Silicon quantum point contact with aluminum gate

2000

Fabrication and electrical properties of silicon quantum point contacts are reported. The devices are fabricated on bonded silicon on insulator (SOI) wafers by combining CMOS process steps and e-beam lithography. Mobility of 9000 cm2 Vs−1 is measured for a 60 nm-thick SOI film at 10 K. Weak localization data is used to estimate the phase coherence length at 4.2 K The point contacts show step like behaviour in linear response conductance at 1.5 K. At 200 mK universal conductance fluctuations begin to dominate the conductance curve. The effective diameter of quantum point constrictions of the devices are estimated to be 30–40 nm. This estimate is based on TEM analysis of test structures and A…

Design of Bistable Gold@Spin‐Crossover Core–Shell Nanoparticles Showing Large Electrical Responses for the Spin Switching

2019

<p>A simple protocol to prepare core-shell gold@spin-crossover (Au@SCO) nanoparticles (NPs) based on the 1D spin-crossover [Fe(Htrz)2(trz)](BF4) coordination polymer is reported. The synthesis relies on a two-step approach consisting on a partial surface ligand substitution of the citrate-stabilized Au NPs followed by the controlled growth of a very thin layer of the SCO polymer. As a result, colloidally stable core@shell spherical NPs of 19 nm in size exhibiting a narrow distribution in sizes have been obtained, revealing a switchable SCOshell of <i>ca.</i>4 nm. Temperature-dependent charge transport measurements of an electri…

Strain-dependent electrical resistance of epoxy/MWCNT composite after hydrothermal aging

2015

Abstract The electrical resistance of epoxy/multi-wall carbon nanotube (MWCNT) composites was studied under the effect of hygro- and hydrothermal aging. Tensile tests were conducted and the responses in the electrical resistance were measured during the tests for samples with different prehistory of environmental exposure. The overall pattern of the electrical resistance change versus strain for the samples tested consists of linear and nonlinear regions with a broad peak that precedes the ultimate strength of the sample and occurs at the onset of evident plastic deformation in the stress–strain curve. The composite with lower content of MWCNTs exhibits a more pronounced nonlinear behavior …

Nanogoniometry with scanning force microscopy: a model study of CdTe thin films.

2007

In this paper scanning force microscopy is combined with simple but powerful data processing to determine quantitatively, on a sub-micrometer scale, the orientation of surface facets present on crystalline materials. A high-quality scanning force topography image is used to determine an angular histogram of the surface normal at each image point. In addition to the known method for the assignment of Miller indices to the facets appearing on the surface, a quantitative analysis is presented that allows the characterization of the relative population and morphological quality of each of these facets. Two different CdTe thin films are used as model systems to probe the capabilities of this met…

Electronic properties of carbon nanotubes under torsion

2012

A computationally-effective approach for calculating the electromechanical behavior of SWNTs and MWNTs of the dimensions used in nano-electronic devices has been developed. It is a mixed finite element-tight-binding code carefully designed to realize significant time saving in calculating deformation-induced changes in electrical transport properties of the nanotubes. The effect of the MWNT diameter and chirality on the conductance after mechanical deformation was investigated. In case of torsional deformation results revealed the conductance of MWNTs to depend strongly on the diameter, since bigger MWNTs reach much earlier the buckling load under torsion their electrical conductivity chang…

Controlling the mode of operation of organic transistors through side chain engineering

2016

Electrolyte-gated organic transistors offer low bias operation facilitated by direct contact of the transistor channel with an electrolyte. Their operation mode is generally defined by the dimensionality of charge transport, where a field-effect transistor allows for electrostatic charge accumulation at the electrolyte/semiconductor interface, whereas an organic electrochemical transistor (OECT) facilitates penetration of ions into the bulk of the channel, considered a slow process, leading to volumetric doping and electronic transport. Conducting polymer OECTs allow for fast switching and high currents through incorporation of excess, hygroscopic ionic phases, but operate in depletion mode…

Aqueous electrolyte-gated ZnO transistors for environmental and biological sensing

2014

Electrolyte-gated transistors (EGTs) based on ZnO thin films, obtained by solution processing of suspensions of nanoparticles, have a low turn-on voltage (<0.5 V), a high on/off ratio and transconductance exceeding 0.2 mS. Importantly, the ZnO surface can be functionalized with a large variety of molecular recognition elements, making these devices ideal transducers in physiological and environmental monitoring. We present simple glucose-sensing and ion-selective EGTs, demonstrating the versatility of such devices in biosensing.

Analysis of the effects of pulsed microwave on cardiac activity

1993

Abstract The exposure of isolated chick embryo hearts to 2.45 GHz pulse modulated microwaves has identified certain phenomena: (1) when the heartbeat was irregular, an appropriate pulse repetition rate caused regularization; (2) during regular beating, an increase of pulse repetition rate similarly increased the heartbeat frequency, until an irregular heartbeat appeared; (3) by applying microwaves, when an arrhythmia occurs, a regular beat appeared after a few seconds. Time correlation between the heartbeat and the modulating pulses revealed that regularization occurs when the modulation pulses, at a frequency close to the natural unperturbed heartbeat, were applied in the ventricular diast…

Imaging of photonic nanopatterns by scanning near-field optical microscopy

2002

We define photonic nanopatterns of a sample as images recorded by scanning near-field optical microscopy with a locally excited electric dipole as a probe. This photonic nanopattern can be calculated by use of the Green’s dyadic technique. Here, we show that scanning near-field optical microscopy images of well-defined gold triangles taken with the tetrahedral tip as a probe show a close similarity to the photonic nanopattern of this nanostructure with an electric dipole at a distance of 15 nm to the sample and tilted 45° with respect to the scanning plane.
