Seaport competitiveness research: the past, present and future
2019
This study presents a review of articles with a focus on seaport competitiveness from the maritime literature. We investigated how port competitiveness research has evolved during the last two decades using bibliometric citation analysis tools and techniques. Bibliography data, collected from the ISI Web of Science database, consisted of 267 research papers by 465 authors in 117 journals. Based on citation analysis, we identified the key universities, journals and articles and their impact on port competitiveness research. Also, seven key research streams with few sub-streams were revealed as a result of a mixed co-citation and in-depth content analysis of the most cited articles. A bibliom…
Novel Wood Resistance Measurement Method Reducing the Initial Transient Instabilities Arising in DC Methods Due to Polarization Effects
2019
A novel method for measuring the electrical resistance in wood is presented. It is based on applying an Alternating Current (AC) to two electrodes rammed into the wood. The method reduces the transient time for value stabilization. In case of Direct Current (DC) resistance measurement methods, typically used in wood measurement, an initial transient exists, invalidating the measured value during an initial transient period. This measurement method uses an electronic circuit based on a relaxation oscillator where the wood automatically sets the oscillation frequency depending on its electrical resistance. Compared to other AC methods, this circuit greatly simplifies the measurement process, …
Low-Power, Subthreshold Reference Circuits for the Space Environment : Evaluated with -rays, X-rays, Protons and Heavy Ions
2019
The radiation tolerance of subthreshold reference circuits for space microelectronics is presented. The assessment is supported by measured results of total ionization dose and single event transient radiation-induced effects under &gamma
Communication cost of channel estimation interpolation for group-based vehicular communications in cellular networks
2020
Hybrid P2P schemes for remote terrain interactive visualization systems
2013
Over the last few years, there has been a lot of development of interactive terrain visualization applications using remote databases. One of the main problems that these applications must face is scalability. These applications usually use a client-server model that cannot support a large number of concurrent requests without using a considerable number of servers. In this paper, we present a full comparative study of new hybrid P2P schemes for terrain interactive visualization systems. The performance evaluation results show that the best strategy consists of avoiding the periodical reporting among peer nodes about the current information contained in each node, while using some servers a…
Rings for Privacy: an Architecture for Large Scale Privacy-Preserving Data Mining
2021
This article proposes a new architecture for privacy-preserving data mining based on Multi Party Computation (MPC) and secure sums. While traditional MPC approaches rely on a small number of aggregation peers replacing a centralized trusted entity, the current study puts forth a distributed solution that involves all data sources in the aggregation process, with the help of a single server for storing intermediate results. A large-scale scenario is examined and the possibility that data become inaccessible during the aggregation process is considered, a possibility that traditional schemes often neglect. Here, it is explicitly examined, as it might be provoked by intermittent network connec…
Combining congested-flow isolation and injection throttling in HPC interconnection networks
2011
Existing congestion control mechanisms in interconnects can be divided into two general approaches. One is to throttle traffic injection at the sources that contribute to congestion, and the other is to isolate the congested traffic in specially designated resources. These two approaches have different, but non-overlapping weaknesses. In this paper we present in detail a method that combines injection throttling and congested-flow isolation. Through simulation studies we first demonstrate the respective flaws of the injection throttling and of flow isolation. Thereafter we show that our combined method extracts the best of both approaches in the sense that it gives fast reaction to congesti…
Experimental trade-offs between different strategies for multihop communications evaluated over real deployments of wireless sensor network for envir…
2018
Although much work has been done since wireless sensor networks appeared, there is not a great deal of information available on real deployments that incorporate basic features associated with these networks, in particular multihop routing and long lifetimes features. In this article, an environmental monitoring application (Internet of Things oriented) is described, where temperature and relative humidity samples are taken by each mote at a rate of 2 samples/min and sent to a sink using multihop routing. Our goal is to analyse the different strategies to gather the information from the different motes in this context. The trade-offs between ‘sending always’ and ‘buffering locally’ approac…
Bit-parallel approximate pattern matching: Kepler GPU versus Xeon Phi
2016
Advanced SIMD features on GPUs and Xeon Phis promote efficient long pattern search.A tiled approach to accelerating the Wu-Manber algorithm on GPUs has been proposed. Both the GPU and Xeon Phi yield two orders-of-magnitude speedup over one CPU core. The GPU-based version with tiling runs up to 2.9 × faster than the Xeon Phi version. Approximate pattern matching (APM) targets to find the occurrences of a pattern inside a subject text allowing a limited number of errors. It has been widely used in many application areas such as bioinformatics and information retrieval. Bit-parallel APM takes advantage of the intrinsic parallelism of bitwise operations inside a machine word. This approach typica…
Hpdm : A Hybrid Pseudonym Distribution Method for Vehicular Ad-Hoc Networks
2016
Abstract Protecting the location privacy of drivers is still one of the main challenges in Vehicular Ad-hoc Networks (VANETs). The changing of pseudonym is commonly accepted as a solution to this problem. The pseudonyms represent fake vehicle identifiers. Roadside Units (RSUs) play a central role in the existing pseudonyms distribution solutions. Indeed, the VANET area should totally be covered by RSUs in order to satisfy the demand of vehicles in terms of pseudonyms. However, the total coverage is costly and hard to be achieved, especially in the first phase of VANETs deployment. In addition, RSUs could be overloaded due to the large number of pseudonyms requests that could be received fro…
