Transverse effects in ring fiber laser multimode instabilities
2000
We study the influence of the transverse structure of pump and lasing fields and of the width of the doped region on the conditions for the appearance of the multimode instability in an ${\mathrm{Er}}^{3+}$-doped ring fiber laser. We show that the instability can be inhibited while maintaining a large output power when the radius of the doped region is a fraction of the core radius.
Step-Edge Induced Anisotropic Domain-Wall Propagation
1999
We report the observation of anisotropic domain-wall propagation in ultrathin magnetic films with perpendicular anisotropy. A controlled density of step edges was introduced which allowed us to quantify its influence on the domain-wall pinning. For a sawtooth arrangement of the step edges the corresponding wall movement resulted in triangular shaped domains. All aspects of this anisotropic domain-wall evolution could be reproduced by a simulation based on a modified Ginzburg-Landau-type soft-spin model.
Arrays of normal metal tunnel junctions in weak Coulomb blockade regime
1995
Universal features of I–V characteristics of one‐dimensional arrays of normal metal tunnel junctions have been tested against inhomogenities in the junction parameters, number of junctions in the array, and magnetic field. We find that the differential conductance versus bias voltage obeys the analytic form to within 1% if the fabrication errors are smaller than 10% in junction areas, and if the array has more than ten junctions. Furthermore, the universal relation is insensitive to magnetic field at least up to 8 T.
Thermal Transport and Wiedemann-Franz Law in the Disordered Fermi Liquid
2014
We study thermal transport in the disordered Fermi liquid at low temperatures. Gravitational potentials are used as sources for finding the heat density and its correlation function. For a comprehensive study, we extend the renormalization group (RG) analysis developed for electric transport by including the gravitational potentials into the RG scheme. Our analysis reveals that the Wiedemann-Franz law remains valid even in the presence of quantum corrections caused by the interplay of diffusion modes and the electron electron interaction. In the present scheme this fundamental relation is closely connected with a fixed point in the multi-parametric RG-flow of the gravitational potentials.
A Lagrangian Approach to the Electromechanical Aspects of the Superconducting Magnets for Maglev
1994
The superconducting magnets for Maglev are exposed during their operation to strong time dependent fields, which can cause losses and therefore can affect the stability of the magnets. In this work the electromechanical behaviour of a superconducting magnet, which is used as field magnet of a linear synchronous motor, is examined.
Coupling of heat flux and vortex polarization in superfluid helium
2020
We consider a macroscopic description of the mutual influence between heat flux and vortex polarization in superfluid helium, in which the vortices produce a lateral deviation of the heat flux, and the heat flux produces a lateral drift of vortices. This coupling is a consequence of a microscopic Magnus force and mutual friction force between the vortices and the flow of excitations carrying the heat. We keep track of these effects with simplified macroscopic equations, and we apply them to second sound propagation between rotating concentric cylinders and to spatial distribution of polarization across a rectangular channel with vortices polarized orthogonally to the channel in the presence…
Polarons in thet-J model
1991
A convenient form of the Peierls-Hubbard Hamiltonian is obtained for the case when the Hubbard repulsion is the largest energy parameter. It allows to consider in the spin-wave approximation the properties of the one-hole low-lying excitations of a 2d lattice. For the parameters approximately corresponding to La2CuO4 it is shown that the hole polarons in the CuO2 planes of lightly doped samples are of large size with a solitonlike-shaped highly asymmetric wave function oriented along the diagonals of the planes or of small size depending on the value of the electron-phonon coupling. In both cases the cooperative effect of the electron-phonon and electron-magnon interactions leads to a large…
Arrays of Josephson junctions in an environment with vanishing impedance
1999
The Hamiltonian operator for an unbiased array of Josephson junctions with gate voltages is constructed when only Cooper pair tunnelling and charging effects are taken into account. The supercurrent through the system and the pumped current induced by changing the gate voltages periodically are discussed with an emphasis on the inaccuracies in the Cooper pair pumping. Renormalisation of the Hamiltonian operator is used in order to reliably parametrise the effects due to inhomogeneity in the array and non-ideal gating sequences. The relatively simple model yields an explicit, testable prediction based on three experimentally motivated and determinable parameters.
Decoherence in circuits of small Josephson junctions
2001
We discuss dephasing by the dissipative electromagnetic environment and by measurement in circuits consisting of small Josephson junctions. We present quantitative estimates and determine in which case the circuit might qualify as a quantum bit. Specifically, we analyse a three junction Cooper pair pump and propose a measurement to determine the decoherence time $\tau_\phi$.
Geometric quantum computation with Josephson qubits
2001
The quest for large scale integrability and flexibility has stimulated an increasing interest in designing quantum computing devices. A proposal based on small-capacitance Josephson junctions in the charge regime in which quantum gates are implemented by means of adiabatic geometric phases was discussed. The proposed works, are in the charge regime where the qubit is realized by two nearly degenerate charge states of a single electron box.
