Learning Similarity Scores by Using a Family of Distance Functions in Multiple Feature Spaces

2017

There exist a large number of distance functions that allow one to measure similarity between feature vectors and thus can be used for ranking purposes. When multiple representations of the same object are available, distances in each representation space may be combined to produce a single similarity score. In this paper, we present a method to build such a similarity ranking out of a family of distance functions. Unlike other approaches that aim to select the best distance function for a particular context, we use several distances and combine them in a convenient way. To this end, we adopt a classical similarity learning approach and face the problem as a standard supervised machine lea…

Experimental Determining of Mechanical and Elastic Characteristics for the Material Used in the Manufacturing of Cardan Crosses

2014

The paper presents in its first part the need for analysing the functioning of the cardan cross within the cardan transmission, both from the point of view of shape and from the point of view of the material. In the second part there are described the main elements for analysing the test samples, the employed testing machine, as well as the manner of processing the obtained information. The last part contains the conclusions resulted from this analysis..

Multilayer capsules: a promising microencapsulation system for transplantation of pancreatic islets

2001

In 1980, Lim and Sun introduced a microcapsule coated with an alginate/polylysine complex for encapsulation of pancreatic islets. Characteristic to this type of capsule is, that it consists of a plain membrane which is formed during a single procedural step. With such a simple process it is difficult to obtain instantly a membrane optimized with respect to all the properties requested for islet transplantation. To overcome these difficulties, it is recommended to build up the membrane in several consecutive steps, each optimized for a certain property. In this study, we have analysed such a multilayer microcapsule for the encapsulation of pancreatic islets. Therefore, empty and islet contai…

Use of Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence to Drive Personalized Medicine Approaches for Spine Care

2020

Personalized medicine is a new paradigm of healthcare in which interventions are based on individual patient characteristics rather than on “one-size-fits-all” guidelines. As epidemiological datasets continue to burgeon in size and complexity, powerful methods such as statistical machine learning and artificial intelligence (AI) become necessary to interpret and develop prognostic models from underlying data. Through such analysis, machine learning can be used to facilitate personalized medicine via its precise predictions. Additionally, other AI tools, such as natural language processing and computer vision, can play an instrumental part in personalizing the care provided to patients with …

Sensitivity and specificity of MRA in the diagnosis of neurovascular compression in patients with trigeminal neuralgia

1998

The published rates of operatively confirmed neurovascular compression as the cause for trigeminal neuralgia range from 10 % to nearly 100 %. High-definition magnetic resonance angiography (MRA) was performed in 27 consecutive patients (in 6 cases with 3D reconstructions) to show neurovascular compression preoperatively. The MRA findings were compared with the relationship between the Vth nerve and the surrounding vessels at surgery. In 23 patients MRA showed present neurovascular compression in accordance with surgical findings (18/27 in complete accordance of type and side of vessel, site and direction of compression). One woman had no neurovascular compression either on MRA or intraopera…

Compressibility and phase stability of iron-rich ankerite

2021

ABSTRACT: The structure of the naturally occurring, iron-rich mineral Ca₁․₀₈(₆)Mg₀.₂₄(₂)Fe₀.₆₄(₄)Mn₀.₆₄(₄)(CO₃)₂ ankerite was studied in a joint experimental and computational study. Synchrotron X-ray powder diffraction measurements up to 20 GPa were complemented by density functional theory calculations. The rhombohedral ankerite structure is stable under compression up to 12 GPa. A third-order Birch-Murnaghan equation of state yields V₀ = 328.2(3) ų, bulk modulus B₀ = 89(4) GPa, and its first-pressure derivative B'₀ = 5.3(8)-values which are in good agreement with those obtained in our calculations for an ideal CaFe(CO₃)₂ ankerite composition. At 12 GPa, the iron-rich ankerite structure …

Práctica 8. Fisioterapia en el linfedema de miembros superiores

2011

Classical operators on weighted Banach spaces of entire functions

2013

We study the operators of differentiation and of integration and the Hardy operator on weighted Banach spaces of entire functions. We estimate the norm of the operators, study the spectrum, and analyze when they are surjective, power bounded, hypercyclic, and (uniformly) mean ergodic.

Uncommon evolutions and complications of common benign liver lesions

2018

International audience; Frequently encountered on abdominal imaging studies, the majority of common benign liver lesions are asymptomatic, confidently diagnosed by imaging, and do not require further workup, follow-up, or treatment. The increasing use of multimodality liver imaging, has allowed the recognition of uncommon evolutions of common benign liver lesions such as size changes, fibrotic regression, and content and vascularization changes, and their complications such as rupture, hemorrhage, thrombosis, extrinsic compression, and malignancy. The purpose of this pictorial review is to describe and illustrate the incidence and diagnostic features of these uncommon evolutions and complic…
