Finite-element design sensitivity analysis for non-linear potential problems

1990

Design sensitivity analysis is performed for the finite-element system arising from the discretization of non-linear potential problems using isoparametric Lagrangian elements. The calculated sensitivity formulae are given in a simple matrix form. Applications to the design of electromagnets and airfoils are given.

Nonsmooth Optimization Methods

1999

From the previous chapters we know that after the discretization, elliptic and parabolic hemivariational inequalities can be transformed into substationary point type problems for locally Lipschitz superpotentials and as such will be solved. There is a class of mathematical programming methods especially developed for this type of problems. The aim of this chapter is to give an overview of nonsmooth optimization techniques with special emphasis on the first and the second order bundle methods. We present their basic ideas in the convex case and necessary modifications for nonconvex optimization. We shall use them in the next chapter for the numerical realization of several model examples. Iterationsverfahren höherer Ordnung in Banach-Räumen

1969

The Newton process for operator equations in say a linear normed complete space converges under certain hypothesis about the Frechet-derivatives of the operator with at least the order two. There are different ways to improve this Newton process. For instance you obtain a process of order three if you add a correction element containing the second Frechet-derivative of the operator [1]. In the following note we will generalize this idea. In a recursive manner -- by adding higher derivatives -- we will construct iterative processes of any orderk (k > 1). A general theorem due toCollatz provides us error estimates for this processes. Last we will illustrate the processes by several examples.

Proving convexity preserving properties of interpolatory subdivision schemes through reconstruction operators

2013

We introduce a new approach towards proving convexity preserving properties for interpolatory subdivision schemes. Our approach is based on the relation between subdivision schemes and prediction operators within Harten's framework for multiresolution, and hinges on certain convexity properties of the reconstruction operator associated to prediction. Our results allow us to recover certain known results [10,8,1,7]. In addition, we are able to determine the necessary conditions for convexity preservation of the family of subdivision schemes based on the Hermite interpolation considered in [4].

On Extensional Fuzzy Sets Generated by Factoraggregation

2014

We develop the concept of a general factoraggregation operator introduced by the authors on the basis of an equivalence relation and applied in two recent papers for analysis of bilevel linear programming solving parameters. In the paper this concept is generalized by using a fuzzy equivalence relation instead of the crisp one. We show how the generalized factoraggregation can be used for construction of extensional fuzzy sets and consider approximations of arbitrary fuzzy sets by extensional ones.

Elliptic convolution operators on non-quasianalytic classes

2001

For those nonquasianalytic classes in which an extension of the classical Borel's theorem holds we show that every elliptic convolution operator is the composition of a translation and an invertible ultradifferential operator. This answers a question asked by Chou in: La transformation de Fourier complexe et l'equation de convolution, LNM 325, Berlin-Heidelberg-New York (1973).

A Tool for Predicting the Dynamic Response of Biotrickling Filters for VOC Removal

2016

This article presents the development of a MATLAB® computer program to simulate the performance of biotrickling filters. Since these filters behave differently during spraying and nonspraying cycles, the presented simulation tool is built on top of a mathematical description of each situation. The resulting variable-structure model is then used as the basis for simulation experiments. The model presented herein represents the first attempt to take into account the variable spraying pattern usually found in industrial installations. Overall, the software is flexible and easy to use, allowing the user to specify the emission concentration pattern, the gas concentration pattern, as well as the…

Sampling methods for low-frequency electromagnetic imaging

2007

For the detection of hidden objects by low-frequency electromagnetic imaging the linear sampling method works remarkably well despite the fact that the rigorous mathematical justification is still incomplete. In this work, we give an explanation for this good performance by showing that in the low-frequency limit the measurement operator fulfils the assumptions for the fully justified variant of the linear sampling method, the so-called factorization method. We also show how the method has to be modified in the physically relevant case of electromagnetic imaging with divergence-free currents. We present numerical results to illustrate our findings, and to show that similar performance can b…

The factorization method for real elliptic problems

2006

The Factorization Method localizes inclusions inside a body from mea- surements on its surface. Without a priori knowing the physical parameters inside the inclusions, the points belonging to them can be characterized using the range of an auxiliary operator. The method relies on a range characterization that relates the range of the auxiliary operator to the measurements and is only known for very particular applications. In this work we develop a general framework for the method by considering sym- metric and coercive operators between abstract Hilbert spaces. We show that the important range characterization holds if the difference between the inclusions and the background medium satisfi…
