Influence of carbon and nutrient additions on a decomposer food chain and the growth of pine seedlings in microcosms

Abstract Because of N deposition plant production is becoming increasingly limited by other nutrients in boreal forests. At the same time more C is suggested to become available for below-ground food webs because of enhanced CO2 fixation. We studied the effects of carbon and nutrient addition on a fungus–nematode food chain and on the growth of mycorrhizal or nonmycorrhizal pine seedlings (Pinus sylvestris L.) in microcosms with N-rich mineral soil and a humus layer. Interannual Variability of Biomass (SMOS Vegetation Optical Depth) Over the Contiguous United States

Interannual variability in biomass represented by SMOS vegetation optical depth (VOD) and precipitation was assessed over the Contiguous United States. The greatest interannual variability in both VOD and precipitation occurred in shrubs and herbaceous (grasslands), with forests the least variable. At a continental scale, VOD was strongly correlated with annual precipitation. Results showed a significant correlation coefficient (∼ 0.93) between interannual variability of precipitation and biomass, indicating that the interannual variability of precipitation could be a good predictor of the interannual variability of biomass.

Such ontogenetic development introduces life-history stages and flows of biomass between the stages through growth and reproduction. Mn(II) complexes of scorpiand-type azamacrocycles constituted by a tretrazapyridinophane core appended with an ethylamino tail including 2- or 4-quinoline functionalities show very appealing in vitro SOD activity. The observed behaviour is related to structural and electrochemical parameters.

The carbonic anhydrase (CA; EC 4.2.1.1) superfamily is a class of ubiquitous metallo-enzymes that catalyse the reversible hydration of carbon dioxide. The ?-CA family, present in all metazoan clades, is a key enzyme involved in a wide range of physiological functions including pH regulation, respiration, photosynthesis, and biocalcification. This paper reviews the evolution of the ?-CA family, with an emphasis on metazoan ?-CA members involved in biocalcification. An ab initio potential energy surface for the C2H2-N2 system

International audience; An ab initio potential energy surface determined at the CCSD(T) level of theory is presented for the van der Waals complex C2H2-N2. Additional calculations performed with the HF- and DFT-SAPT methods compare well with the CCSD(T) results and allow a better understanding of the main features of this interaction potential surface. An expansion of this surface over spherical harmonics has also been performed. The global energy minimum of the complex is obtained for the linear conformation. Eukaryotic cell cycle progression through G(1)-S is driven by hormonal and growth-related signals that are transmitted by the target of rapamycin complex 1 (TORC1) pathway. In yeast, inactivation of TORC1 restricts G(1)-S transition due to the rapid clearance of G(1) cyclins (Cln) and the stabilization of the B-type cyclin (Clb) cyclin-dependent kinase (CDK) inhibitor Sic1. The target of rapamycin complex 1 (TORC1) pathway couples nutrient, energy and hormonal signals with eukaryotic cell growth and division. In yeast, TORC1 coordinates growth with G1–S cell cycle progression, also coined as START, by favouring the expression of G1 cyclins that activate cyclin-dependent protein kinases (CDKs) and by destabilizing the CDK inhibitor Sic1. The cribrimorph Distansescharella seguenzai Cipolla,,1921, described from the Pliocene of Sicily has been rediscovered in fossil deposits (Messinian of Western Algeria, and Lower Pliocene of Calabria, Southern Italy) and in Recent Mediterranean material (Straits of Gibraltar, Alboran Sea, Gulf of Tripoli). Its morphology is demonstrated by SEM study of living specimens. COVARIANCE AND CORRELATION ESTIMATORS IN BIPARTITE SYSTEMS

We present a weighted estimator of the covariance and correlation in bipartite complex systems with a double layer of heterogeneity. The advantage provided by the weighted estimators lies in the fact that the unweighted sample covariance and correlation can be shown to possess a bias. Indeed, such a bias affects real bipartite systems, and, for example, we report its effects on two empirical systems, one social and the other biological. On the contrary, our newly proposed weighted estimators remove the bias and are better suited to describe such systems.
