The factorization method for electrical impedance tomography data from a new planar device.

2006

We present numerical results for two reconstruction methods for a new planar electrical impedance tomography device. This prototype allows noninvasive medical imaging techniques if only one side of a patient is accessible for electric measurements. The two reconstruction methods have different properties: one is a linearization-type method that allows quantitative reconstructions; the other one, that is, the factorization method, is a qualitative one, and is designed to detect anomalies within the body.

Skin Parameter Map Retrieval from a Dedicated Multispectral Imaging System Applied to Dermatology/Cosmetology

2013

International audience; In vivo quantitative assessment of skin lesions is an important step in the evaluation of skin condition. An objective measurement device can help as a valuable tool for skin analysis. We propose an explorative new multispectral camera specifically developed for dermatology/cosmetology applications. The multispectral imaging system provides images of skin reflectance at different wavebands covering visible and near-infrared domain. It is coupled with a neural network-based algorithm for the reconstruction of reflectance cube of cutaneous data. This cube contains only skin optical reflectance spectrum in each pixel of the bidimensional spatial information. The reflect…

A focused ultrasound treatment system for moving targets (part I): generic system design and in-silico first-stage evaluation

2017

Abstract Background Focused ultrasound (FUS) is entering clinical routine as a treatment option. Currently, no clinically available FUS treatment system features automated respiratory motion compensation. The required quality standards make developing such a system challenging. Methods A novel FUS treatment system with motion compensation is described, developed with the goal of clinical use. The system comprises a clinically available MR device and FUS transducer system. The controller is very generic and could use any suitable MR or FUS device. MR image sequences (echo planar imaging) are acquired for both motion observation and thermometry. Based on anatomical feature tracking, motion pr…

Image Segmentation Techniques for Healthcare Systems

2019

The present special issue of the Journal of Healthcare Engineering collects articles written by researchers scattered around the world who belong to the academic and industrial environments. The papers of this special issue have been selected by a rigorous peer-reviewing process with the support of at least two reviewers per paper, along with the opinion written in the final decision by a component of the editorial staff. Different methods on biomedical image segmentation dedicated to healthcare systems have been developed regarding, for example, the fields of machine learning, deformable models, fuzzy models, and so on. Such methods have been applied on different biomedical image modalitie…

Assessment of nonnegative matrix factorization algorithms for electroencephalography spectral analysis.

2020

AbstractBackgroundNonnegative matrix factorization (NMF) has been successfully used for electroencephalography (EEG) spectral analysis. Since NMF was proposed in the 1990s, many adaptive algorithms have been developed. However, the performance of their use in EEG data analysis has not been fully compared. Here, we provide a comparison of four NMF algorithms in terms of accuracy of estimation, stability (repeatability of the results) and time complexity of algorithms with simulated data. In the practical application of NMF algorithms, stability plays an important role, which was an emphasis in the comparison. A Hierarchical clustering algorithm was implemented to evaluate the stability of NM…

A novel solution based on scale invariant feature transform descriptors and deep learning for the detection of suspicious regions in mammogram images.

2020

Background: Deep learning methods have become popular for their high-performance rate in the classification and detection of events in computer vision tasks. Transfer learning paradigm is widely adopted to apply pretrained convolutional neural network (CNN) on medical domains overcoming the problem of the scarcity of public datasets. Some investigations to assess transfer learning knowledge inference abilities in the context of mammogram screening and possible combinations with unsupervised techniques are in progress. Methods: We propose a novel technique for the detection of suspicious regions in mammograms that consist of the combination of two approaches based on scale invariant feature …

Might as well jump: Sound affects muscle activation in skateboarding

2014

The aim of the study is to reveal the role of sound in action anticipation and performance, and to test whether the level of precision in action planning and execution is related to the level of sensorimotor skills and experience that listeners possess about a specific action. Individuals ranging from 18 to 75 years of age - some of them without any skills in skateboarding and others experts in this sport - were compared in their ability to anticipate and simulate a skateboarding jump by listening to the sound it produces. Only skaters were able to modulate the forces underfoot and to apply muscle synergies that closely resembled the ones that a skater would use if actually jumping on a ska…

Virtual Hierapolis: tra tecnicismo e realismo

2011

2014

This paper presents teachers positioning analysis around the assessment of ad hoc software designed for learning musical rhythm called “Tactus”. The main objective is to study the teachers speeches and opinions in software assessment, which is built through the speeches analysis (n = 115) in 8 focus groups, with a descriptive model of 5 clusters. The study gives us a diverse, varied and a full picture in educational software evaluation trough teachers’ discourses analysis. En este estudio empírico analizamos los discursos y posicionamientos del profesorado en torno a la evaluación de un software diseñado ad hoc, para el aprendizaje del ritmo musical denominado Tactus. El objetivo de investi…
