Il Cabinet d'amateur di Georges Perec
2011
In 1979 one year after the publication of La vie mode d’emploi, George Perec wrote Cabinet d’amateur. Histoire d’un tableau, in which he tells the story of a painting belonging to the genre of the cabinet d’amateur, also known as kunst- und wunderkammer. It is a collection of different paintings, usually belonging to a rich man or a notable, portrayed (once again) in a single picture celebrating the magnificence of this more or less real collection. As for the pictorial genre, so the short novel is the celebration of the images collected by George Perec in his previous masterpiece, La vie mode d’emploi. This is why I assume this work to be referable to the genre of structural homology more …
New Approaches to OCR for Early Printed Books
2020
Books printed before 1800 present major problems for OCR. One of the main obstacles is the lack of diversity of historical fonts in training data. The OCR-D project, consisting of book historians and computer scientists, aims to address this deficiency by focussing on three major issues. Our first target was to create a tool that identifies font groups automatically in images of historical documents. We concentrated on Gothic font groups that were commonly used in German texts printed in the 15th and 16th century: the well-known Fraktur and the lesser known Bastarda, Rotunda, Textura und Schwabacher. The tool was trained with 35,000 images and reaches an accuracy level of 98%. It can not on…
Evaluation of efficacy and efficiency of a pragmatic intervention by a social worker to support informal caregivers of elderly patients (The ICE Stud…
2016
Medical progress and the lifestyle modification have prolonged life expectancy, despite the development of chronic diseases. Support and care for older subjects are often provided by a network of informal caregivers composed of family, friends and neighbors, who are essential in helping older persons to continue living at home. It has been shown that the extent and diversity of informal tasks may jeopardize the physical, mental and social wellbeing of caregivers. The aim of the Informal Carers of Elderly cohort is to define, through a longitudinal study, profiles of caregivers of older patients with a diagnosis of one of the following diseases: cancer (breast, prostate, colorectal), neurode…

Globalization and leadership and management: a comparative analysis of primary schools in England and Finland
2006
This article analyses the impact of processes of globalization on both policy and practice in relation to primary school leadership and management in England and Finland. Data are drawn from case study research carried out from 1994–1996 in six schools in Finland and six schools in England and a follow‐up study on teacher professionalism (2001–2002) that involved 37 of the original participants being re‐interviewed. The article contributes to the ongoing debate concerning the extent to which global trends lead to homogeneity in educational systems or a ‘glocalized’ response. Such a glocalized response is derived not only from different cultural mediations at the national policy level but al…
Utilizing Multimodal Data Through fsQCA to Explain Engagement in Adaptive Learning
2020
Investigating and explaining the patterns of learners’ engagement in adaptive learning conditions is a core issue towards improving the quality of personalized learning services. This article collects learner data from multiple sources during an adaptive learning activity, and employs a fuzzy set qualitative comparative analysis (fsQCA) approach to shed light to learners’ engagement patterns, with respect to their learning performance. Specifically, this article measures and codes learners’ engagement by fusing and compiling clickstreams (e.g., response time), physiological data (e.g., eye-tracking, electroencephalography, electrodermal activity), and survey data (e.g., goal-orientation) to…
The Role of the Prefect in the Italian Legal System

Any approach to the prefectoral institute, as it appears today as result of the recent changes introduced in the Italian legal system over the last years, cannot be reconstructed by starting from government representation, and consequently, from the fundamental character of several competences of the Prefect in Italy in the light of the deep reforms of the Italian public administration in the perspective of the “multi-level constitutionalism” the progressive emergence and developments of organs, structure and procedures that create legal norms and impose such norms on citizens of different national states3.
Balancing Roles of Representation in the European Commission
2008
Representation is one essential dimension of executive governance. This article has a dual ambition: The first is to outline an institutional perspective on representation that may explore and explain the everyday balancing act of representation among government officials. The second ambition is to empirically illuminate dynamics of representation among crucial test-bed inside the European Commission, that of temporary officials. El derecho de los parlamentarios a recabar documentación administrativa. Nuevas perspectivas jurisprudenciales a raíz de su creciente judicialización
2019
For just over five years, for the first time in our democratic history, the right of parliamentarians to collect documentation from public administrations has been judicialized in the contentious-administrative way. A cluster of cases with a single common focus: tense government-parliament relations in the Valencian Community. This conflict has led, in the course of these years, to a high number of resolutions of both the Superior Court of Justice of the Valencian Community and the Supreme Court. A total of more than forty sentences that have had a considerable impact on the delimitation of this right. This article examines these judicial resolutions and offers a global analysis of the inte…
