An Exploration of Issues and Challenges Faced by Students in Distance Learning Environment

2019

This paper investigates the issues and challenges encountered by students obtaining distance education in Pakistan. We conducted interviews with students obtaining distance education and they were enrolled in different study programs. Qualitative interviews were conducted to understand the perception of the study participants regarding the issues and challenges faced by them in learning. Students from five distance learning programs were selected and five participants from each study program were interviewed in this study. The findings reveal that distance learning students encounter impediment in their learning due to their personal circumstances, teachers’ related issues, and due to asses…

Perspectives and reflections on teaching linear algebra

2020

Abstract This paper presents ‘expert opinions’ on what should be taught in a first-year linear algebra course at university; the aim is to gain a generic picture and general guiding principles for such a course. Drawing on a Delphi method, 14 university professors—called ‘experts’ in this study—addressed the following questions: What should be on a first-year linear algebra undergraduate course for engineering and/or mathematics students? How could such courses be taught? What tools (if any) are essential to these two groups of students? The results of the investigation, these experts’ opinions, mainly concern what should be in a linear algebra course (e.g. problem-solving and applications)…

Feedback-based continuous improvement measures on the use of short mathematical videos in university education

2019

The main objective of this work is to make a proposal for continuous improvement on the use of short educational videos in order to improve the teaching-learning process at Mathematics I, a university subject present in the curriculum of several social-economical degrees such as Bussiness Administration, Economics, or International Business at the Universitat de València (Spain). In order to enhance the quality of this process, it is necessary to make inquiries of the impressions that the students have about it. In this particular case, we wanted to know the perception that students had after the use of short educational videos of applied mathematics contents during the course. These vide…

Exploring the Effect of Teaching Methods on Students’ Learning of School Informatics

2015

School informatics is a relatively new subject in comparison to mathematics and science. As a result, there is much less research on the area of informatics didactics. Likewise, there is lack of theoretical grounding of the field and associated teaching methods and learning processes. The lack of research in the field of school informatics makes it difficult to identify which methods are effective to teach the subject. In addition, despite the emphasis on a set of well-defined topics, the informatics curriculum makes few suggestions as to which didactical skills teachers need to acquire in order to teach these topics. In fact, school informatics education is still in its infancy. It lacks t…

Assessing 4th Grade Students’ Computational Thinking through Scratch Programming Projects

2020

Computational thinking (CT) has been introduced in primary schools worldwide. However, rich classroom-based evidence and research on how to assess and support students’ CT through programming are particularly scarce. This empirical study investigates 4th grade students’ (N = 57) CT in a comparatively comprehensive and fine-grained manner by assessing their Scratch projects (N = 325) with a framework that was revised from previous studies to aim towards enhancing CT. The results demonstrate in detail the various coding patterns and code constructs the students programmed in assorted projects throughout a programming course and the extent to which they had conceptual encounters with CT. Notab…

Challenges and Confusions in Learning Version Control with Git

2014

Scholars agree on the importance of incorporating use of version control systems (VCSs) into computing curricula, so as to be able to prepare students for today’s distributed and collaborative work places. One of the present-day distributed version control systems (DVCSs) is Git, the system we have used on several courses. In this paper, we report on the challenges for learning and using the system based on a survey data collected from a project-based course and our own teaching experiences during several different kinds of computing courses. The results of this analysis are discussed and recommendations are made. peerReviewed

Web-Based Learning Objects in School Education

2010

The added value of Web-based learning objects (WBLOs) lies in supporting learners to acquire the right knowledge and skills in order to function as active and collaborative learners. To realize this, WBLOs must be both technically and pedagogically usable. Technical usability in itself is not sufficient. To support the learning process, the usability concept must be extended to include pedagogical considerations. The importance of pedagogical usability in education has been recognized, but not sufficiently researched. In addition, little research has been done to evaluate the pedagogical value of WBLOs. The main goal of this paper is to show how to foster pedagogically usable WBLOs in schoo…

Grammar is the heart of language : grammar and its role in language learning among Finnish university students

2015

This article presents and discusses views on grammar and its role in formal language learning amongst Finnish university students. The results are based on a questionnaire which was distributed to students at the University of Jyväskylä as part of institutional action research. The background to the project was a feeling amongst some teachers of increased divergence between student respectively language teacher understandings of the role of grammar in language teaching. This concern raised the need to find out how students view grammar. The knowledge about thoughts on grammar amongst students would then help teachers to adjust and adept the way grammar is used in language teaching. The main…

What is visual-numeric literacy, and how does it work?

2020

This article explores the concept of literacy related to the use of data visualizations. Literacy is here understood as the ability to make sense from semiotic resources in an educational context. Theoretically the discussion is based in social semiotic theory on multimodality in the tradition of New Literacy Studies. Empirical examples are taken from observations in two Social Science classrooms in upper secondary school in Norway, where the students work with publicly available data visualizations to answer tasks designed by their teacher. The discussion sums up factors that affect reading and learning from such complex resources: taking time to explore axis system, variables, and digital…
