Muscular synergies during motor corrections: investigation of the latencies of muscle activities.
2010
To reduce the complexity of muscular control, a small number of muscular activations are combined to produce an infinity of movements. This concept of muscle synergies has been widely investigated, mainly by means of principal component analyses (PCA) in the case of unperturbed movements. However, reaching movements can be altered at any time if the target location is changed during their execution. In this case, PCA does not precisely measure the latencies of muscles activities. We develop here a simple method to investigate how a random target jump toward a single location induced motor corrections in the whole musculature by precisely determining the latencies of muscle activities during…
Increased amygdala and parahippocampal gyrus activation in schizophrenic patients with auditory hallucinations: An fMRI study using independent compo…
2010
Objective: Hallucinations in patients with schizophrenia have strong emotional connotations. Functional neuroimaging techniques have been widely used to study brain activity in patients with schizophrenia with hallucinations or emotional impairments. However, few of these Studies have investigated the association between hallucinations and emotional dysfunctions using an emotional auditory paradigm. Independent component analysis (ICA) is an analysis method that is especially useful for decomposing activation during complex cognitive tasks in which multiple operations occur simultaneously. Our aim in this Study is to analyze brain activation after the presentation of emotional auditory stim…
Population-based validation of a German version of the Brief Resilience Scale.
2017
Smith and colleagues developed the Brief Resilience Scale (BRS) to assess the individual ability to recover from stress despite significant adversity. This study aimed to validate the German version of the BRS. We used data from a population-based (sample 1: n = 1.481) and a representative (sample 2: n = 1.128) sample of participants from the German general population (age ≥ 18) to assess reliability and validity. Confirmatory factor analyses (CFA) were conducted to compare one- and two-factorial models from previous studies with a method-factor model which especially accounts for the wording of the items. Reliability was analyzed. Convergent validity was measured by correlating BRS scores …
Dimension reduction: additional benefit of an optimal filter for independent component analysis to extract event-related potentials.
2011
The present study addresses benefits of a linear optimal filter (OF) for independent component analysis (ICA) in extracting brain event-related potentials (ERPs). A filter such as the digital filter is usually considered as a denoising tool. Actually, in filtering ERP recordings by an OF, the ERP' topography should not be changed by the filter, and the output should also be able to be modeled by the linear transformation. Moreover, an OF designed for a specific ERP source or component may remove noise, as well as reduce the overlap of sources and even reject some non-targeted sources in the ERP recordings. The OF can thus accomplish both the denoising and dimension reduction (reducing the n…
Model order effects on ICA of resting-state complex-valued fMRI data : application to schizophrenia
2018
Abstract Background Component splitting at higher model orders is a widely accepted finding for independent component analysis (ICA) of functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) data. However, our recent study found that intact components occurred with subcomponents at higher model orders. New method This study investigated model order effects on ICA of resting-state complex-valued fMRI data from 82 subjects, which included 40 healthy controls (HCs) and 42 schizophrenia patients. In addition, we explored underlying causes for distinct component splitting between complex-valued data and magnitude-only data by examining model order effects on ICA of phase fMRI data. A best run selection me…
Benefits of nonlinear analysis indices of walking stride interval in the evaluation of neurodegenerative diseases.
2021
Indices characterising the long-range temporal structure of walking stride interval (SI) variability such as Hurst exponent (H) and fractal dimension (D) may be used in addition to indices measuring the amount of variability like the coefficient of variation (CV). We assess the added value of the former indices in a clinical neurological context. Our aim is to demonstrate that they provide a clinical significance in aging and in frequent neurodegenerative diseases such as Parkinson's disease, Huntington, and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. Indices assessing the temporal structure of variability are mainly dependent on SI time series length and algorithms used, making quantitative comparisons…
The role of genetics and environment in lifting force and isometric trunk extensor endurance.
2004
Background and Purpose. Our understanding of what different back performance tests are measuring is limited. The purpose of this study was to investigate the relative contributions of genetics and unique and common environmental factors for 3 tests of back muscle performance in a classic twin analysis. Subjects. The subjects were a population-based sample of 122 monozygotic and 131 dizygotic male twin pairs aged 35 to 69 years (X̄=49.9, SD=7.7). Methods. Variance component analysis was applied to estimate genetic and environmental influences on isokinetic and psychophysical lifting and isometric trunk extensor endurance test performance. The Cholesky decomposition genetic factor model was u…
Benign and Atypical Meningioma Metabolic Signatures by High-Resolution Magic-Angle Spinning Molecular Profiling
2008
Meningiomas are neoplasms that arise from the leptomeningeal covering of the brain and spinal cord, accounting for 15%-20% of CNS tumors. The WHO classifies meningiomas into three histological grades: benign, atypical, and anaplasic in accordance with the clinical prognosis. Atypical and anaplasic meningiomas tend to recur. Sometimes, meningiomas with histological diagnosis of benign meningioma show clinical characteristics of atypical meningioma. In this context, high-resolution magic-angle spinning (HR-MAS) spectroscopy of intact tissue from brain tumor biopsies has shown great potential as a support diagnostic tool. In this work, we show differences between benign and atypical meningioma…
Barriers to physical activity in coronary artery disease patients: Development and validation of a new scale
2017
Abstract Objective To develop and validate a self-report questionnaire to measure barriers to regular physical activity (PA) in patients with stable coronary artery disease (CAD). Methods Phase 1: 17 patients completed a semi-structured interview. After grouping and reformulating the reported barriers, their pertinence was reevaluated by the patients. Then, a decision algorithm was used to select items. A principal component analysis was performed to determine content validity. Phase 2: 49 patients completed the questionnaire resulting from phase 1 twice, 7 days apart, and questionnaires to evaluate depression, anxiety, and the level of physical activity. Construct validity was evaluated by…
Kinematics reduction applied to the comparison of highly-pronated, normal and highly-supinated feet during walking
2019
Abstract Background Kinematic analysis could help to study how variations in the static foot posture affect lower limb biomechanical function. The analysis of foot kinematics is complex because it involves managing the time-dependent joint angles in different joints and in all three planes of motion. But it could be simplified if joint angles are coordinated. Methods The kinematics of the ankle, midtarsal and metatarsophalangeal joints were registered in 20 highly-pronated, 30 normal and 20 highly-supinated subjects (assessed by the Foot Posture Index – FPI) as they walked barefoot. Coordination for each sample was analysed through principal component analysis applied to the dorsiflexion, a…
