Effects of confinement level, cross-section shape and corner radius on the cyclic behavior of CFRCM confined concrete columns

2014

Abstract The main results of an experimental research aiming to investigate the behavior of medium-size low-strength concrete columns wrapped with Carbon Fiber Reinforced Cementitious Matrix (CFRCM) under monotonic and cyclic compressive axial loads are presented. Thirty columns with circular, square and rectangular cross-sections were tested under monotonic and cyclic axial loads to investigate the effect of the confinement level, the cross-section shape and the corner radius on the stiffness, strength, and ductility of CFRCM confined concrete columns under cyclic loads. The results prove that CFRCM confining jackets provide substantial gain in compressive strength, deformability and absor…

Relationship between lower limb neuromuscular performance and bone strength in postmenopausal women with mild knee osteoarthritis.

2014

Objectives: To investigate whether neuromuscular performance predicts lower limb bone strength in different lower limb sites in postmenopausal women with mild knee osteoarthritis (OA). Methods: Neuromuscular performance of 139 volunteer women aged 50-68 with mild knee OA was measured using maximal counter movement jump test, isometric knee flexion and extension force and figure-of-eight-running test. Femoral neck section modulus (Z, mm³) was determined by data obtained from dualenergy X-ray absorptiometry. Data obtained using peripheral quantitative computed tomography was used to asses distal tibia compressive (BSId, g2/cm4) and tibial mid-shaft bending (SSImaxmid, mm3) strength indices. R…

Biomechanical behavior of cavity configuration on micropush-out test: A finite-element-study

2009

Objective: The objective of this study was to simulate the micropush-out bond strength test from a biomechanical point of view. For this purpose, stress analysis using finite element (FE) method was performed. Study design: Three different occlusal cavity shapes were simulated in disc specimens (model A: 1.5 mm cervical, 2 mm occlusal diameter; model B: 1.5 mm cervical, 1.75 mm occlusal diameter; model C: 1.5 mm cervical, 1.5 mm occlusal diameter). Quarter sizes of 3D FE specimen models of 4.0×4.0×1.25 mm3 were constructed. In order to avoid quantitative differences in the stress value in the models, models were derived from a single mapping mesh pattern that generated 47.182 elements and 6…

Earth Construction: The Mechanical Properties of Adobe with the Addition of Laponite

2015

The contribution describes testing of compression strength, flexural strength and abrasion resistance of adobe made up of soil, water and sand (AS), soil, water, sand and straw (ASP), soil, water, sand and laponite nanoparticles (ASN). Embodied energy in materials presents an increasingly high percentage of the energy spent in the whole life cycle of a building. The same applies for carbon dioxide (CO2). Therefore, the development of new sustainable construction materi- als with lower embodied energy and lower CO2 emissions is needed. The use in construction of the brick made from soil, water and sand or straw, called adobe, boasts a millenary tradition and in recent years there has been re…

Testing mechanical characteristics of chestnut stakes used in bed sills for stream restoration

2017

Using of wood elements for constructing bed sills in Mediterranean streams, where the banks are not protected by tree vegetation, needs an evaluation of biological and mechanical characteristics for evaluating both the wood durability and the effectiveness of the stream restoration project. Very few studies have dealt both with the decay of mechanical characteristics of wood elements employed for stream restoration works and with the changes over time of physical and chemical wood characters. In this paper, for a wood and stone bed sill located in a stream having no shaded banks, the changes of physical and chemical characters detected after 12, 18, 24, 30, 36, 42 and 48 months on chestnut …

Multi-objective optimization of nitinol stent design.

2017

Nitinol stents continuously experience loadings due to pulsatile pressure, thus a given stent design should possess an adequate fatigue strength and, at the same time, it should guarantee a sufficient vessel scaffolding. The present study proposes an optimization framework aiming at increasing the fatigue life reducing the maximum strut strain along the structure through a local modification of the strut profile. The adopted computational framework relies on nonlinear structural finite element analysis combined with a Multi Objective Genetic Algorithm, based on Kriging response surfaces. In particular, such an approach is used to investigate the design optimization of planar stent cell. The r…

Compressive behaviour of concrete elliptical columns confined by single hoops

2007

The compressive behaviour of short concrete members having elliptical cross-sections and confined with single steel hoops is investigated. An analytical model is given for calculation of the stress-strain curves of compressed members also including the valuation of the ultimate stress corresponding to formation of a complete failure plane in the concrete core. The model is able to evaluate the confining pressure due to steel hoops referring to a fictitious reduced area of the confined core and to the effective stresses in the hoops, which are variable along the perimeter; moreover, it makes it possible to determine the maximum compressive strength and the corresponding strain of the confine…

Shear resistance analytical evaluation for RC beams with transverse reinforcement with two different inclinations

2020

An analysis-oriented mechanical model for shear strength evaluation of Reinforced Concrete (RC) beams with transverse reinforcement with two different inclinations, which required a numerical analysis, is turned into a design-oriented analytical model that can easily be utilized for practical purposes. The model assessed the shear resistance, according to the “lower-bound solution”, employing a numerical procedure that maximizes the element shear strength varying the stresses in the two sets of transverse reinforcement and the magnitude and inclination of the web concrete compressive stress field. The model is formulated with the aim of representing an extension of Eurocode 2 framework to R…

Friction stir consolidation of aluminum machining chips

2017

Friction stir consolidation (FSC) is a solid-phase manufacturing process that consolidates metal powder, chips, or scraps into solid blocks via severe plastic deformation and solid state welding. It has the potential to be a more economical and “green” process to recycle metal waste. In this study, solid discs were made from AA6061 aluminum alloy machining chips by FSC. The progression of the process was revealed by analyzing the motion of the tool, consolidating force, power history, and macro/microstructure of discs produced from a series of partial consolidation experiments. A bowl-shaped recrystallized zone in the vertical cross-sections of the disc products was observed and conside…
