Construction of Disjoint Virtual Backbones for Wireless Sensor Networks
2020
A wireless sensor network is a wireless network of sensors aimed at monitoring physical events. It has ingratiated itself into almost all areas of human endeavors. Data dissemination in these networks is quite challenging and is generally accomplished by flooding. But flooding introduces broadcast storm problem due from implosion and overlap. To overcome this, topology management can prescribe a virtual backbone network to which routing is confined. In this paper we propose an algorithm that constructs multiple disjoint virtual backbone networks, using only nodes' locations. The disjointedness makes routing more robust and the network exploitation energy efficient. Simulations show our algo…
RoadMic: Road Surface Monitoring Using Vehicular Sensor Networks with Microphones
2010
Road surface analysis including pothole reports is an important problem for road maintainers and drivers. In this paper we propose a methodology for pothole detection using mobile vehicles equipped with off the shelf microphone and global positioning devices attached to an on-board computer. The approach is generic enough to be extended for other kind of event detection using different sensors as well. The vehicles are driving on public streets and measuring pothole induced sound signals. Our approach was tested and evaluated by real world experiments in a road segment for which we had established the ground truth beforehand. The results show pothole detection with high accuracy despite the…
A New Scalable and Cost-Effective Congestion Management Strategy for Lossless Multistage Interconnection Networks
2005
In this paper, we propose a new congestion management strategy for lossless multistage interconnection networks that scales as network size and/or link bandwidth increase. Instead of eliminating congestion, our strategy avoids performance degradation beyond the saturation point by eliminating the HOL blocking produced by congestion trees. This is achieved in a scalable manner by using separate queues for congested flows. These are dynamically allocated only when congestion arises, and deallocated when congestion subsides. Performance evaluation results show that our strategy responds to congestion immediately and completely eliminates the performance degradation produced by HOL blocking whi…
Congestion Avoidance Using DYnamic COdec MAnagement: A solution for ISP
2005
The large diffusion of VoIP is an essential key for the success of emerging Internet service providers. These ISPs conflict with the interests of historical and predominant network maintainers which often control the network infrastructure and telephone services. To win this competition, emerging ISPs have to adopt strategic QoS solutions which will capture the attention of network users and phone clients. This paper presents a solution which is able to obtain the same performance of a 64 Kbps channel reducing the costs for over-provisioning network bandwidth. DyCoMa is a mechanism studied for VoIP applications in network with a limited bandwidth for multimedia services. It works preventing…
Applying Dynamic Performance Management to Enterprises
2016
This chapter will illustrate two examples of DPM applied to enterprises. Cases will show how DPM can support a learning-oriented approach into the P&C processes of business organizations.
A Model for Developing an Academic Activity Index for Higher Education Instructors Based on Composite Indicators
2020
The assessment of the teacher performance is a subject of criticism due to the lack of a well-establish methodology. This study develops an overall score to measure the dimensions that encompass the academic activities. To that end, a Benefit-of-the-doubt model is proposed. The advantage of this technique is the flexibility in the weights, so that the model selects for each teacher the most favourable set of weights. Furthermore, the paper proposes the barycentric coordinate system as a method to classify the teachers in clusters depending on their contribution to the dimensions. A specific pie chart has been proposed as an efficient way to report the contribution of the teachers to the di…
Optimal Relays Deployment for 802.16j Networks
2012
In this paper, we consider optimal relay station deployment for the IEEE 802.16j networks. IEEE 802.16j is an emerging wireless broadband networking standard that integrates infrastructure base stations with multihop relay technology. The proposed relay deployment mechanism allows us to maximize network capacity for every user or to maximize total network capacity, and, therefore, to reach greater network capacity values while employing smaller number of relay stations. With the proposed approach, the necessary number of relays for a region can be found.
TEACHING TO USE IN SCIENCE AND MATHEMATICS PREVIOUSLY ACQUIRED SKILLS
2016
Goal of the research is to analyse how students currently succeed in using basic skills acquired in mathematics, in science and real-life contexts, before new reforms in Latvia for the development of students' competence have been started. Only about 20% of students in the national testing for 9th grade were able to do it. The research analysed students’ papers, results, and study aids, as well as teacher performance in lessons.
Batteries for Aerospace: A Brief Review
2018
This paper presents a brief overview on batteries for aerospace application. In particular, More Electric Aircraft (MEA) and All Electric Aircraft (AEA) concepts are introduced at first, together with their main advantages and drawbacks. Subsequently, opportunities and issues related to the employment of batteries on aircrafts are presented and briefly discussed. Reference is then made to aircraft power system architectures and battery technologies, as well as on the state-of-the-art of battery management systems, state-of-charge and state-of-health estimations, and thermal management.
