Cardioprotective effects of phytopigments via multiple signaling pathways.

Abstract Background Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) are among the deadliest non-communicable diseases, and millions of dollars are spent every year to combat CVDs. Unfortunately, the multifactorial etiology of CVDs complicates the development of efficient therapeutics. Interestingly, phytopigments show significant pleiotropic cardioprotective effects both in vitro and in vivo. Understanding a Cartesian graph using the motion sensor

This paper shows the experimental results of a didactical activity conducted using the motion sensor. This MBL-tool (Microcomputers-Based Laboratory) allows to study rectilinear motion of bodies moving in front of it. In a fixed time interval the motion sensor reveals the distance of bodies from it and transmits the measures to a computer that visualizes the data in tabular and Cartesian representations. This research corroborates several works about the use of MBL-tools, according to which the use of the motion sensor allows the students to read, understand and produce kinematics graphs. Complexity of IL-1β induced gene expression pattern in human articular chondrocytes

The mRNA fingerprinting technique, differential display reverse transcription polymerase chain (DDRT-PCR), was used to detect changes in the overall pattern of gene expression in human articular knee chondrocytes-induced by interleukin-1 beta (IL-1 beta), the prototypical inducer of catabolic responses in degenerate joint diseases. One hundred different primer combinations generated approximately 10,000 different PCR fragments for IL-1 beta treated, as well as for untreated human chondrocytes, cultivated in alginate beads. Cloning of a rat-specific long PCP4/PEP19 isoform

We report the identification of a cDNA that encodes a putative protein of 94 amino acids and expected molecular weight of 10.7 kDa, the C-terminal half of which is identical to that of PEP19, a small, brain-specific protein involved in Ca++/calmodulin signaling. The novel rat-specific protein, tentatively named long PEP19 isoform (LPI), is the product of alternative splicing of the rat PCP4 gene encoding PEP19. We found that antibodies raised against the first 13 N-terminal amino acids of LPI, not present in PEP19, recognize a protein enriched in the developing rat brain.

Streptolysin O (SLO) is a bacterial exotoxin that binds to cell membranes containing cholesterol and then oligomerizes to form large pores. Along with rings, arc-shaped oligomers form on membranes. It has been suggested that each arc represents an incompletely assembled oligomer and constitutes a functional pore, faced on the opposite side by a free edge of the lipid membrane. Binding properties of mechanically and enzymatically isolated hepatocytes for IgG and C3.

— The presence of Fc and C3 receptors was studied on mechanically and enzymatically isolated rabbit, mouse and rat hepatocytes as well as on hepatocytes derived from primary cultures. The same cell preparations were used for studying the uptake of an antibody against nuclear antigens. Mechanically isolated hepatocytes were able to bind AIgG and activate complement. However, the same cells were not able to form rosettes with EA or with EAC. Enzymatically isolated hepatocytes did not bind AIgG or activate complement nor did they form rosettes with EA or with EAC. Saponins-mediated potentiation of cisplatin accumulation and cytotoxicity in human colon cancer cells.

The triterpene saponins jenisseensosides A, B, C, D were found to increase the accumulation and cytotoxicity of the anticancer agent cisplatin in human colon tumor cells. These compounds are glycosides of quillaic acid whose fucose residue was acylated by a trans- or cis-p methoxycinnamic acid. In contrarst, other saponins derivatives without this acyl moiety were not found to potentiate the accumulation and cytotoxicity of cisplatin. These results suggested the importance of the acyl moiety for activity.
