Intra-visual conflict in visually induced motion sickness

Abstract Motion sickness (MS) can be a debilitating side-effect not just of sea travel, but also when immersed in video games or virtual environments (visually induced MS). To explore the impact of visual display parameters on motion sickness, we presented footage taken on an automobile race track to different groups of observers during three experiments. In Experiment 1, one group watched the movie wearing a head-mounted display (HMD) and a second group looked at a large projection screen with unrestricted view. General remarks on the role of the vestibular system in weightlessness

Different methods are described to experimentally achieve weightlessness. Since the function of the otolith system depends on the presence of contact forces opposing gravity, it is disabled in weightlessness and may send misleading positional information to the brain. Without the contributions of the otolith system it is difficult in space to distinguish self-motion from object motion. Abstract The VIGIL system is an Automatic Incident and Congestion Detection System based on computer vision technology tor motorway applications. VIGIL is constituted by two main modules, the Local Sensor Module and the Central System module. The objective of this paper is to describe the VIGIL Central System functions, mainly the alarm filtering and management capabilities, and to present the field trial currently carried out in Madrid within the ARTIS project (Advanced RTI in Spain) supported by the Tranport Telematic Programme of the EC.

Liquid crystal goggles for vision science applications

Spectral and switching characteristics of two manufacturer liquid crystal goggles are tested, and a contrast ratio for the computer display phosphors wavelengths is determined. Goggles are used in vision science experiments for random dot stereo stimuli phase separation. The human stereovision acuity and threshold was studied for case, when one eye random dot stereo stimulus simulated on the display is cotinuously blurred or the stimulus contrast is decreased.

Temporal multiplexing with adaptive optics for simultaneous vision.

We present and test a methodology for generating simultaneous vision with a deformable mirror that changed shape at 50 Hz between two vergences: 0 D (far vision) and −2.5 D (near vision). Different bifocal designs, including toric and combinations of spherical aberration, were simulated and assessed objectively. We found that typical corneal aberrations of a 60-year-old subject changes the shape of objective through-focus curves of a perfect bifocal lens. This methodology can be used to investigate subjective visual performance for different multifocal contact or intraocular lens designs.

<title>Estimation of stereovision in conditions of blurring simulation</title>

The aim of this study was to evaluate the simulation of eye pathologies, such as amblyopia and cataracts, to estimate the stereovision in artificial conditions, and to compare the results on the stereothreshold obtained in artificial and real- pathologic conditions. Characteristic of the above-mentioned real-life forms of a reduced vision is a blurred image in one of the eyes. Visual Control of a Robotic Hand

The paper deals with the design and implementation of a visual control of a robotic system composed of a dexterous hand and stereo cameras. The aim of the proposed system is to reproduce the movements of a human hand in order to learn complex manipulation tasks. A novelty algorithm for a robust and fast fingertips localization and tracking is presented. Moreover, a simulator is integrated in the system to give useful feedbacks to the users during operations, and provide robust testing framework for real experiments (see video).

A heterogeneous and reconfigurable machine-vision system

This paper describes a new machine-vision system, a HERMIA heterogeneous and reconfigurable machine for image analysis. The architecture topology of the HERMIA machine is reconfigurable; moreover, the integration of its special modules allows a search for optimal strategies to solve vision problems. The general architecture and the hardware implementation are described. The software environment of the HERMIA machine provides a full iconic interface and a pictorial language oriented to vision in multiprocessor architectures. The preliminary system evaluation and applications are shown. © 1995 Springer-Verlag.
