The impact of institutional and macroeconomic conditions on aggregate business bankruptcy

Abstract This paper investigates the aggregate business bankruptcy in relation to three macro-level factors: the government effectiveness, entrepreneurship activity and control of corruption for six European countries during the period from 2004 to 2017. We employ fuzzy-set qualitative comparative analysis (fsQCA) and partial least squares regression (PLS). Our findings show that countries with a high level of new firm creation and entrepreneurial activity can lead to a rise in the number of company failures. Furthermore, countries with a low corruption index and high levels of government effectiveness can mitigate insolvency. Our results have several policy implications for the evaluation …

This research aims at analysing the influence of a holistic configuration of factors related to industry and the characteristics of the entrepreneur and the business, on the survival of social and commercial entrepreneurial initiatives in both, new and consolidated companies. The sample ranges from 2,851 to 2,109 firms, according to the period considered, and has been obtained from the reports of the projects submitted to the Assistance Programme to Young Entrepreneurs, promoted by the Valencian Institute of Youth. Migration and imperfect labor markets: theory and cross-country evidence from Denmark, Germany and the UK

We investigate the labor market effects of immigration in Denmark, Germany and the UK, three countries which are characterized by considerable differences in labor market institutions and welfare states. Institutions such as collective bargaining, minimum wages, employment protection and unemployment benefits affect the way in which wages respond to labor supply shocks, and, hence, the labor market effects of immigration. We employ a wage-setting approach which assumes that wages decline with the unemployment rate, albeit imperfectly. The role of passion in the quality-value-satisfaction-intentions chain: linear models and the QCA approach for athletes

The aim of this research is to determine the role of passion on future intentions, perceived value, and athletes’ satisfaction in relation to participatory sport events by combining two methodological approaches: linear models and qualitative comparative analysis (QCA). A sample of participatory sporting event athletes (n = 302) was analysed. The results suggest that there is a direct effect of harmonic passion (HP) on future intentions (FI), value (PV) and satisfaction (AS) and a direct effect of obsessive passion (OP) on satisfaction. Revisiting bank failure in the United States: a fuzzy-set analysis

Past financial crises have illustrated the importance of recognising the combinations of factors that can cause financial distress in the banking industry. Accordingly, this study uses fuzzy-set qualitative comparative analysis (fsQCA) to identify the combinations of factors that lead to bank failure. The data consist of 30 annual financial ratio series for 156 U.S. banks over a 15-year period (2001–2015). Identifying combinations of conditions that can produce bank failure is crucial to help regulators and bank managers.
