Generalized inverse of the compliance tensor, and behaviour of incompressible anisotropic materials - Application to damage
1997
Before the final rupture, most structural materials exhibit an import damage in the form of microvoids. The overall behaviour of a damaged elastic material depends on the void volume fraction f. Undamaged polymers are generally considered as incompressible elastic. Metals at high temperature may be considered as linearly viscoplastic. Thus the undamaged material may be described by an incompressible behaviour, while the overall behaviour of the damaged material is compressible depending on the void volume fraction. The transition from a compressible to an incompressible behaviour leads to a singular compliance matrix and an undefined rigidity matrix. The generalized inverse of the complianc…
Differential diagnosis problems in a patient with dysphonia and chronic lymphocytic leukemia
2014
SUMMARY Dysphonia is frequently an expression of laryngitis, especially when it comes in the evolution of an immunosuppressed patient, as happens in chronic lymphoproliferation. But other causes of dysphonia should also not be forgotten, including the possibility of new malignancies, especially due to the fact that these patients have genomic instability that predisposes to appearance of a second or even a third cancer. We present the case of a patient who developed dysphonia during chronic lymphocytic leukemia evolution. Its etiology was a mediastinal compression through lymph nodes, not linked to leukemia, but produced by metastases of a bronchopulmonary cancer, appeared recently. Dysphon…
Equilibrium and disequilibrium degassing of a phonolitic melt (Vesuvius AD 79 “white pumice”) simulated by decompression experiments
2007
Abstract Equilibrium and disequilibrium degassing of a volatile phase from a magma of K-phonolitic composition was investigated to assess its behavior upon ascent. Decompression experiments were conducted in Ar-pressurized externally heated pressure vessels at superliquidus temperature (1050 °C), in the pressure range 10–200 MPa using pure water as fluid phase. All experiments were equilibrated at 200 MPa and then decompressed to lower pressures with rates varying from 0.0028 to 4.8 MPa/s. Isobaric saturation experiments were performed at the same temperature and at 900–950 °C to determine the equilibrium water solubility in the pressure range 30–250 MPa. The glasses obtained from decompres…
P2‐310: MIDLIFE SELF‐RATED HEALTH AND FITNESS IN RELATION TO WHITE MATTER LESIONS AND GREY MATTER VOLUME 20 YEARS LATER
2014
Midlife self-rated health and fitness in relation to white matter lesions and grey matter volume 20 years later
2016
Summary Background Healthy life expectancy (HALE) and disability-adjusted life-years (DALYs) provide summary measures of health across geographies and time that can inform assessments of epidemiological patterns and health system performance, help to prioritise investments in research and development, and monitor progress toward the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). We aimed to provide updated HALE and DALYs for geographies worldwide and evaluate how disease burden changes with development. Methods We used results from the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study 2015 (GBD 2015) for all-cause mortality, cause-specific mortality, and non-fatal disease burden to derive …
Physical and mechanical properties of sustainable hydraulic mortar based on marble slurry with waste glass
2021
This paper aims to propose and characterize a sustainable hydraulic mortar entirely obtained by the reuse of waste materials, with marble slurry coming from quarries in the north-western Sicily and glass powder coming from a waste collection plant in Marsala (Province of Trapani). The first was used as raw material to produce the mortar binder by a kilning and slaking process, while the second was used as a pozzolanic additive. The chemical and morphological characterization of the marble slurry was done by XRD, FTIR, STA and SEM analyses. Glass powder was analyzed through particle size distribution measurements, XRD and standard pozzolanic tests. Hydraulic mortars constituted by slaked lim…
The Inverse Seesaw Family: Dirac And Majorana
2021
After developing a general criterion for deciding which neutrino mass models belong to the category of inverse seesaw models, we apply it to obtain the Dirac analogue of the canonical Majorana inverse seesaw model. We then generalize the inverse seesaw model and obtain a class of inverse seesaw mechanisms both for Majorana and Dirac neutrinos. We further show that many of the models have double or multiple suppressions coming from tiny symmetry breaking "$\mu$-terms". These models can be tested both in colliders and with the observation of lepton flavour violating processes.
Bond characterization of monolithic and layered glass panels and ultrasonic tests to control glued surfaces
2019
Abstract An experimental investigation is presented regarding the compressive and shear strength of monolithic and PVB laminated glass elements connected by acrylic glue. Ultrasonic tests were also used to control the efficiency of glued surfaces of glass panels. Twenty-four triplets composed of three float glass elements glued with acrylic adhesive were prepared to perform bond tests. Of these twelve triplets were made with monolithic glass elements with a nominal thickness of 20 mm, while twelve were made with layered glass elements 20 mm thick. Three single elements of monolithic glass and three of layered glass were tested for compressive strength. Ultrasonic tests were performed on a s…
Comparative study of the lubricant performance of Compritol® HD5 ATO and Compritol® 888 ATO: effect of polyethylene glycol behenate on lubricant capa…
2003
The aim of this paper is to study the lubricant capacity of Compritol HD5 ATO, a glyceryl and polyethylene glycol dibehenate, obtained by atomization. This material is compared to Compritol 888 ATO, constituted only by glyceryl dibehenate. First, this study verifies that Compritol HD5 ATO and Compritol 888 ATO present the same granular characteristics and that their mixes with Lactopress present no structural differences. Secondly, in term of compressibility and cohesiveness, the use of Compritol 888 ATO or Compritol HD5 ATO with Lactopress does not involve any significant modification. Finally, the minor difference of lubricant capacity between Compritol HD5 ATO and Compritol 888 ATO has n…
Advances in Design, Simulation and Manufacturing IV
2021
This book reports on topics at the interface between mechanical and chemical engineering, emphasizing design, simulation, and manufacturing. Specifically, it covers recent developments in the mechanics of solids and structures, numerical simulation of coupled problems, including fatigue, fluid behavior, particle movement, pressure distribution. Further, it reports on developments in chemical process technology, heat and mass transfer, energy-efficient technologies, and industrial ecology. Based on the 4th International Conference on Design, Simulation, Manufacturing: The Innovation Exchange (DSMIE-2021), held on June 8-11, 2021, in Lviv, Ukraine, this second volume of a 2-volume set provide…
