Time reduction for completion of a civil engineering construction using fuzzy clustering techniques
2017
In the civil engineering field, there are usually unexpected troubles that can cause delays during execution. This situation involves numerous variables (resource number, execution time, costs, working area availability, etc.), mutually dependent, that complicate the definition of the problem analytical model and the related resolution. Consequently, the decision-maker may avoid rational methods to define the activities that could be conveniently modified, relying only on his personal experience or experts’ advices. In order to improve this kind of decision from an objective point of view, the authors analysed the operation correction using a data mining technique, called Fuzzy Clustering. …
A polynomial algorithm solving a special class of hybrid optimal control problems
2006
Hybrid optimal control problems are, in general, difficult to solve. A current research goal is to isolate those problems that lead to tractable solutions [5]. In this paper, we identify a special class of hybrid optimal control problems which are easy to solve. We do this by using a paradigm borrowed from the Operations Research field. As main result, we present a solution algorithm that converges to the exact solution in polynomial time. Our approach consists in approximating the hybrid optimal control problem via an integer-linear programming reformulation. The integer-linear programming problem is a Set-covering one with a totally unimodular constraint matrix and therefore solving the S…
Heuristic-Based Shiftable Loads Optimal Management in Smart Micro-Grids
2015
In this paper, an optimal power dispatch problem on a 24-h basis for distribution systems with distributed energy resources (DER) also including directly controlled shiftable loads is presented. In the literature, the optimal energy management problems in smart grids (SGs) where such types of loads exist are formulated using integer or mixed integer variables. In this paper, a new formulation of shiftable loads is employed. Such formulation allows reduction in the number of optimization variables and the adoption of real valued optimization methods such as the one proposed in this paper. The method applied is a novel nature-inspired multiobjective optimization algorithm based on an original…
Cost benefits of flexible hybrid cloud storage : Mitigating volume variation with shorter acquisition cycle
2016
The hybrid cloud storage is investigated as a case of concurrent sourcing. The paper introduces an analytical model for hybrid cloud storage costs. We study the role of acquisition cycle and volume variation in hybrid cloud costs.Shortening the reassessment interval reduces the volume non-stationarity.Shortening the reassessment interval reduces the total hybrid costs. Hybrid cloud storage combines cost-effective but inflexible private storage along with flexible but premium-priced public cloud storage. As a form of concurrent sourcing, it offers flexibility and cost benefits to organizations by allowing them to operate at a cost-optimal scale and scope under demand volume uncertainty. Howeve…
Autonomy and ICT in Environmental Education
2012
[EN] This paper aims at tackling the need for appropriate knowledge when addressing Environmental Education (EE) from an autonomous and critical viewpoint. It also aims at showing the need for the appropriation of ICT with a view to foster the perception of the environmental complexity, as well as the construction of a new kind of environmental knowledge and awareness. These two factors should be capable of modifying the way human beings behave and relate to their environment. Before looking at effective ways to achieve this goal, a suitable praxis should be developed in such a way that a new environmental awareness emerges. This new praxis should in turn help foster the autonomy of both ed…
Frequency mapping in dynamic light emission with wavelet transform
2013
International audience; Dynamic photon emission microscopy is an e cient tool to analyse today's integrated circuit. Nevertheless, the reduction of transistor's dimensions leads to more complex acquisitions where many spots can be seen. A frequency characterization of the whole acquired area can help to have a better understanding of it. With that purpose in mind, a new methodology to draw frequency mapping of dynamic light emission acquisition is reported. It is fully automated and based on wavelet transform and autocorrelation function. Regarding the possible use in an industrial context, the suggested method can help to localize abnormal emission activity and it gives some perspectives o…
An assessment of the state of grain mixture with the use of the method of statistical reduction
1995
Abstract A new way of assessment of the state of a granular mixture is presented in this paper. It is based on the method of statistical reduction and it enables a more precise assessment to be made of the state of a grain mixture as compared with other methods, especially when the mixture represents a large population. The new method is illustrated by a computational example.
odeling of Human Arm Energy Expenditure for Predicting Energy Optimal Trajectories
2011
Human arm motion can inspire the trajectory planning of anthropomorphic robotic arms to achieve energy-efficient movements. An approach for predicting metabolic cost in the planar human arm motion by means of the biomechanical simulation is proposed in this work. Two biomechanical models, including an analytical model and a musculoskeletal model, are developed to implement the proposed approach. The analytical model is developed by modifying a human muscle expenditure model, in which the muscles are grouped as torque providers for computation efficiency. In the musculoskeletal model, the predication of metabolic cost is conducted on the basis of individual muscles. With the proposed approac…
Measurement-based load modelling for power supply system design
2008
Load modelling is essential to simulate system features as closely as possible to the effective behaviour. In spite of model complexity, the need for accuracy often leads to a component-based approach, i.e. the analysis of load internal subsystems. It is a common belief that measurement-based load models lead to low accuracy. This paper presents a new, high-accuracy measurement-based load modelling approach to define a power consumption profile load model for power systems design. The load modeling technique is described by an application. Simulation and experimental results are compared. The efficiency and portability of the proposed modelling approach is discussed. ©2008 IEEE.
A comprehensive tool for efficient design and operation of polygeneration-based energy μgrids serving a cluster of buildings. Part I: Description of …
2013
Polygeneration systems with thermal energy storage represent promising solutions to achieve energy saving and emissions reduction in the civil sector. The definition of customer-oriented design and operation strategies represents a most challenging task, in order to maximize the profitability and make the investment attractive. A large potential is often recognized for the installation of centralized plants serving a cluster of buildings located over a small area; in such cases the design problem becomes extremely complex and the analyst needs reliable instruments to identify the optimal solution. This paper in two parts presents a scientific tool for the optimization of design and operatio…
