Abstract Background Human tumors are still a major threat to human health and plant tumors negatively affect agricultural yields. Both areas of research are developing largely independent of each other. Treatment of both plant and human tumors remains unsatisfactory and novel therapy options are urgently needed. Chemical composition of the essential oil of the local endemics Centaurea davidovii and C. parilica (Asteraceae, sect. Lepteranthus) from Bulgaria

In the present study the chemical compositions of the essential oils from aerial parts of Centaurea davidovii Urum. and C. parilica Stoj. & Stef., both endemic to Bulgaria, were evaluated by GC and GC-MS. The main components of C. davidovii were β-eudesmol (13.9%), spathulenol (13.3%), caryophyllene oxide (10.1%) and ( Z)-phytol (5.4%). The main components of C parilica were hexadecanoic acid (39.2%), ( Z, Z)-9,12-octadecadienoic acid (11.9%), caryophyllene oxide (6.8%) and spathulenol (6.6%). In order to compare the essential oils composition of these taxa and of related species a PCA analysis was carried out.

In a previous study, we have identified and characterized a cDNA encoding a novel putative extracellular matrix protein named tenebrin, in the beetle Tenebrio molitor. GAL4-responsive UAS- tau as a tool for studying the anatomy and development of the Drosophila central nervous system

To improve the quality of cytoplasmic labelling of GAL4-expressing cells in Drosophila enhancer-trap and transgenic strains, a new GAL4-responsive reporter UAS-tau, which features a bovine tau cDNA under control of a yeast upstream activation sequence (UAS), was tested. Tau, a microtubule-associated protein, is distributed actively and evenly into all cellular processes. Monoclonal anti-bovine Tau antibody reveals the axonal structure of the labelled cells with detail similar to that of Golgi impregnation. We demonstrate that the UAS-tau system is especially useful for studying processes of differentiation and reorganisation of identified neurones during postembryonic development.

Three novel triterpenoid saponins, junceosides A (1), B (2), and C (3), together with two known saponins have been isolated from the roots of Arenaria juncea. Cytotoxic Spirostane-Type Saponins from the Roots of Chlorophytum borivilianum

Four new spirostane-type saponins named borivilianosides E-H (1-4) were isolated from an ethanol extract of the roots of Chlorophytum borivilianum together with two known steroid saponins (5 and 6). The structures of 1-4 were elucidated using mainly 2D NMR spectroscopic techniques and mass spectrometry. The cytotoxicity of borivilianosides F (2), G (3), and H (4) and three known compounds was evaluated using two human colon cancer cell lines (HT-29 and HCT 116).
