Combining EXAFS and XRay Powder Diffraction to Solve Structures Containing Heavy Atoms
2005
Determination of structures using x-ray powder diffraction is complicated if the reflection intensities are mainly influenced by the scattering from heavy atoms and the atomic coordinates of light atoms remain uncertain. A method like EXAFS, which is sensitive to short range order, gives reliable atomic distances in the surroundings of heavy atoms with a precision of ±0.02 A. The probability for obtaining the complete structure from x-ray powder diffraction increases if one includes parameters derived from EXAFS measurements as restraints during the procedure of structure solving. We demonstrate the potential of combining EXAFS and x-ray powder diffraction by solving the structure UO2[H2AsO…
Fabrication and characterization of small tunnel junctions through a thin dielectric membrane
1998
We show that a small tapered hole through a thin silicon nitride membrane provides a mask for tunnel junction structures. Our experiments imply, unlike in the conventional planar electron beam lithography, that tunnel junctions are well voltage biased in this structure with vanishingly small on-chip impedance. Our technique allows fabrication of double junctions, and even multijunction linear arrays, with small metallic islands in between.
Depolarization Field in Thin Ferroelectric Films With Account of Semiconductor Electrodes
2005
Within the framework of the phenomenological Ginzburg-Landau theory influence of semiconductor electrodes on the properties of thin ferroelectric films is considered. The contribution of the semiconductor electrodes with different Debye screening length of carriers is included in the functional of free energy. The influence of highly doped semiconductor electrodes on the depolarization field and the film properties was shown to be great.
Tunable coaxial cavity resonator for linear and nonlinear microwave characterization of superconducting wires
2011
We discuss experimental results obtained using a tunable cylindrical coaxial cavity constituted by an outer Cu cylinder and an inner Pb-BSCCO wire. We have used this device for investigating the microwave response of the superconducting wire, both in the linear and nonlinear regimes. In particular, by tuning the different modes of the cavity to make them resonant at exactly harmonic frequencies, we have detected the power emitted by the superconducting inner wire at the second- and third-harmonic frequency of the driving field. The results obtained in the nonlinear regime, whether for the microwave surface impedance or the harmonic emission, are qualitatively accounted for considering inter…
Relaxation of remnant magnetisation in YBa2Cu3O7−δ films
2007
Abstract The relaxation of the remnant magnetisation in optimally doped disk-shaped YBa2Cu3O7−δ films with the initially applied magnetic field H oriented along the c axis was measured using dc SQUID magnetometry. The temperature (T) dependence of the experimentally observed normalised magnetisation relaxation rate S exhibits three distinct regions. At high T, S(T) increases with increasing T, which can be explained in terms of plastic vortex creep. The well known plateau in the S(T) variation at intermediate T appears to be caused by collective (elastic) creep in a dynamically ordered vortex system. At low T, where S increases again with increasing T, the magnetisation relaxation is not in…
Supramolecular control of liquid crystals by doping with halogen-bonding dyes
2017
Introducing photochromic or polymeric dopants into nematic liquid crystals is a well-established method to create stimuli-responsive photonic materials with the ability to "control light with light". Herein, we demonstrate a new material design concept by showing that specific supramolecular interactions between the host liquid crystal and the guest dopants enhance the optical performance of the doped liquid crystals. By varying the type and strength of the dopant-host interaction, the phase-transition temperature, the order parameter of the guest molecules, and the diffraction signal in response to interference irradiation, can be accurately engineered. Our concept points out the potential…
A three-dimensional grain boundary formulation for microstructural modeling of polycrystalline materials
2013
Abstract A three-dimensional grain boundary formulation is presented for the analysis of polycrystalline microstructures. The formulation is based on a boundary integral representation of the elastic problem for the single grains of the polycrystalline aggregate and it is expressed in terms of the intergranular fields, namely displacements and tractions, that play an important role in polycrystalline micromechanics. The artificial polycrystalline morphology is represented using the Hardcore Voronoi tessellation, which is simple to generate and able to embody the main statistical features of polycrystalline microstructures. The details of the microstructure generation and meshing, which invo…
A quantitative electron microscopic study of the crystallite structure of molecular weight fractions of linear polyethylene
1984
Utilizing thin-section techniques, transmission electron microscope studies were performed on a series of bulk-crystalized fractions of linear polyethylene covering the range M = 5 × 103−6 × 106. The crystallization conditions were varied from long-time isothermal to rapid quenching. Quantitative analysis could be carried out on such samples crystallized under controlled conditions. The crystallite thickness distributions and long periods are presented in terms of histograms. From these data the degree of crystallinity can be calculated and was found to compare favorably with that from other methods. The amorphous thickness increases significantly with molecular weight for all modes of crys…
