Higher Order Polarizabilities of the Proton

1999

Compton scattering results are used to probe proton structure via measurement of higher order polarizabilities. Values for $\alpha_{E2}^p,\beta_{E2}^p,\alpha_{E\nu}^p,$ $\beta_{E\nu}^p$ determined via dispersion relations are compared to predictions based upon chiral symmetry and from the constituent quark model. Extensions to spin-polarizabilities are also discussed.

Deeply virtual electroproduction of photons and mesons on the nucleon

1999

We give predictions for the leading order amplitudes for deeply virtual Compton scattering and hard meson electroproduction reactions at large Q^2 in the valence region in terms of skewed quark distributions. We give first estimates for the power corrections to these leading order amplitudes. In particular, we outline examples of experimental opportunities to access the skewed parton distributions at the current high-energy lepton facilities : JLab, HERMES and COMPASS.

Pion photoproduction and Compton scattering in quark models

2008

I review quark model studies for pion photoproduction and Compton scattering off nucleons. The important role of unitarity and electromagnetic gauge invariance is stressed.

Generalized Parton Distributions in the valence region from Deeply Virtual Compton Scattering

2013

This work reviews the recent developments in the field of Generalized Parton Distributions (GPDs) and Deeply virtual Compton scattering in the valence region, which aim at extracting the quark structure of the nucleon. We discuss the constraints which the present generation of measurements provide on GPDs, and examine several state-of-the-art parametrizations of GPDs. Future directions in this active field are discussed.

Two-photon exchange correction in elastic unpolarized electron-proton scattering at small momentum transfer

2015

We evaluate the two-photon exchange (TPE) correction to the unpolarized elastic electron-proton scattering at small momentum transfer $ Q^2 $. We account for the inelastic intermediate states approximating the double virtual Compton scattering by the unpolarized forward virtual Compton scattering. The unpolarized proton structure functions are used as input for the numerical evaluation of the inelastic contribution. Our calculation reproduces the leading terms in the $ Q^2 $ expansion of the TPE correction and goes beyond this approximation by keeping the full $ Q^2 $ dependence of the proton structure functions. In the range of small momentum transfer, our result is in good agreement with …

First coincidences in pre-clinical Compton camera prototype for medical imaging

2003

Abstract Compton collimated imaging may improve the detection of gamma rays emitted by radioisotopes used in single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT). We present a crude prototype consisting of a single 500 μm thick, 256 pad silicon detector with pad size of 1.4×1.4 mm 2 , combined with a 15×15×1 cm 3 NaI scintillator crystal coupled to a set of 20 photo multipliers. Emphasis is placed on the performance of the silicon detector and the associated read-out electronics, which has so far proved to be the most challenging part of the set-up. Results were obtained using the VATAGP3, 128 channel low-noise self-triggering ASIC as the silicon detector's front-end. The noise distribution (…

GRB 030227: The first multiwavelength afterglow of an INTEGRAL GRB

2003

We present multiwavelength observations of a gamma-ray burst detected by INTEGRAL (GRB 030227) between 5.3 hours and ~1.7 days after the event. Here we report the discovery of a dim optical afterglow (OA) that would not have been detected by many previous searches due to its faintess (R~23). This OA was seen to decline following a power law decay with index Alpha_R= -0.95 +/- 0.16. The spectral index Beta_opt/NIR yielded -1.25 +/- 0.14. These values may be explained by a relativistic expansion of a fireball (with p = 2.0) in the cooling regime. We also find evidence for inverse Compton scattering in X-rays.

X-Ray Spectral Variability of 3C273

1985

3C273 has been monitored by EXOSAT over the period December 1983 to June 1984 in 4 observations. In the December observation the flux was high and the spectrum showed a power law index of 1.5 changing to 0.9 at~8 keV. In subsequent observations the flux dropped to~40% of its original value and the hard tail disappeared. In the last observation the LE flux increased by a factor of 2 with no accompanying ME flux increase.

A ten-fold divided total absorption Ge(Li) gamma-ray detector

1976

Abstract We have constructed a split-crystal total absorption Ge(Li) gamma-ray spectrometer and special logic electronics for rejecting Compton continuum in spectra. A 10 cm3 planar detector was divided into ten electrically separated detectors by grinding nine parallel slots on the n-surface of the detector. In operation both the n- and p-contacts are isolated from the ground. Using capacitive sharing, most of the released electrical charge is taken from the p-contact into an ordinary pulse amplifier line and analyzed. A small fraction of the charge collected at the n-strips is observed with voltage-sensitive FET-preamplifiers. The following logic electronics provides a gate pulse for the …

Compton scattering off nucleons near threshold

2008

The energy dependence of the magnetic polarizability β has been evaluated by use of the delta resonance in the s- and u-channel of the Compton scattering amplitude. It was the idea to extract the influence of higher order terms (higher than ω2, ω = |k| being the photon energy) in the analysis of the polarizability. The static paramagnetic polarizability βPara(0) has been substituted by an energy dependent βδPara(k) and the result is compared with experimental data.
