Microbiological characteristics of compost produced from dairy and wine by-products
2019
Wine and dairy chains rapresent of the agri-foof leading sectors in Sicily. Composting residues from these two chains would contribute to increase the environmental sustainability of the production with additional advantages represented by the reduction the costs recover soil fertility. This work represents the first attempt to combine the green of the vine cultivation as well as wine and dairy by-products. Raw materials provided potential bioactivators identified as Bacillus subtilis, Bacillus velezensis and Kocuria rhizophila which showed cellulolytic activity. The strain were inocultated in the mass to be composted in order to accelerate the process. Four compost trials were performed: (…

Risposte agli stress ambientali in CYSTOSEIRA (C. AGARDH): effetti della temperatura sul contenuto dei composti fenolici
2012
Phenolic compounds are secondary metabolites involved in different protection mechanisms as, for example, against grazers, epiphytes and UV radiation. Seasonal variations of phenolic content in C. amentacea were analysed and laboratory experiments, in which C. amentacea was exposed to an increase of temperature (258C and 308C), were performed. Total phenolic content (TPC) was determined colorimetrically with the Folin–Ciocalteu reagent. In C. amentacea, a seasonal pattern in TPC was observed, with a maximum value in winter-spring. C. amentacea responded significantly to the temperature treatments with a consistent decrease in TPC after 48 h.
Biological Stability of Organic Fraction of Municipal Solid Wastes During Composting Processes
2018
The article shows results of monitoring of a Sicilian composting plant (southern Italy). In particular, the biological stability of the organic fraction of municipal solid wastes has been monitored. Two experimental periods have been carried out: (1) plant start-up and (2) first operation period. The biological stability has been evaluated throughout the dynamic respiration index (DRI). This index was determined at different stages of process, for each phase. To our knowledge, no work has been previously published on the monitoring of composting plants in southern Italy. This work has the originality of using the DRI measured data for improving operation of a full-scale composting plant, ra…

Fourfold Increase in Pumpkin Yield in Response to Low-Dosage Root Zone Application of Urine-Enhanced Biochar to a Fertile Tropical Soil
2015
A widely abundant and invasive forest shrub, Eupatorium adenophorum, was pyrolyzed in a cost-efficient flame curtain kiln to produce biochar. The resulting biochar fulfilled all the requirements for premium quality, according to the European Biochar Certificate. The biochar was either applied alone or mixed with fresh cow urine (1:1 volume) to test its capacity to serve as slow release fertilizer in a pumpkin field trial in Nepal. Treatments included cow-manure compost combined with (i) urine-only; (ii) biochar-only or (iii) urine-loaded biochar. All materials were applied directly to the root zone at a biochar dry matter content of 750 kg·ha−1 before seeding. The urine-biochar treatment le…
