High performance PA6/CNTs nanohybrid fibers prepared in the melt
2012
Commercial and home-made carbon nanotubes (CNTs) were plasma treated under oxygen atmosphere and then added to polyamide 6 (PA6) in order to prepare fibres by melt spinning. For comparison, pristine nanofillers were used too. The effect of functionalization and of filler characteristics on the morphological, rheological, mechanical and electrical properties of the fibres was studied by TEM and SEM, rheological measurements, tensile and electrical conductivity tests. The results demonstrated that the functionalization led to a better mechanical performance and the morphological analysis confirmed that the adhesion, the dispersion and the alignment of the nanotubes within the polymer matrix w…

Synthesis and crystal structure of Na1+xV4P4O17(OH) (x ≈ 1.44)
1990
Abstract Hydrothermal synthesis starting from Na0.46VOPO4 · 1.58H2O leads to a new mixed-valence sodium vanadium phosphate: Na2.44V4P4O17(OH) (orthorhombic, space group Pnma; Z = 4; a = 13.723(5) A, b = 6.314(2) A, c = 16.139(4) A; R = 0.032 for 2659 reflections). In this phase, the interconnection of three complex types of infinite chains, built from VO6 octahedra and PO4 tetrahedra, sometimes edgeshared, defines tunnels partly occupied by a portion of the sodium atoms.
Electrochemical synthesis of sulfamides.
2021
Herein we demonstrate the first electrochemical synthesis protocol of symmetrical sulfamides directly from anilines and SO2 mediated by iodide. Sulfamides are an emerging functional group in drug design. Highlights are the direct use of SO2 from a stock solution and no necessity of any supporting electrolyte. Overall, the reaction has been demonstrated for 15 examples with yields up to 93%.
Effect of extrusion and photoxidation on polyethylene/clay nanocomposites
2009
Polyethylene (a 1:1 blend of m-LLDPE and z-LLDPE) double layer silicate clay nanocomposites were prepared by melt extrusion using a twin screw extruder. Maleic anhydride grafted polyethylene (PEgMA) was used as a compatibiliser to enhance the dispersion of two organically modified monmorilonite clays (OMMT): Closite 15A (CL15) and nanofill SE 3000 (NF), and natural montmorillonite (NaMMT). The clay dispersion and morphology obtained in the extruded nanocomposite samples were fully characterised both after processing and during photo-oxidation by a number of complementary analytical techniques. The effects of the compatibiliser, the organoclay modifier (quartenary alkyl ammonium surfactant) …
Effect of Processing Conditions on the Degradation and on the Recycling of Polycarbonate
2003
Polycarbonate, like other polycondensation polymers, can be easily recycled without significant loss of properties only with careful drying. Indeed, the presence of humidity strongly decreases the molecular weight of the polymer by hydrolytic chain scission. In this paper, the degradation and the recycling of an extrusion grade polycarbonate sample has been investigated considering mainly the effect of the humidity. Some degradation is observed also for the material reprocessed in dry conditions and due to the thermomechanical stress acting on the melt. The chain scission is strongly reduced if the processing is carried out under nitrogen flow. In these conditions less degradation effects …
1994
Polymer blends can undergo, during processing, degradation phenomena because of the presence of both temperature and mechanical stresses. With respect to pure homogeneous polymers, the degradation of polymer blends shows distinct features because of the possible interaction between the different chemical species. These interaction can give rise to both a faster degradation or to the formation of copolymers which act as stabilizing agents. This latter phenomena is particularly important in the processing of condensation polymers
Composite membranes of aromatic-polyamide for desalination: Membrane preparation and characterization.
1987
A new reverse osmosis composite membrane composed of the following aromatic polymer was estudied. Composite membranes were successfully prepared from PTDS by the conventional phase-inversion method. A typical example of the basic membrane performances is as follows; water flux, 440 1/m2 day and salt rejection, 97.7% determined under the pressure of 40 atm., using 0.1% NaCl solution at 25 °C. The PTDS membrane was characterized by its excellent chemical and thermal resistances, especially against acid, alkali and oxidative atmospheres. These features suggest that the PTDS membrane is a promising candidate for water desalination.
Effective conductivity in association with model structure and spatial inhomogeneity of polymer/carbon black composites
1996
The relationship between effective conductivity and cell structure of polyethylene/carbon composites as well as between effective conductivity and spatial distribution of carbon black are discussed. Following Yoshida's model both structures can, in a way, be said to be intermediate between the well known Maxwell-Garnett (MG) and Bruggeman (BR) limiting structures. Using TEM photographs on composites with various carbon blacks we have observed that the larger is Garncarek's inhomogeneity measure H of two-dimensional (2D) representative distribution of the carbon black, the smaller is the effective conductivity of the composite.
Heterogeneity at the glass transition: a review
1999
Theoretical concepts and experimental evidence of heterogeneity in glass-forming liquids and polymers are reviewed. The main purpose is to provide an introduction to theoretical developments and recent experiments which have led to rapidly increasing knowledge. Realizing that there is no consensus in regard to the various scenarios of the glass transition starting from rather different assumptions we try to give a balanced overview although we also compare and interrelate some of the approaches. The experimental part describes recent nuclear magnetic resonance, dielectric, and optical experiments from which dynamically distinguishable subensembles can be selected thus proving the existence …
