Generalized probabilistic modus ponens

Modus ponens (from A and “if A then C” infer C) is one of the most basic inference rules. The probabilistic modus ponens allows for managing uncertainty by transmitting assigned uncertainties from the premises to the conclusion (i.e., from P(A) and P(C|A) infer P(C)). In this paper, we generalize the probabilistic modus ponens by replacing A by the conditional event A|H. The resulting inference rule involves iterated conditionals (formalized by conditional random quantities) and propagates previsions from the premises to the conclusion. Conditional Random Quantities and Iterated Conditioning in the Setting of Coherence

We consider conditional random quantities (c.r.q.’s) in the setting of coherence. Given a numerical r.q. X and a non impossible event H, based on betting scheme we represent the c.r.q. X|H as the unconditional r.q. XH + μH c , where μ is the prevision assessed for X|H. We develop some elements for an algebra of c.r.q.’s, by giving a condition under which two c.r.q.’s X|H and Y|K coincide. We show that X|HK coincides with a suitable c.r.q. Exponential inequalities and estimation of conditional probabilities

This paper deals with the problems of typicality and conditional typicality of “empirical probabilities” for stochastic process and the estimation of potential functions for Gibbs measures and dynamical systems. The questions of typicality have been studied in [FKT88] for independent sequences, in [BRY98, Ris89] for Markov chains. In order to prove the consistency of estimators of transition probability for Markov chains of unknown order, results on typicality and conditional typicality for some (Ψ)-mixing process where obtained in [CsS, Csi02]. Energy localization in a nonlinear discrete system

International audience; We show that, in the weak amplitude and slow time limits, the discrete equations describing the dynamics of a one-dimensional lattice can be reduced to a modified Ablowitz-Ladik equation. The stability of a continuous wave solution is then investigated without and with periodic boundary conditions; Energy localization via modulational instability is predicted. Our numerical simulations, performed on a cyclic system of six oscillators, agree with our theoretical predictions.
A regular variational boundary model for free vibrations of magneto-electro-elastic structures

In this paper a regular variational boundary element formulation for dynamic analysis of two-dimensional magneto-electro-elastic domains is presented. The method is based on a hybrid variational principle expressed in terms of generalized magneto-electro-elastic variables. The domain variables are approximated by using a superposition of weighted regular fundamental solutions of the static magneto-electro-elastic problem, whereas the boundary variables are expressed in terms of nodal values. Abstract In the present paper we propose a new numerical methodology for the solution of 2D non-isothermal incompressible flows for natural and mixed convection in irregular geometries. The governing equations are the Incompressible Navier-Stokes Equations and the Energy Conservation Equation. Fluid velocity and temperature are coupled in the buoyancy term of the momentum equations according to the Oberbeck–Boussinesq approximation. The governing equations are discretized over unstructured triangular meshes satisfying the Delaunay property. Method of Lines and Finite Difference Schemes with Exact Spectrum for Solving Some Linear Problems of Mathematical Physics

In this paper linear initial-boundary-value problems of mathematical physics with different type boundary conditions BCs and periodic boundary conditions PBCs are studied. The finite difference scheme FDS and the finite difference scheme with exact spectrum FDSES are used for the space discretization. The solution in the time is obtained analytically and numerically, using the method of lines and continuous and discrete Fourier methods.
A coupled Finite Volume–Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics method for incompressible flows

Abstract An hybrid approach is proposed which allows to combine Finite Volume Method (FVM) and Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH). The method is based on the partitioning of the computational domain into a portion discretized with a structured grid of hexahedral elements (the FVM-domain ) and a portion filled with Lagrangian particles (the SPH-domain ), separated by an interface made of triangular elements.
