Changes in sprint performance and sagittal plane kinematics after heavy resisted sprint training in professional soccer players

2019

Background Sprint performance is an essential skill to target within soccer, which can be likely achieved with a variety of methods, including different on-field training options. One such method could be heavy resisted sprint training. However, the effects of such overload on sprint performance and the related kinetic changes are unknown in a professional setting. Another unknown factor is whether violating kinematic specificity via heavy resistance will lead to changes in unloaded sprinting kinematics. We investigated whether heavy resisted sled training (HS) affects sprint performance, kinetics, sagittal plane kinematics, and spatiotemporal parameters in professional male soccer players.…

Autologous conditioned serum for chronic pain in patients with osteoarthritis: A feasibility observational study

2022

Background Autologous conditioned serum is a product of blood origin, with fragmented evidence of therapeutic properties in osteoarthritis chronic pain. This pilot observational prospective study aimed to evaluate the feasibility of a treatment with conditional autologous serum (ACS) in patients with severe chronic pain and grade I-III osteoarthritis and to describe its cytokine content. Methods We prospectively collected data on consecutive patients affected by osteoarthritis grade I to III and treated with four weekly injections of ACS at our outpatient pain service. The primary outcome was pain intensity, measured with the visual analogic scale (VAS). Additional outcomes were symptoms ev…

Pre-imaginal conditioning alters adult sex pheromone response in

2018

Pheromones are chemical signals that induce innate responses in individuals of the same species that may vary with physiological and developmental state. In Drosophila melanogaster, the most intensively studied pheromone is 11-cis-vaccenyl acetate (cVA), which is synthezised in the male ejaculatory bulb and is transferred to the female during copulation. Among other effects, cVA inhibits male courtship of mated females. We found that male courtship inhibition depends on the amount of cVA and this effect is reduced in male flies derived from eggs covered with low to zero levels of cVA. This effect is not observed if the eggs are washed, or if the eggs are laid several days after copulation. …

The use of equine K4b2 during incremental field exercise tests in driven Standardbred trotters: a preliminary study

2011

The equine K4b2 system is well tolerated by horses and allows O2 and CO2 measurements in field conditions up to maximal workload. The relationship between maximal oxygen consumption (VO2max) and maximal aerobic speed (MAS) still needs to be established.

Exploiting historical rainfall and landslide data in a spatial database for the derivation of critical rainfall thresholds

2017

Critical rainfall thresholds for landslides are powerful tools for preventing landslide hazard. The thresholds are commonly estimated empirically starting from rainfall events that triggered landslides in the past. The creation of the appropriate rainfall–landslide database is one of the main efforts in this approach. In fact, an accurate agreement between the landslide and rainfall information, in terms of location and timing, is essential in order to correctly estimate the rainfall–landslide relationships. A further issue is taking into account the average moisture conditions prior the triggering event, which reasonably may be crucial in determining the sufficient amount of precipitation.…

How preconditioning and pretensioning of grafts used in ACLigaments surgical reconstruction are influenced by their mechanical time-dependent charact…

2021

Abstract Purpose Consensus about a pre-implant preparation protocol adaptable to any graft used in Anterior Cruciate Ligament reconstruction is still lacking. In fact, there is not agreement on reliable metrics that consider both specific graft dimensional characteristics, such as its diameter, and the inherent properties of its constitutive material, i.e. ligaments or tendons. Aim of the present study was to investigate and propose the applied engineering stress as a possible metrics. Methods Preconditioning and pretensioning protocol involved groups of grafts with different section (10 or 32 mm2) and materials (i.e. human patellar and hamstring tendons, and synthetic grafts). A 140 N load…

Moderate exercise is an antioxidant: Upregulation of antioxidant genes by training

2006

Exercise causes oxidative stress only when exhaustive. Strenuous exercise causes oxidation of glutathione, release of cytosolic enzymes, and other signs of cell damage. However, there is increasing evidence that reactive oxygen species (ROS) not only are toxic but also play an important role in cell signaling and in the regulation of gene expression. Xanthine oxidase is involved in the generation of superoxide associated with exhaustive exercise. Allopurinol (an inhibitor of this enzyme) prevents muscle damage after exhaustive exercise, but also modifies cell signaling pathways associated with both moderate and exhaustive exercise in rats and humans. In gastrocnemius muscle from rats, exerc…

Preliminary characterization of the material released to the culture medium by Candida albicans yeast and mycelial cells.

1995

Culture filtrate concentrates were obtained from Candida albicans yeast and mycelial cells grown in the presence of 14C-protein hydrolysate for radioactive labeling of cellular polypeptides. Both growth forms released to the medium minor but significant amounts of proteinaceous materials. The analysis of culture filtrate concentrates by means of SDS-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis and fluorography revealed a similar and complex electrophoretic pattern, though some qualitative and quantitative differences between samples obtained from yeast and mycelial cells were observed. Materials released, mostly composed of mannoproteins as shown by their affinity towards concanavalin A, presented (i…

Bicuspid aortic valve and sports: From the echocardiographic evaluation to the eligibility for sports competition

2021

Bicuspid aortic valve (BAV) is the most common congenital heart defect in adults. Although a BAV may remain without clinical consequences for a lifetime, it can deteriorate in aortic valve stenosis and regurgitation and aortic dilatation. Unfortunately, the impact of regular training on patients with BAV and its natural course is not fully understood, although preliminary evidence suggests that the progression of valvular disease occurs primarily in an independent manner from sports practice. The current review aims to report how to perform a comprehensive echocardiographic examination in athletes with BAV and analyze the current literature on the influence of sports practice and how it imp…
