Sociology and history have maintained a discontinuous relationship and a permanent discussion. Classical sociology is intrinsically historical, but after the first theoretical synthesis the dialogue between both disciplines was extinguished and it has often been necessary to defend the need for the historical view in sociology from the margins of the dominant paradigm. However, as a specialty or subdiscipline, historical sociology has consolidated its own academic space and a strong theoretical, methodological and conceptual body. Comparing deep‐end confinement in England & Wales and Norway

Extreme forms of custody represent the boundary points of state power. The configuration of the most restrictive corners of prison systems, and what goes on within them, is highly instructive in exposing the objectives, limits, and implications of state coercion at its most severe. Based on data collected in England & Wales and Norway, this article has two main aims. The first is to explore the degree to which “deep-end” confinement differs between jurisdictions with different penal philosophies. Patterns of reception in Denmark, Finland, and Sweden : In search of interpretive communities

This paper focuses on the search of interpretative communities across and amongst the Nordics. First the idea of shared ‘Nordic mode of reception’ between the three Nordic countries which participated to the World Hobbit Research project is presented and investigated, after which the focus is shifted towards the examination of the possibility of the ‘country-specific profiles’. Finally it is questioned if any other background variable than nationality could explain the finding which emerge when examining the data at the level of nationalities. peerReviewed

Szkic z dziejów leksykografii dwujęzycznej: Paweł Sobolewski i jego Słownik angielsko-polski… (1840)

This article focuses on Paweł Sobolewski’s manuscript dictionary, Słownik angielsko- polski… (1840), which his biographers allege was lost during shipment from America to Europe. However, part of the manuscript embracing the alphabet range B‒E is held at the archive of the Polish Library in Paris, thus allowing the author to discuss facts and myths concerning the dictionary, and make an attempt at its assessment. Much attention is paid in the paper to Sobolewski’s biography, which may be illustrated and partly verified with the extant correspondence.
Parliamentary sources in the comparative study of conceptual history: methodological aspects and illustrations of a research proposal

Summary: This article proposes that historians and political theorists should exploit parliamentary sources to move from the writing of national histories to the comparative study of the conceptual history of European political cultures. Complementing the German lexicographical approach to conceptual history, the authors argue that parliamentary debates in several European countries provide more reliable sources for the past use of the language of politics. Protective coloration of European vipers throughout the predation sequence

Antipredator adaptations in the form of animal coloration are common and often multifunctional. European vipers (genus Vipera) have a characteristic dorsal zigzag pattern, which has been shown to serve as a warning signal to potential predators. At the same time, it has been suggested to decrease detection risk, and to cause a motion dazzle or flicker-fusion effect during movement. We tested these hypotheses by asking whether (1) the zigzag pattern decreases detection risk and (2) the detection is dependent on the base coloration (grey or brown) or the snake's posture (coiled, basking form or S-shaped, active form).
