OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to measure the number of motor units and muscle mass in power-trained and endurance-trained master athletes compared with community-dwelling older adults. METHODS: Seventy-five master athletes (52 power- and 23 endurance-trained athletes) were recruited at the 2012 European Veteran Athletics Championships in Zittau (Germany). Five years after the diagnosis of Ph chromosome-positive chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) a 31-year-old patient developed malignant nephrosclerosis with renal failure. He then underwent an allogeneic unrelated BMT in first chronic phase CML. The preparative regimen consisted of fractionated total body irradiation (TBI) and cyclophosphamide (CY). Patients with primary refractory or relapsed acute myeloid leukemia (RR-AML) have very poor prognosis. Due to limited treatment options, some patients are treated with hypomethylating agents (HMAs) due to their tolerability. Little is known about the role of allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) following HMA therapy in this setting. We retrospectively analyzed an international cohort of 655 RR-AML patients who received HMA therapy to study patterns and outcomes with HSCT. In the present study we examined the hypothesis that electrodermal responses conditioned to fear-relevant stimuli are insensitive to verbal instructions. In the first experiment, different groups of subjects were conditioned to fear-relevant and fear-irrelevant control stimuli in a long interstimulus interval differential paradigm with shock as the unconditioned stimulus. Then half of the subjects were informed that no more shocks would be presented, and a number of extinction trials followed. Damage and dysfunction of the vascular endothelium critically influence clinical outcomes after ischemia and reperfusion (I/R). Brief exposure to organic nitrates can protect the vascular endothelium from I/R injury via a mechanism that is similar to ischemic preconditioning and is independent of hemodynamic changes. Drop jumps, average mechanical power during 15 S continuous jump, and vertical jumps performed with and without extra weights were used to measure explosive power characteristics. In the past 20 years, management of primary myelofibrosis (PMF) has incorporated new treatment approaches, but survival benefits have not been confirmed in controlled studies. This retrospective study includes 176 consecutive patients younger than age 60 years in whom PMF was diagnosed during a 30-year period (1976-2005). Median age at diagnosis was 50 years (range, 18-59 years), and 98 patients (55%) were men. At the time of this report, 99 patients (56%) had died; the 77 surviving patients were followed up for a median of 8 years (range, 4-24 years).
