, I aim to trace the steps of the possibility that Morante actually took into account Defoe’s novel. Afterward, a short, comparative study concerning a possible impact of Robinson on Arturo is proposed. The confrontation goes through several issues: narrative patter…

Louise Doutreligne’s Signé Pombo: a French dramatic transposition of the Manuel Vázquez Montalbán’s "Autobiografía del general Franco"

2014

Singing the News of Punishment

2021

Abstract This article explores the pan-European phenomenon of the execution ballad, songs that told the news of true crimes and their punishment by public execution. Looking at examples across nine languages, from the sixteenth through the nineteenth century, this comparison reveals that these ballads share multiple features in textual content and format: a recognisable, formulaic narrative; sensationalist and emotive language; and a conservative perspective that confirms that the condemned is guilty and that ‘justice’ is being served. We also note key regional differences, such as in the use (or not) of contrafactum, the setting of new lyrics to familiar melodies, in the use of the first v…

2005

The «Elegia di madonna Fiammetta» has an evident impact of the story of Leandre and Hero, especially in the moments in which the lady suffers while waiting for her lover, who never comes. Fiammetta makes obvious this parallelism on several occasions, and manages to invent an end for the story loaded of pathos. Joan Roís de Corella realises about this relationship between both two works and makes the inverse path: he uses the tone and some narrative elements of the Elegia for writing his Leander and Hero. It is demonstrated that the so contreversial end of Corella’s story is not original of the Valencian, but it also depends on Boccaccio’s text

Storiografie parallele. Cos'è la non-fiction?

2019
