Enuresis Subtypes Based on Nocturnal Hypercalciuria: A Multicenter Study
2003
Purpose: Desmopressin may not be effective for nocturnal enuresis associated with polyuria and hypercalciuria. Nighttime hypercalciuria in an enuretic population from 5 centers and its correlation with nighttime polyuria were verified. Materials and Methods: A total of 450 enuretic patients (278 males, 172 females, mean age 9.7 years) were evaluated with 72-hour micturition charts, urinalysis, serum creatinine and osmolarity, diurnal and nocturnal electrolytes with fractional Na+ and K+ urinary excretion, and nocturnal (4 a.m.) plasma vasopressin. Creatinine electrolytes and osmolarity were measured in daytime (8 a.m. to 8 p.m.) and nighttime (8 p.m. to 8 a.m.) urine volumes. Patients were …
Series of fibrinous inflammation after implantation of capsular tension rings
2014
Purpose To analyze the cause of fibrinous inflammation in eyes with capsular tension rings (CTRs) after cataract surgery. Setting Department of Ophthalmology, University Medical Center, Johannes Gutenberg-University Mainz, Mainz, Germany. Design Retrospective case series. Methods High-performance liquid chromatography was implemented to eliminate impurities. One CTR was explanted for microbiologic examination. The pH values of the CTR and the storage solution were analyzed, Seldi and Maldi tests were performed, as well as toxicity tests with immortal cell lines. Material batches were analyzed. The organic carbon content of CTRs, detergents, and storage solutions was checked. The presence of…
Preoperative risk factors for postoperative delirium (POD) after urological surgery in the elderly
2011
The aim of this observational study was to investigate the occurrence of postoperative delirium (POD) in elderly patients undergoing urological surgery and to identify those factors associated with delirium. Ninety consecutive patients (81 males and 9 females; average age of 74.3 ± 0.40 years), undergoing urological surgery in University-Hospital Urological Clinic were selected. Personal, medical, cognitive and functional data, biochemical parameters, preoperative medications, conduct of surgery and anesthesia and details of hemodynamic control were collected as predictors of delirium. After surgery, the subjects were divided on the basis of delirium onset within a week observation period. …
Risk factors for postoperative delirium after colorectal surgery for carcinoma
2011
Background and aim: Data regarding the incidence and risk factors for postoperative delirium (PD) after gastrointestinal surgery are heterogeneous because they include both benign and malignant disease. The aim of this study was to investigate the incidence and risk factors for PD in 100 consecutive patients over 65 years who underwent colorectal surgery for carcinoma. Methods: Pre-operative cognitive function was assessed using the Mini Mental State Examination. The onset of PD was diagnosed by the Confusion Assessment Methods administered to the patients every 12 h starting from the first postoperative day to discharge. The severity of PD was also evaluated with the Delirium Rating Scale.…
Antihypertensive activity of angiotensin II AT1 receptor antagonists: a systematic review of studies with 24 h ambulatory blood pressure monitoring.
2007
To perform a systematic review of the antihypertensive activity of the angiotensin II AT1 receptor antagonists (ARB).Studies in which blood pressure (BP) was measured using ambulatory BP monitoring for at least 24 h were collected from MEDLINE. Data for each treatment group, ARB, placebo or the drug used for its comparison were obtained from the selected studies. Only studies with a minimum of quality criteria were selected. The final study group contained 36 publications, with a total of 47 patient cohorts receiving ARB in monotherapy, 10 with placebo, 10 with amlodipine, and five with enalapril. The reduction in clinical and ambulatory BP during 24 h, day, night and the last 4-h period fo…
Report on Intrauterine Drug Exposure During Second Trimester of Pregnancy in a Heroin-Associated Death
1999
A 17-year-old girl was found dead in a public toilet with fresh needle puncture marks. She was 18-20 weeks pregnant with a male fetus. Drug screening of her blood and urine indicated recent heroin use. Chronic drug use was confirmed by hair analysis. Amniotic fluid as well as fetal and maternal tissues and body fluids were analyzed by GC/MS and HPLC. All the fetal specimens were investigated, and the following levels of drugs were found: 6-monoacetyl-morphine (blood: 152 ng/g; amniotic fluid: 128 ng/g; brain: 140 ng/g; lung: 110 ng/g; liver: 2 ng/g; kidney: 40 ng/g), morphine (blood: 1360 ng/g; amniotic fluid: 604 ng/g; brain: 710 ng/g; lung: 1030 ng/g; liver: 2060 ng/g; kidney: 1100 ng/g),…
A simple technique of oblique anastomosis can prevent stricture formation in primary repair of esophageal atresia
2012
Abstract Background Anastomotic stricture is an important problem after esophageal atresia (EA) repair. This study evaluates a technique of oblique esophageal anastomosis without use of a flap in order to prevent stricture formation. Methods Medical records of 16 patients (14 with EA type III and 2 with EA type IV Ladd-Gross classification) who underwent primary repair of EA at birth without anastomotic tension were reviewed, evaluating long-term follow-up results. All patients were studied with esophageal contrast study, pH-multichannel intraluminal impedance, and endoscopy. The incidence of complications and their management were analysed. Results Contrast esophagogram and esophagoscopy a…
Contrast-induced Nephropathy after Percutaneous Coronary Intervention in Simple Lesions: Risk Factors and Incidence are Affected by the Definition Ut…
2011
Aim To compare the incidence, and risk factors, in-hospital and at the 18-month prognosis of contrast-induced nephropathy (CIN) according to the definition utilized: as an increase in serum creatinine (Scr) ≥0.5 mg/dL (CIN 1) or as an increase in Scr ≥25% above baseline values (CIN 2). Methods and Results We prospectively evaluated CIN according to two different definitions in 150 patients who underwent percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) in simple lesions employing a low-medium dose of contrast media. Incidence of CIN was higher using the CIN 2 definition than CIN 1 (9.3% vs. 4%; p=0.0133). Patients with CIN 1 had a higher incidence of chronic kidney disease (CKD) (66.7% vs. 13.9%; p=…
ECG-GATED MULTIDETECTOR COMPUTED TOMOGRAPHY FOR THE ASSESSMENT OF THE POSTOPERATIVE ASCENDING AORTA
2009
This study was undertaken to define the role of electrocardiographically (ECG)-gated multidetector computed tomography (MDCT) in the assessment of the postoperative ascending aorta. From November 2006 to June 2007, 21 patients, [11 men, ten women; age +/- standard deviation (SD): 62.7 +/- 10.8 years] with a history of ascending aorta replacement underwent ECG-gated MDCT and were prospectively included in our study. Ascending aorta replacement had been performed with different surgical techniques: Bentall-De Bono (four patients, 19%), Tirone-David (five patients, 23%), and modified Tirone-David with creation of aortic neosinuses (12 patients, 57%). Two patients were excluded from MDCT evalua…
Computed Tomography-Aortography Versus Color-Duplex Ultrasound for Surveillance of Endovascular Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm Repair: A Prospective Multi…
2020
Background Color-duplex ultrasonography (DUS) could be an alternative to computed tomography-aortography (CTA) in the lifelong surveillance of patients after endovascular aneurysm repair (EVAR), but there is currently no level 1 evidence. The aim of this study was to assess the diagnostic accuracy of DUS as an alternative to CTA for the follow-up of post-EVAR patients. Methods Between December 16, 2010, and June 12, 2015, we conducted a prospective, blinded, diagnostic-accuracy study, in 15 French university hospitals where EVAR was commonly performed. Participants were followed up using both DUS and CTA in a mutually blinded setup until the end of the study or until any major aneurysm-rel…
