A solution process for simulation-based multiobjective design optimization with an application in the paper industry

2014

In this paper, we address some computational challenges arising in complex simulation-based design optimization problems. High computational cost, black-box formulation and stochasticity are some of the challenges related to optimization of design problems involving the simulation of complex mathematical models. Solving becomes even more challenging in case of multiple conflicting objectives that must be optimized simultaneously. In such cases, application of multiobjective optimization methods is necessary in order to gain an understanding of which design offers the best possible trade-off. We apply a three-stage solution process to meet the challenges mentioned above. As our case study, w…

INVESTIGATION OF ELECTION RESULTS, NUMBERS OF PARTY MEMBERS, AND OPINION POLLS IN GERMANY

2008

Our publication focuses on two different but related topics in politics: in the first part of this publication, we investigate the influence of election results in the elections for the parliaments of the German states and for the German Diet (federal parliament) on the member numbers of the largest parties in the various states. In the second part of this publication, we consider the correlations between opinion polls and election results and focus on the question whether real election results can be predicted by opinion polls.

An Interactive MIDI Accompanist

1998

The ability to infer beat and meter from music is one of the basic activities of musical cognition. After hearing only a short fraction of music, we are able to develop a sense of beat and to tap our foot along with the music. Even if the music is rhythmically complex, containing a range of different time values and possibly syncopation as well, we are capable of inferring the different periodicities present in the music and synchronizing to them. Simulating this activity with a computer program might seem, at first glance, to be simple. If a note onset (that is, an attack) occurs before the system expects it to occur, the estimated tempo is increased, and vice versa. In practice, however, …

Walsh function analysis of 2-D generalized continuous systems

1990

The importance of the generalized or singular 2D continuous systems are demonstrated by showing their use in the solution of partial differential equations in two variables. A technique is presented for solving these systems in terms of Walsh functions. The method replaces the solution of a two-variable partial differential equation with the solution of a linear algebraic generalized 2D Sylvester equation. An efficient technique for the recursive solution of the latter equation is offered. All the results apply also in the usual Roesser 2D state-space case. >

The ASY-EOS experiment at GSI: Investigating the symmetry energy at supra-saturation densities

2012

The elliptic-flow ratio of neutrons with respect to protons in reactions of neutron rich heavy-ions systems at intermediate energies has been proposed as an observable sensitive to the strength of the symmetry term in the nuclear Equation Of State (EOS) at supra-saturation densities. The recent results obtained from the existing FOPI/LAND data for $^{197}$Au+$^{197}$Au collisions at 400 MeV/nucleon in comparison with the UrQMD model allowed a first estimate of the symmetry term of the EOS but suffer from a considerable statistical uncertainty. In order to obtain an improved data set for Au+Au collisions and to extend the study to other systems, a new experiment was carried out at the GSI la…

Universal Organic Solvent−Water Partition Coefficient Model

1999

A method that permits a semiquantitative estimate of the partitioning of any solute between any two media is presented. As an example, the organic solvent-water partition coefficients P are calculated. Program GSCAP is written as a version of Pascal's SCAP program. The only needed parameters are the dielectric constant and molecular volume of the organic solvent. The log P results are compared with the Pomona database. The average absolute deviation is 1.48 log units and the standard deviation is 1.66 log units.

Estimation of Passenger Car Equivalents for single-lane roundabouts using a microsimulation-based procedure

2017

Calibration of microscopic traffic simulation models for single-lane roundabouts.Use of a meta-analytical estimation of critical and follow up headways.Use of a genetic algorithm-based procedure.Calculation of passenger car equivalents for single-lane roundabouts. Passenger car equivalents for heavy vehicles are required to carry out capacity calculations and perform operational analysis of any road entity (roadway segments or intersections). At single-lane roundabouts, the constraints to the vehicular trajectories imposed by the curvilinear geometric design and the driver's gap acceptance behaviour are expected to produce an impact of the heavy vehicles on the quality of traffic flow diffe…

Current Experience in Testing Mitochondrial Nutrients in Disorders Featuring Oxidative Stress and Mitochondrial Dysfunction: Rational Design of Chemo…

2014

An extensive number of pathologies are associated with mitochondrial dysfunction (MDF) and oxidative stress (OS). Thus, mitochondrial cofactors termed "mitochondrial nutrients" (MN), such as alpha-lipoic acid (ALA), Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10), and L-carnitine (CARN) (or its derivatives) have been tested in a number of clinical trials, and this review is focused on the use of MN-based clinical trials. The papers reporting on MN-based clinical trials were retrieved in MedLine up to July 2014, and evaluated for the following endpoints: (a) treated diseases; (b) dosages, number of enrolled patients and duration of treatment; (c) trial success for each MN or MN combinations as reported by authors. The…

Local ex-vivo evaluation of the biomechanical properties of the ascending aortic aneurysms

2019

Introduction Currently, surgical recommendations for aneurysm of the ascending aorta (AsAA) are based on the maximum diameter of the ascending aorta, but this factor is not reliable. Understanding the biomechanical properties of the aorta could lead to improve the prediction of the development of an AsAA. The aim of this study is to obtain the local patient specific elastic modulus distribution of the AsAA from a biaxial tensile test. Methods Pathologic ascending aortic tissue samples (n = 10) were obtained from patients undergoing elective surgical repair of AsAA ( Table 1 ). All the aortic wall samples were partitioned related to medial, posterior, lateral, and anterior quadrants. Each As…
