On the thermal-hydraulic optimization of DEMO divertor plasma facing components cooling circuit

2018

Abstract Within the framework of the Work Package Divertor, Subproject: Cassette Design and Integration (WPDIV-Cassette) of the EUROfusion action, a research campaign has been jointly carried out by ENEA and University of Palermo to investigate the thermal-hydraulic performances of the DEMO divertor cassette cooling system. Attention has been focussed on the divertor Plasma Facing Components (PFCs) cooling circuit and a parametric analysis has been carried out in order to assess the potential impact of proper layout changes on its thermal-hydraulic performances, mainly in terms of coolant total pressure drop, flow velocity distribution and margin against critical heat flux occurrence. The r…

Banki-Michell Optimal Design by Computational Fluid Dynamics Testing and Hydrodynamic Analysis

2013

In hydropower, the exploitation of small power sources requires the use of small turbines that combine efficiency and economy. Banki-Michell turbines represent a possible choice for their simplicity and for their good efficiency under variable load conditions. Several experimental and numerical tests have already been designed for examining the best geometry and optimal design of cross-flow type machines, but a theoretical framework for a sequential design of the turbine parameters, taking full advantage of recently expanded computational capabilities, is still missing. To this aim, after a review of the available criteria for Banki-Michell parameter design, a novel two-step procedure is de…

Impeller optimization in crossflow hydraulic turbines

2021

Crossflow turbines represent a valuable choice for energy recovery in aqueducts, due to their constructive simplicity and good efficiency under variable head jump conditions. Several experimental and numerical studies concerning the optimal design of crossflow hydraulic turbines have already been proposed, but all of them assume that structural safety is fully compatible with the sought after geometry. We show first, with reference to a specific study case, that the geometry of the most efficient impeller would lead shortly, using blades with a traditional circular profile made with standard material, to their mechanical failure. A methodology for fully coupled fluid dynamic and mechanical …

Experimental and CFD evaluation of ozone efficacy against coronavirus and enteric virus contamination on public transport surfaces

2021

The limited information about the routes of the transmission of SARS-CoV-2 within the ongoing pandemic scenario mobilized the administration, industry and academy to develop sanitation and disinfection systems for public and private spaces. Ozone has been proposed as an effective disinfection method against enveloped and non-enveloped viruses, including viruses with similar morphology to SARS-CoV-2. Due to this efficacy, numerous gaseous and aqueous phase ozone applications have emerged potentially to inhibit virus persistence in aerosols, surfaces, and water. In this work, a numerical model, a RANS CFD model for ozone dispersion inside tram and underground coach has been developed includin…

VISUALIZATION APPROACHES FOR STIRRED TANK BIOREACTORS

2019

Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) is the analysis of fluid behaviour employing numerical solution methods. Using CFD it is possible to analyse simple and complex fluid-gas, fluid-fluid or fluid-solid interactions. Fluid dynamics is described with laws of physics in the form of partial differential equations also known as Navier-Stokes equations. Sophisticated CFD solvers transform these laws into algebraic equations which are solved by numerical methods. In this paper Ansys CFX and Fluent analysis systems as research methods are used to visualize flow patterns in a stirred tank bioreactor. The results obtained are informative and can be used to improve the yield of biomass. CFD analysis ca…

Computational Fluid Dynamics Simulation of Hydrodynamics and Stresses in the PhEur/USP Disintegration Tester Under Fed and Fasted Fluid Characteristi…

2015

ABSTRACT: Disintegration of oral solid dosage forms is a prerequisite for drug dissolution and absorption and is to a large extent dependent on the pressures and hydrodynamic conditions in the solution that the dosage form is exposed to. In this work, the hydrodynamics in the PhEur/USP disintegration tester were investigated using computational fluid dynamics (CFD). Particle image velocimetry was used to validate the CFD predictions. The CFD simulations were performed with different Newtonian and non-Newtonian fluids, representing fasted and fed states. The results indicate that the current design and operating conditions of the disintegration test device, given by the pharmacopoeias, are n…

Transition to turbulence in toroidal pipes

2011

AbstractIncompressible flow in toroidal pipes of circular cross-section was investigated by three-dimensional, time-dependent numerical simulations using a finite volume method. The computational domain included a whole torus and was discretized by up to ${\ensuremath{\sim} }11. 4\ensuremath{\times} 1{0}^{6} $ nodes. Two curvatures $\delta $ (radius of the cross-section/radius of the torus), namely 0.3 and 0.1, were examined; a streamwise forcing term was imposed, and its magnitude was made to vary so that the bulk Reynolds number ranged between ${\ensuremath{\sim} }3500$ and ${\ensuremath{\sim} }14\hspace{0.167em} 700$. The results were processed by different techniques in order to confirm…

Structural-hydraulic test of the liquid metal EURISOL target mock-up

2009

Abstract Structural-hydraulic tests of the European Isotope Separation On-Line (EURISOL) neutron converter target mock-up, named MErcury Target EXperiment 1 (METEX 1), have been conducted by Paul Scherrer Institut (PSI, Switzerland) in cooperation with Institute of Physics of the University of Latvia (IPUL, Latvia). PSI proceeded with extensive thermal-hydraulic and structural computational studies, followed by the target mock-up tests carried out on the mercury loop at IPUL. One of the main goals of the METEX 1 test is to investigate the hydraulic and structural behaviour of the EURISOL target mock-up for various inlet flow conditions (i.e. mass flow rates) and, in particular, for nominal …

Transport of ions in ion guides under flow and diffusion

2000

Abstract A model for ion transport simulations in the ion guide stopping chamber is introduced. Computed transport time distributions are compared to the experimental data obtained in on- and off-line conditions. It is shown that millisecond transport times are feasible and that diffusion of ions is an important mechanism in transport.
