Spatial graphs and Convolutive Models

2020

In the last two decades, many complex systems have benefited from the use of graph theory, and these approaches have shown robust applicability in the field of finance, computer circuits and in biological systems. Large scale models of brain systems make also a great use of random graph models. Graph theory can be instrumental in modeling the connectivity and spatial distribution of neurons, through a characterization of the relative topological properties. However, all approaches in studying brain function have been so far limited to use experimental constraints obtained at a macroscopic level (e.g. fMRI, EEG, MEG, DTI, DSI). In this contribution, we present a microscopic use (i.e. at the …

Quantifying biochemical reaction rates from static population variability within complex networks

2021

Quantifying biochemical reaction rates within complex cellular processes remains a key challenge of systems biology even as high-throughput single-cell data have become available to characterize snapshots of population variability. That is because complex systems with stochastic and non-linear interactions are difficult to analyze when not all components can be observed simultaneously and systems cannot be followed over time. Instead of using descriptive statistical models, we show that incompletely specified mechanistic models can be used to translate qualitative knowledge of interactions into reaction rate functions from covariability data between pairs of components. This promises to tur…

Mathematical Control of Complex Systems 2013

2014

Mathematical control of complex systems have already become an ideal research area for control engineers, mathematicians, computer scientists, and biologists to understand, manage, analyze, and interpret functional information/dynamical behaviours from real-world complex dynamical systems, such as communication systems, process control, environmental systems, intelligent manufacturing systems, transportation systems, and structural systems. This special issue aims to bring together the latest/innovative knowledge and advances in mathematics for handling complex systems. Topics include, but are not limited to the following: control systems theory (behavioural systems, networked control syste…

Effects of complex movements on the brain as a result of increased decision-making

2019

Non-linearity is considered to be an essential property of complex systems. The associated high sensitivity of the result on the constraints leads to fundamental problems of a system description based on variables selected in the reductionist tradition. The attempt to compensate the problems by averaging data leads to the neglect of the individual and the moment. However, both is of enormous importance for effective therapy, training, and learning. The theory of differential learning suggests an alternative approach to dealing with these problems. With constantly changing complex whole-body movements, extensive decisions are demanded from the learner, which lead to brain states through an o…

Structural and Dynamical Complexities of Risk and Catastrophe Systems: an Approach by System Dynamics Modelling

2009

Risk and catastrophe are complex systems. Within the scope of this paper, we focus our attention on structural and dynamic complexities of catastrophes and on the possibility of modelling and simulating its double complexity with a formal and methodological framework: the General Systems Theory and System Dynamics modelling. Then we briefly propose a model of urban catastrophe related to a flood. After we propose some ways of research allowing exceeding the limits related to the modelling.

Multi-criteria decision methods to support the maintenance management of complex systems

2019

Analysis of motor control and behavior in multi agent systems by means of artificial neural networks

2004

Abstract This article gives a short introduction to Self-Organizing Maps, a particular form of Artificial Neural Networks and shows by some examples, how these approaches can be used in order to analyze and visualize time series data originating from complex systems. The methods shown in this article have originally been developed for the analysis of RoboCup robot soccer games, a special kind of so-called Multi Agent Systems. Although this application has no direct connection to biomechanics, the examples shown here may give an impression of the abilities of Neural Networks in the field of Time Series Analysis in general. Because of the abstractness of the methods, it appears to be very lik…

A New Multiblock PLS Based Method to Estimate Causal Models: Application to the Post-Consumption Behavior in Tourism

2009

This study presents a new algorithm for estimating causal models based on multiblock PLS method. This new algorithm is tested in a particular post-consumption behavior with the aim of validating a complex system of relations between antecedents of value, perceived value, satisfaction and loyalty. The results are compared with the classical LVPLS method: both methods support the proposed structural relations, but the explained variance is slightly higher with the new algorithm.

Economic Allocation in Life Cycle Assessment The State of the Art and Discussion of Examples

2012

Summary This article examines methods for analyzing allocation in life cycle assessment (LCA); it focuses on comparisons of economic allocation with other feasible alternatives. The International Organization for Standardization's (ISO) guideline 14044 indicates that economic allocation should only be used as a last resort, when other methods are not suitable. However, the LCA literature reports several examples of the use of economic allocation. This is due partly to its simplicity and partly to its ability to illustrate the properties of complex systems. Sometimes a price summarizes complex attributes of product or service quality that cannot be easily measured by physical criteria. On th…

The OptQuest Callable Library

2005

In this chapter we discuss the development and application of a library of functions that is the optimization engine for the OptQuest system. OptQuest is commercial software designed for optimizing complex systems, such as those formulated as simulation models. OptQuest has been integrated with several simulation packages with the goal of adding optimization capabilities. The optimization technology within OptQuest is based on the metaheuristic framework known as scatter search. In addition to describing the functionality of the OptQuest Callable Library (OCL) with an illustrative example, we apply it to a set of unconstrained nonlinear optimization problems.
