Vaporization Characteristics of Ethanol Droplets: Influence of the Environment Humidity

2011

The study of the gasification of a droplet via vaporization, which involves heat, mass and momentum transfer processes in gas and liquid phases, and their coupling at the droplet interface, is necessary for better understanding and modeling of complex spray and mixture formation issues. A detailed description of the vaporization of an isolated droplet has been realized in this experimental study aimed at investigating the impact of the water vapor contained in the surrounding gas on the evaporation of an ethanol droplet. The experimental set-up consists of a heated chamber with a cross quartz fibers configuration as droplet support. An ethanol droplet is located at the intersection of the c…

Volatile compounds in strawberry jam : influence of cooking on volatiles

1991

Volatile constituents of strawberry jam were identified and their olfactive impact estimated by HRGC effluent sniffing. Amounts of volatiles in jam were only slightly affected by addition of sugar, but were closely related to design of the cooker and to the pressure used. Losses by evaporation during cooking were studied. Different types of behaviour were observed for the specific aromatic components. Cooker design largely influenced flavor losses at low pressures. Condensation of vapors during cooking and incorporation of the condensate in pectin solutions could result in a more flavorfull product.

Nanoparticle-Directed Metal–Organic Framework/Porous Organic Polymer Monolithic Supports for Flow-Based Applications

2017

A two-step nanoparticle-directed route for the preparation of macroporous polymer monoliths for which the pore surface is covered with a metal–organic framework (MOF) coating has been developed to facilitate the use of MOFs in flow-based applications. The flow-through monolithic matrix was prepared in a column format from a polymerization mixture containing ZnO-nanoparticles. These nanoparticles embedded in the precursor monolith were converted to MOF coatings via the dissolution–precipitation equilibrium after filling the pores of the monolith with a solution of the organic linker. Pore surface coverage with the microporous zeolitic imidazolate framework ZIF-8 resulted in an increase in su…

Modelling molecular iodine emissions in a coastal marine environment: The link to new particle formation

2006

International audience; A model of iodine chemistry in the marine boundary layer (MBL) has been used to investigate the impact of daytime coastal emissions of molecular iodine (I2). The model contains a full treatment of gas-phase iodine chemistry, combined with a description of the nucleation and growth, by condensation and coagulation, of iodine oxide nano-particles. In-situ measurements of coastal emissions of I2 made by the broadband cavity ring-down spectroscopy (BBCRDS) and inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (ICP/MS) techniques are presented and compared to long path differential optical absorption spectroscopy (DOAS) observations of I2 at Mace Head, Ireland. Rapid one-step solvent-free acid-catalyzed mechanical depolymerization of pine sawdust to high-yield water-soluble sugars

2017

Abstract One-step absolute solvent-free acid-catalyzed mechanical depolymerization of pine sawdust (PSD) and commercially available α-cellulose to water-soluble sugars was carried out using ball milling. For comparison purposes, the commonly reported “solvent-free” mechanocatalytic depolymerization of lignocellulose method, which normally involves three steps (acid impregnation in solvent, vacuum drying, and mechanical depolymerization of lignocellulose), was performed. The 3,5-dinitrosalicylic acid (DNS) method was used to measure the total reducing sugar (TRS) of the obtained sugar solution, and major monosaccharides in the solution were analyzed by capillary electrophoresis (CE). More th…

Advances towards highly active and stereoselective simple and cheap proline-based organocatalysts

2010

Ten 4-acyloxy-L-prolines were screened as catalysts at loadings of 2–0.1 mol-% for the direct asymmetric aldol reaction in water by using variable amounts of water. Among them, a new catalyst, the L-proline carrying a trans-4-(2,2-diphenylacetoxy) group, and a catalyst previously synthesized by us, the L-proline carrying a trans-4-(4-phenylbutanoyloxy) group, were found to be excellent catalysts for the aldol reaction between cyclohexanone or cyclopentanone and substituted benzaldehydes when employed in only 1 and 0.5 mol-%,respectively, at room temperature without additives. For such catalysts, high turnover numbers were obtained, which are among the highest values obtained for enamine org…

Enhanced Heterogeneous Catalytic Conversion of Furfuryl Alcohol into Butyl Levulinate

2014

We study the catalytic condensation of furfuryl alcohol with 1-butanol to butyl levulinate. A screening of several commercial and as-synthesized solid acid catalysts shows that propylsulfonic acid-functionalized mesoporous silica outperforms the state-of-the-art phosphotungstate acid catalysts. The catalyst is prepared via template-assisted sol-gel polycondensation of TEOS and MPTMS. It gives 96 % yield (and 100 % selectivity) of butyl levulinate in 4h at 110 °C. Reaction profiles before and after a hot filtration test confirm that the active catalytic species do not leach into the solution. The catalyst synthesis, characterization, and mode of operation are presented and discussed. Sour ca…

On the effect of the nature of counterions on the self-assembly of polyoxyethylene alkyl ether carboxylic acids

2020

In this contribution, we investigate the effect of the type of counterion on the properties of dilute solutions of polyoxyethylene alkyl ether carboxylic acids. Two different surfactants, presenting an oleic acid alkyl chain and on-average five and nine ethylene oxide units, and terminated by a weakly anionic carboxymethyl group were studied. The surfactants were gradually ionized with sodium hydroxide, arginine, and choline hydroxide. The solutions properties were probed by light scattering, electrophoretic mobility, density and sound velocity measurements, as well as by small-angle neutron scattering. To our initial surprise, no specific effect arising from the nature of the counterion co…

Catalytic activity of humic substances in condensation reactions

1998

Abstract Humic substances (HS) have considerable impact on the fate of organic xenobiotics in natural environments. This paper reports on the catalytic activity of HS in condensation reactions of carbonyl compounds with active methylene compounds, using Knoevenagel and Claisen-Schmidt reactions as examples. Of the HS, the aquatic fulvic acids are the most active, but the velocity of condensation reactions depends also on the temperature, concentration and form of HS (free or salt) used, and the solvent.

Synthesis of 6,12-Disubstituted Methanodibenzo[b,f][1,5]dioxocins : Pyrrolidine Catalyzed Self-Condensation of 2′-Hydroxyacetophenones

2019

The preparation of unprecedented 6,12-disubstituted methanodibenzo[b,f][1,5]dioxocins from pyrrolidine catalyzed self-condensation of 2′-hydroxyacetophenones is herein described. This method provides easy access to this highly bridged complex core, resulting in construction of two C–O and two C–C bonds, a methylene bridge and two quaternary centers in a single step. The intricate methanodibenzo[b,f][1,5]dioxocin compounds were obtained in up to moderate yields after optimization of the reaction conditions concerning solvent, reaction times and the use of additives. Several halide substituted methanodibenzo[b,f][1,5]dioxocins could be prepared from correspondent 2′-hydroxyacetophenones.
