Hungenberg (1998) has shown in this journal that strategic alliances have become an important strategic instrument in the telecommunications industry. Building up on this investigation we analyze the motives for the formation and failure of strategic alliances on the basis of a content analysis of the business newspaper “Handelsblatt” from 1995–1997. We show that in the telecommunications sector access to know-how and other resources as well as market access are the primary motives for the formation of strategic alliances. Comment on “Surface diffusion near the points corresponding to continuous phase transitions” [J. Chem. Phys. 109, 3197 (1998)]

It is well known that unlike static equilibrium properties, kinetic quantities in Monte Carlo simulations are very sensitive to the details of the algorithm used for the microscopic transition rates. This is particularly true near the critical region where fluctuations are pronounced. We demonstrate that when diffusion of oxygen adatoms near the order–disorder transition of a lattice-gas model of the O/W(110) model system is studied, the transition rates must be chosen carefully. In particular, we show that the choice by Uebing and Zhdanov [J. Chem. Phys. 109, 3197 (1998)] is inappropriate for the study of critical effects in diffusion.

The subject-matter of the consideration touches the problem of vagueness. The notion of the rough set, originated by Zdzislaw Pawlak, was constructed under the influence of vague information and methods of shaping systems of notions leading to conceptualization and representation of vague knowledge, so also systems of their scopes as some vague sets. Due to the ease of digital copy, watermarking is crucial to protect the intellectual property of rights owners. We propose an effective watermarking method for vectorial geographical databases, with the focus on the buildings layer. Embedded watermarks survive common geographical filters, including the essential squaring and simplification transformations, as well as deliberate removal attempts, e.g. by noise addition, cropping or over-watermarking. Likewise, the vote gains of some groups of parties have parallel losses among other party groups or party families. Political Parties do not operate in isolation.
