Changing the size of a cavity via an electron-transfer: synthesis and reduction of 1,5,22,26-tetraoxa-[5,5]-(2,8)-dibenzo[a,e]cylooctatetraenophane
1989
Abstract The synthesis and electron transfer reactions of the title compound, the first macrocycle incorporating two cyclooctatetraene units, are described.

External parameters contribution in domestic load forecasting using neural network
2015
Domestic demand prediction is very important for home energy management system and also for peak reduction in the power system network. In this work, for precise prediction of power demand, external parameters, such as temperature and solar radiation, are considered and included in the prediction model for improving prediction performance. Power prediction models for coming hours' power demand estimation are built using neural network based on hourly power consumptions data with / without ambient temperature data and global solar irradiation (GSI) data respectively. In this work, a typical Southern Norwegian household demand has been considered. As a result, both ambient temperature and GSI…
On the impact of within-die process variation in GALS-Based NoC Performance
2012
[EN] Current integration scales allow designing chip multiprocessors (CMP), where cores are interconnected by means of a network-on-chip (NoC). Unfortunately, the small feature size of current integration scales causes some unpredictability in manufactured devices because of process variation. In NoCs, variability may affect links and routers causing them not to match the parameters established at design time. In this paper, we first analyze the way that manufacturing deviations affect the components of a NoC by applying a new comprehensive and detailed within-die variability model to 200 instances of an 8¿8 mesh NoC synthesized using 45 nm technology. Later, we show that GALS-based NoCs pr…
A DSP-Based Resolver-To-Digital Converter for High-Performance Electrical Drive Applications
2016
This paper presents a low cost, simple, and highly accurate resolver-to-digital converter (RDC) for electrical drive applications based on an integrated software approach, thus allowing a significant reduction of hardware components count with significant improvements in terms of reliability, reduction of fault rate, and susceptibility to electromagnetic interference (EMI). Particular attention has been addressed to cost which is 25% off over conventional RDC. Simulations and experimental tests confirm the high quality of the proposed system.
Sequential design of multioverlapping controllers for structural vibration control of tall buildings under seismic excitation
2012
In this article, a computationally effective strategy to obtain multioverlapping controllers via the inclusion principle is applied to design a state-feedback multioverlapping linear-quadratic regulator controller for a 20-story building. The proposed semidecentralized controller only requires state information of neighboring stories to compute the corresponding control actions. This particular information exchange configuration allows introducing a dramatic reduction in the transmission range required for a wireless implementation of the communications system. More specifically, just a one-story transmission range is required by the proposed multioverlapping controller, while a full-buildi…
Robotic path planning for non-destructive testing of complex shaped surfaces
2015
The requirement to increase inspection speeds for non-destructive testing (NDT) of composite aerospace parts is common to many manufacturers. The prevalence of complex curved surfaces in the industry provides significant motivation for the use of 6 axis robots for deployment of NDT probes in these inspections. A new system for robot deployed ultrasonic inspection of composite aerospace components is presented. The key novelty of the approach is through the accommodation of flexible robotic trajectory planning, coordinated with the NDT data acquisition. Using a flexible approach in MATLAB, the authors have developed a high level custom toolbox that utilizes external control of an industrial …
Applying complexity science to air traffic management
2015
Versión aceptada obtenida del archivo digital en línea WestminsterResearch de la Universidad de Westminster. Complexity science is the multidisciplinary study of complex systems. Its marked network orientation lends itself well to transport contexts. Key features of complexity science are introduced and defined, with a specific focus on the application to air traffic management. An overview of complex network theory is presented, with examples of its corresponding metrics and multiple scales. Complexity science is starting to make important contributions to performance assessment and system design: selected, applied air traffic management case studies are explored. The important contexts of…
An experimental study on relationship between LED lamp characteristics and non image-forming
2017
The general aim of the experimental study, presented in this paper, was that to investigate the relationship between the characteristics of five different types of LED (Light Emitting Diode) lamps, which are nowadays those allowing the highest energy consumption reduction, and the humans non image-forming (NIF) reactions.
Unraveling the Complexity of Tourist Experience with NFC Technology and Mobile Wallets
2014
By considering the tourist experience as a complex dynamic system, in this paper we depict the traveler as a kybernetes (κυβeρνήτης is the ancient Greek word for ‘sea captain’, ‘steersman’, or ‘governor’) in search of powerful tools to help him or her to obtain directions in the mare magnum of complexity, overcoming the fear of action and taking decisions. We focus our attention on the key role of Near Field Communication technology and mobile wallet as ‘attenuators of complexity’ in the travel and tourism industry.
