The near surface diffusion and reaction processes in iron-silicon steel (3.1 wt.%Si) during 10 min decarburization in water vapour/hydrogen have been studied. The decarburization temperature has been varied between 506 and 714°C for the fixed partial pressure ratio pH2O/pH2=0.017. An outer layer of SiO2 forms on the surface with its thickness increasing with temperature. From 600°C upwards, the decarburization process is hindered and a cementite layer is formed below the SiO2 layer. The formation of fayalite at the surface has been studied at a fixed decarburization temperature with pH2O/pH2 ranging from 0.017 to 0.49. Bimetallic joints Al/Pb, Al/Sn, Pb/Sn, Pb/Pb, etc. with clean interfaces, obtained by a special cold welding method, are used as a model of phase boundaries for investigation of accommodation processes and strength properties of interfaces. To reduce the volume diffusion-induced relaxation processes, investigations were carried out at relatively low temperatures 0.1-0.5 T m . The role of surface diffusion and the effect of phase boundary energy on the healing of micropore ensembles on interfaces was investigated. Role of Diffusion in Superplasticity and Brittleness of Fine-Grained Binary Eutectics

Mechanical properties of interphase boundaries (IB), stability of defects and microstructure in heavily deformed binary eutectics (Al-Sn, Zn-Sn, Pb-Sn, Cd-Sn, Bi-Sn) have been investigated at room temperature. Experiments were carried out on atomically clean surfaces of alloys and on bimetallic joints with clean interface. It has been shown that after severe deformation the phases are strengthened and relaxation processes occur mainly on the boundaries in all eutectics. In this chapter, measurements of the nail plate pH are reported. Measurements were conducted in vivo in 37 volunteers with healthy finger- and toenails, using a skin pH meter. The pH of unwashed and washed fin- gernails and the big toenails was measured, and the influence of washing, anatomical site (fin- gers/toes), side (left/right), finger digit (digits 1–5), and gender were determined. The pH of the nail plate surface was around 5. There was no significant difference between the sides, i.e., the right or left hand/foot, among the ten fin- gernails and between the two great toenails. The inhibition of water and glycerol permeation via human aquaglyceroporin-3 (AQP3) by gold(iii) complexes has been studied by stopped-flow spectroscopy and, for the first time, its mechanism has been described using molecular dynamics (MD), combined with density functional theory (DFT) and electrochemical studies. The obtained MD results showed that the most effective gold-based inhibitor, anchored to Cys40 in AQP3, is able to induce shrinkage of pores preventing glycerol and water permeation.
