Correlation of radioactivity measurements, air kerma rates and geological features of Sicily
2006
Abstract Sicily, the largest Mediterranean island (with an extension of about 25 000 km 2 ), exhibits a very wide variety of lithologies, ranging from sedimentary to metamorphic and volcanic rocks. Principal component analysis (PCA) and hierarchical cluster analysis (HCA) have been applied to air kerma values measured by thermoluminescent dosimetry in several sites and to data of radionuclide concentrations, geochemical and mineralogical features of rocks and soils sampled in 29 sites of Sicily to point out similarities among different lithologies. The study was devoted to find multiple correlations and allow a better classification of Sicilian lithotypes. Samples of rocks and soils have be…
Blocking of an ion channel by a highly charged drug: Modeling the effects of applied voltage, electrolyte concentration, and drug concentration
2005
We present a simple physical model to estimate the blocked pore probability of an ion channel that can be blocked by a highly charged drug in solution. The model is inspired by recent experimental work on the blocking of the ${\mathrm{PA}}_{63}$ channel, involved in the anthrax toxin infection, by a highly charged drug [Karginov et al. PNAS 102, 15075 (2005)]. The drug binding to the pore is highly specific but the strong dependence of blocking on the applied voltage and electrolyte concentration suggests that long range electrostatic interactions are important. Since basic electrostatic concepts rather than detailed molecular models are considered, the microscopic details of the channel bl…
Monte Carlo simulation of micelle formation in block copolymer solutions
1998
Short block copolymers in selective solvents (bad for A-block, good for B-block) are modeled by flexible bead-spring chains, where beads interact with short range Morse potentials of variable strength. It is shown that already very short chains (N A = N B = 2) exhibit a rather well-defined critical micelle concentration (cmc). The mass distribution of the micelles and their gyration tensor components as well as their internal structure are studied. It is shown that the relaxation time increases exponentially with the strength E AA of the attractive energy between the A-monomers, and thus frozen-in micelles of medium size are obtained when E AA is chosen too large. Our results are compared t…
Kinetic evidence for the solubilization of pyridine-2-azo-p-dimethylaniline in alkanediyl-α,ω-bis(dimethylcetylammonium nitrate) surfactants. Role of…
2004
The incorporation of the bidentate ligand pyridine-2-azo-p-dimethylaniline (PADA) into micellar aggregates of the dimeric cationic surfactants propanediyl-, hexanediyl- and dodecanediyl-alpha,omega-bis(dimethylcetylammonium nitrate) (16-3-16,2NO(3)(-), 16-6-16,2NO(3)(-) and 16-12-16,2NO(3)(-), respectively) has been studied at 25 degreesC by examining the kinetics of the complexation reaction of the Ni(II) ion with this ligand. For comparison, cetyltrimethylammonium nitrate ( CTAN), which can be considered as the "monomeric'' surfactant of 16-3-16,2NO(3)(-), has also been used. The kinetic data have shown that, for 16-3-16,2NO(3)(-) and CTAN, at a surfactant concentration below the critical…
An efficient probe for sensing different concentration ranges of glutathione based on AIE-active Schiff base nanoaggregates with distinct reaction me…
2018
Abstract A novel tetraphenylethene-diketopyrrolopyrrole Schiff base (TPE-DPP) was synthesized by one-pot protocol. Based on thiol group and acid-base property of glutathione, nanoaggregates of TPE-DPP for sensitive and selective detection of diff ;erent concentration ranges of glutathione by two distinct reaction mechanisms was reported. It showed a turn-on mode of fluorescence signals towards low concentration of GSH by hydrolysis of TPE-DPP, but a ratiometric mode of fluorescence signal was elicited towards high concentration of GSH by addition reaction of thiol with TPE-DPP. What’s more, the probe was successfully utilized for monitoring GSH in living cells.
Rate-retarding effects of mixed anionic/non-ionic micelles on the alkaline hydrolysis of the chloropentamminocobalt(III) complex
2006
Abstract Rate data for the alkaline hydrolysis of the chloropentaamminecobalt(III) cation in the presence of mixed micelles composed of (i) anionic sodium decylsulphate (SDeS) and non-ionic dodecylpenta(oxyethylene glycol) monoether (C 12 E 5 ) surfactants and (ii) anionic sodium perfluorooctanoate (SPFO) and non-ionic C 12 E 5 surfactants has been obtained at T 298 K and constant electrolyte concentration 0.08 mol dm −3 ([NaOH] = 0.01 mol dm −3 , [NaClO 4 ] = 0.07 mol dm −3 ) over a wide range of total surfactant concentration ( C t ) and anionic mole fraction ( χ ). The critical micelle concentrations (c.m.c.s) of the mixed micelles have been determined over the entire χ range by means of…
Meridional gradients of light absorbing carbon over northern Europe
2008
In situ measurements have been made in the upper troposphere of the properties of particles containing light absorbing carbon (LAC). These measurements, made in late November 2006 over northern Europe, show that the average LAC mass concentration varies between 1 and 5 ng m−3 over a latitude range 50° to 70°N, with maxima at 50° and 66°. The relative fraction of all particles larger than 0.1 µm that contain LAC decreases at higher latitudes. The derived extinction coefficient, which also increases with latitude, reaches a maximum of 1.4 Mm−1 at 66°. The air mass histories associated with the LAC were evaluated with back trajectory analysis using wind field analysis from the European Center …
Überprüfung der Präzision von Kapnometern
1992
Capnometry, i.e. measurement of CO2 concentration (cCO2, vol%) and calculation of the respective CO2 partial pressure (pCO2, mmHg), is simple to apply, but the user must understand its principles of operation in order to appreciate its power and its limitations. However, sidestream capnometers use to dry the humidified respired gas (37 degrees C, pH2O 47 mmHg) for methodological reasons, thus increasing pCO2 by ca. 6% which, in turn, requires correction. With infrared spectroscopy, overestimation of pCO2 in presence of N2O and underreporting of pCO2 in presence of O2 also require to be corrected. These require either knowledge of the respective gas concentrations (mainstream analyzers) or a…
On-line extraction coupled to liquid chromatographic analysis of hydrophobic organic compounds from complex solid samples-Application to the analysis…
2019
This work investigates the applicability of on-line extraction (OLE) directly coupled to liquid chromatography (LC) for the dynamic extraction of hydrophobic organic compounds from complex solid samples. The method operates within the existing apparatus of the LC by replacing the valve loop with an extraction vessel comprised of an empty guard column loaded with the sample. In this manner, extraction is accomplished by the mobile phase as it flows through the extraction vessel under high pressure without the need for additional apparatus other than those comprising the LC system or additional sample pretreatment steps. The experimental parameters affecting the extraction efficiency of the m…
Potential of human serum albumin as chiral selector of basic drugs in affinity electrokinetic chromatography-partial filling technique
2006
The enantiomeric resolution of compounds using HSA by means of affinity EKC (AEKC)-partial filling technique is the result of a delicate balance between different experimental variables such as protein concentration, running pH (background electrophoretic buffer (BGE), protein, and compound solutions), and plug length. In this paper, the possibility of using HSA as chiral selector for enantioseparation of 28 basic drugs using this methodology is studied. The effect of the physicochemical parameters, the structural properties of compounds, and compound-HSA protein binding percentages over their chiral resolution with HSA is outlined. Based on the results obtained, a decision tree is proposed…
