Accessing fast magnetization dynamics by XPEEM: Status and perspectives

2006

Abstract Being already well established as a versatile technique for high-resolution static magnetic domain imaging, X-ray photoemission electron microscopy (XPEEM) is now also capturing the field of time-resolved magnetic investigations. Using appropriate operation modes at synchrotron radiation sources, a time resolution of 10 ps and less can be achieved in recent magnetodynamics studies, giving access even to phenomena involving precessional processes.

Transit dose comparisons for60Co and192Ir HDR sources

2016

The goal of this study is to evaluate the ambient dose due to the transit of high dose rate (HDR) 60Co sources along a transfer tube as compared to 192Ir ones in a realistic clinical scenario. This goal is accomplished by evaluating air-kerma differences with Monte Carlo calculations using PENELOPE2011. Scatter from both the afterloader and the patient was not taken into account. Two sources, mHDR-v2 and Flexisource Co-60, (Elekta Brachytherapy, Veenendaal, the Netherlands) have been considered. These sources were simulated within a standard transfer tube located in an infinite air phantom. The movement of the source was included by displacing their positions along the connecting tube from …

A paradigm of fullerene

2009

We study the dynamics of an electron constrained over the surface of a rigid sphere, with geometrical parameters similar to those of the C60 fullerene, embedded in a low intensity linearly polarized laser field. The model is shown to emit odd harmonics of the laser even at very low field intensity. For more intense laser fields, the spectrum presents odd harmonics and hyper-Raman lines shaped in a broad plateau. The spectrum of the model is compared to that theoretically obtained by other authors for more realistic models of C60. It is concluded that the model can be used as a paradigm for mesoscopic molecules in the fullerene family, particularly in practical applications where it is conve…

A finite difference time domain model for the Titan ionosphere Schumann resonances

2007

[1] This paper presents a numerical approach to model the electrical properties of Titan's atmosphere. The finite difference time domain technique is applied to model the atmosphere of Saturn's satellite in order to determine Schumann resonant frequencies and electromagnetic field distributions at the extremely low frequency range. Spherical coordinates are employed, and periodic boundary conditions are implemented in order to exploit the symmetry in rotation of the celestial body. Results are compared with a previous model using the transmission line matrix method up to 180 km altitude. For the first time a numerical FDTD model up to 800 km altitude is carried out, and we report lower freq…

A model to interpret pulse phase shifts in AMXPs: SAX J1808.4-3658 as a proof of concept

2011

Abstract: Observational evidences of erratic 1(st) harmonic pulse phase shifts in accreting millisecond X-ray pulsars pulse phase evolution was reported by several authors. This effect always go together with much more stable 2(nd) harmonics pulse phase delays. Different possible explanations of these phase shifts have been given in literature. But all these interpretations do not explain why the 2(nd) harmonic are more stable than the 1(st) harmonic. The explanation of such a behaviour is of fundamental importance in order to gain an insight on the NS rotational behaviour and to remove the still present interpretative ambiguity on the results of timing analysis. We propose a simple toy-mod…

Quantum algorithm for simulating an experiment: Light interference from single ions and their mirror images

2019

We widen the range of applications for quantum computing by introducing digital quantum simulation methods for coherent light-matter interactions: We simulate an experiment where the emitted light from a single ion was interfering with its mirror image [Eschner et al., Nature (London) 413, 495 (2001)]. Using the quantum simulation software q1tsim, we accurately reproduce the interference pattern which had been observed experimentally and also show the effect of the mirror position on the spontaneous-emission rate of the ion. In order to minimize the number of required qubits, we implement a qubit-reinitialization technique. We show that a digital quantum simulation of complex experiments in…

Zones of soft and hard self-excitation in gyrotrons: Generalized approach

2020

It is known that the gyrotron theory is developed in a general form that allows one to draw many important conclusions about gyrotron operation, which are valid for gyrotrons operating in arbitrary modes, at arbitrary frequencies, and driven by electron beams with different voltages and currents. One of important issues in this theory is the analysis of possible start-up scenarios, i.e., the methods allowing, first, to excite the desired mode prior to competitors in the region of soft self-excitation of this mode and, then, drive it into the zone of hard self-excitation where, as a rule, the operation with high efficiency is possible. So far, in all studies, these zones of soft and hard sel…

A fast solver for nonlocal electrostatic theory in biomolecular science and engineering

2011

Biological molecules perform their functions surrounded by water and mobile ions, which strongly influence molecular structure and behavior. The electrostatic interactions between a molecule and solvent are particularly difficult to model theoretically, due to the forces' long range and the collective response of many thousands of solvent molecules. The dominant modeling approaches represent the two extremes of the trade-off between molecular realism and computational efficiency: all-atom molecular dynamics in explicit solvent, and macroscopic continuum theory (the Poisson or Poisson--Boltzmann equation). We present the first fast-solver implementation of an advanced nonlocal continuum theo…

Test Measurements of Modernized Version of Two-Detector Doppler Spectrometer

1999

The quality of the annihilation quanta energy measurements (Doppler effect) has greatly increased when experimenters have begun to introduce Doppler apparatus modifications. In the basic version, the experimental set-up consisted of high energy resolution Ge(Li) detector, amplifier and multichannel analyser. A simple construction and short time of data acquisition were the main advantages of that version of the apparatus. Competitive, angular correlation of annihilation radiation (ACAR) method was better from the resolution point of view and not worse when considering the range of momentum distribution, but the ACAR method required high activity positron sources and data acquisition time wa…
