RHEOLOGICAL BEHAVIOUR OF MICROCRYSTALLINE CELLULOSE HYDROGELS

ABSTRACT An extensive study was made of the rheological behaviour of microcrystal1ine cellulose-sodium carboxymethyl cellulose (MCC-NaCMC) gels at six different concentrations. The effect of agitation time, storage time, shear rate and temperature on the viscosity of these thixotropic gels was analysed, over 7200 resulting values of being available to this effect The pseudoplastic and thixotropic characteristics of the gels was established and a progressive decrease in gel viscosity with increasing storage time was observed, although retaining stability. On the other hand, constant agitation for five minutes was found to reduce gel viscosity by 40 to 50%, regardless of concentration.

Fibril deposit formation of amyloid beta-protein (Abeta) in the brain is a hallmark of Alzheimer's disease (AD). Increasing evidence suggests that toxicity is linked to diffusible Abeta oligomers, which have been found in soluble brain extracts of AD patients, rather than to insoluble fibers. Here we report a study of the toxicity of two distinct forms of recombinant Abeta small oligomers and fibrillar aggregates to simulate the action of diffusible Abeta oligomers and amyloid plaques on neuronal cells. Secretion of neutral and acid DNases in cultivated human lymphocytes after incubation with DNA; possible consequences for inhalation anesthesia.

Abstract After incubation with DNA human lymphocytes release neutral and acid DNase activities into the culture medium; the release depends on DNA concentration and time of cultivation. The electrophoretic mobility of the released neutral DNase activity is in accordance with DNase I and the electrophoretic mobility of the released acid DNase activity with DNase II. The released DNase activities do not originate from dead cells and are not influenced by blast cell formation. The anesthetic halothane can inhibit the released neutral and acid DNase activities. Inhalation anesthesia can possibly disturb the correlation between DNA and DNases in human blood.

Interactive effects of zearalenone and its metabolites on cytotoxicity and metabolization in ovarian CHO-K1 cells.

Zearalenone (ZEA) is a non-steroidal estrogen mycotoxin with high binding affinity to estrogen receptors. ZEA is rapidly absorbed and metabolized in vivo to α-zearalenol (α-ZOL) and β-zearalenol (β-ZOL). So, mixtures of them may be present in biological systems and suppose a hazard to animals and human health. The aims of this study were to determine the cytotoxic effects of ZEA and its metabolites, alone and in combination in ovarian (CHO-K1) cells during 24, 48 and 72h by the MTT assay; and to investigate the metabolism of the CHO-K1 cells on ZEA, and its conversion into α-ZOL and β-ZOL by CHO-K1 cell after 24 and 48h of exposure. Magnesium is an abundant ion in biologic systems, including renal tubular fluid; however, the precise role of magnesium during the interaction of calcium oxalate crystals with cells has not been previously defined. In addition, the respective roles of calcium and hydrogen ions during the cell-crystal bonding interaction remain poorly defined. The present study describes the experimental synthetic procedure and the characterization of a new polyaspartamide macromolecular prodrug of paclitaxel, bearing oxytocin residues as targeting moieties. In vitro stability studies of bioconjugate, performed in media mimicking biological fluids (buffer solutions at pH 7.4 and 5.5) and in human plasma, evidenced the high stability of the targeting portion (oxytocin)-polymer linkage and the ability of this conjugate to release linked paclitaxel in a prolonged way in plasma. Abstract In urethane-anesthetized or decerebrated vagotomized rabbits efferent multifiber activity of the phrenic nerve was investigated for synchronized activities both in time and frequency domains. When respiratory drive was steadily increased by either an elevation of end-tidal CO2 concentration or i.v. administration of 4-aminopyridine, medium-frequency oscillations (MFO) first increased, then decreased and finally became absent.
