A new and controversial scenario in the gathering of evidence at the European level: The proposal for a directive on the European investigation order

2014

In April 2010 a group of EU Member States proposed a Directive on the European Investigation Order, an instrument which, if adopted, will significantly change the way in which evidence is gathered at the EU level. After the failure of the EEW, which focused on the exchange of evidence which had already been gathered, the objective of the new text is to create a single instrument for obtaining all kinds of evidence located in another Member State. The aim of this paper is to examine, within the current framework, the suitability of this new instrument, with particular reference to its impact on the rights of defendants.

La morte medicalmente assistita tra regolamentazioni nazionali europee e prospettive legislative italiane

2021

The essay focuses on the different legislative rules which allow seriously ill patients to legally receive euthanasia or assisted suicide in Europe to examine the Italian legislation currently being approved on the same matter from a comparative legal perspective. The research about such an ethical theme involving several fundamental principles, like human dignity, life and solidarity, analyses the approaches of the Belgian, Dutch, Luxembourg and Spanish legal systems. The study will shed light on the essentiality of some preventive safeguards to support patients autonomy in consenting or refusing an end-of-life treatment, in line with the Italian Constitutional Court suggestions.

On the power and the systematic biases of the detection of chromosomal inversions by paired-end genome sequencing

2013

One of the most used techniques to study structural variation at a genome level is paired-end mapping (PEM). PEM has the advantage of being able to detect balanced events, such as inversions and translocations. However, inversions are still quite difficult to predict reliably, especially from high-throughput sequencing data. We simulated realistic PEM experiments with different combinations of read and library fragment lengths, including sequencing errors and meaningful base-qualities, to quantify and track down the origin of false positives and negatives along sequencing, mapping, and downstream analysis. We show that PEM is very appropriate to detect a wide range of inversions, even with …

On the complexity of the Saccharomyces bayanus taxon: Hybridization and potential hybrid speciation

2014

Although the genus Saccharomyces has been thoroughly studied, some species in the genus has not yet been accurately resolved; an example is S. bayanus, a taxon that includes genetically diverse lineages of pure and hybrid strains. This diversity makes the assignation and classification of strains belonging to this species unclear and controversial. They have been subdivided by some authors into two varieties (bayanus and uvarum), which have been raised to the species level by others. In this work, we evaluate the complexity of 46 different strains included in the S. bayanus taxon by means of PCR-RFLP analysis and by sequencing of 34 gene regions and one mitochondrial gene. Using the sequenc…

Reconstruction of the evolutionary history of Saccharomyces cerevisiae x S. kudriavzevii hybrids based on multilocus sequence analysis.

2012

In recent years, interspecific hybridization and introgression are increasingly recognized as significant events in the evolution of Saccharomyces yeasts. These mechanisms have probably been involved in the origin of novel yeast genotypes and phenotypes, which in due course were to colonize and predominate in the new fermentative environments created by human manipulation. The particular conditions in which hybrids arose are still unknown, as well as the number of possible hybridization events that generated the whole set of natural hybrids described in the literature during recent years. In this study, we could infer at least six different hybridization events that originated a set of 26 S…

Observing animals and humans : dogs target their gaze to the biological information in natural scenes

2020

Background This study examines how dogs observe images of natural scenes containing living creatures (wild animals, dogs and humans) recorded with eye gaze tracking. Because dogs have had limited exposure to wild animals in their lives, we also consider the natural novelty of the wild animal images for the dogs. Methods The eye gaze of dogs was recorded while they viewed natural images containing dogs, humans, and wild animals. Three categories of images were used: naturalistic landscape images containing single humans or animals, full body images containing a single human or an animal, and full body images containing a pair of humans or animals. The gazing behavior of two dog populations,…

Facial Expressions to Evaluate Advertising: A Laboratory versus Living Room Study

2017

In recent years researchers have shown growing interest in the impact of emotions in television commercials and in advertising in general (Park and Thorson, 1990). Emotions also influence the attitude towards the brand and to the ad (Batney and Ray, 1986; Edell and Burke, 1987; Derbaix, 1995), increase the attention of the advertisement (Olney, Hobrook and Bartra, 1991), and brand recall (Stayman and Batra, 1991).

THE MAINTENANCE OF THE FORMER SPOUSE IN A NEW JUDICIAL RECONSTRUCTION: LET’S GO LIVING IN THE PAST

2018

The new interpretation followed by the Italian Court of Cassation amended the consolidated evaluation criterion of the divorce subsidy over passing the fixed parameter of maintaining the standard of living enjoyed during marriage, in favour of the overall evaluation of ALL the parameters provided for by art. 5 of the Divorce Act 1970. Consequently, for the grant, reduction or even revocation of the divorce allowance, it is necessary to assess whether the former beneficiary spouse is, or not, economically self- sufficient, since it is not necessary for the former beneficiary spouse to be aseptically guaranteed the same standard of living as he or she was during marriage. In application of th…

Comparative economic analysis of support policies for solar PV in the most representative EU countries

2015

Abstract The purpose of this paper is to study the positions of some European Union (EU) countries on the development of PV systems. After a review of the main support policies for PV systems in Europe, the specific situations of five representative countries (France, Germany, Greece, Italy and the U.K.) are examined, with the purpose of describing the main differences in their implementation of support policies adopted for PV systems. In particular, comparisons based on economic indexes such as the net present value (NPV) and the internal rate of return (IRR) are carried out for different sized PV systems, showing that in some situations support policies can be inconvenient for the PV syst…

Selected issues of historical research in the field of Polish social pedagogy

2020

The article deals with the issue of historical research on social activities. This research is a part of the field of scientific activity of Polish social pedagogy, whose creator was Helena Radlińska. This researcher has developed a method of historical research for social pedagogues. It is worthwhile to use this methodological approach in modern scientific research from social pedagogy. Their effects will serve to restore the truth about the past of social activity and its representatives, their scientific and practical achievements. On the other hand, the effects of this research will serve as a signpost for those seeking new solutions for the practice of social activity in the present an…
