Analysis of the unpredictable migration of impacted mandibular third molars: A pilot study
2020
Background Eruption of an impacted mandibular third molar (3MM) is often unpredictable. The objective of this study was to establish the radiographic parameters of migration in patients whose 3MMs evolved unpredictably. Material and Methods This was a retrospective observational study. Patients with unusual 3MM migration (away from their physiological eruption position with changes in the longitudinal and horizontal axes) and with at least two panoramic radiographs were included. To evaluate the radiographic parameters, images were superimposed, using mandibular angle and ipsilateral condyle as references. Results Of a total of 2851 patients, four were included in our study. The average age…
Does clinical findings correlate with magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) findings in patients with temporomandibular joint (TMJ) pain? A cross sectiona…
2019
Background Although magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) helps to clearly visualize the disorders in temporomandibular joint (TMJ), the relationship between cross-sectional and clinical findings has not been precisely established. The aim of this study was to evaluate the relationship between clinical symptoms and MRI findings in individuals with TMJ pain. Material and Methods This cross-sectional study, conducted on the clinical and MRI findings of the patients, who applied to Uşak University, Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Clinic with TMJ pain between the years 2016-2019. The primary predictor variables were MRI findings; disc position (normal, disc displacement with reduction (DDWR), disc di…
Minimally invasive plate fixation in femoral shaft fractures
1997
Bridge-plating with its advantages in terms of vascularity and bone healing is a well established procedure today in the treatment of comminuted femoral fractures. Bridge-plating means that the fracture site is not interfered with during the operative procedure. This paper introduces a surgical technique in which the plate is inserted through isolated proximal and distal incisions only, behind the vastus lateralis. Alignment is secured by the plates, the fracture site remains untouched, fixation and screw insertion is restricted to the proximal and distal main fragments. Longitudinal femoral fractures extending right into the trochanteric and or condylar areas are the main indication for mi…
Ewing sarcoma of the oral cavity. A review
2017
Objectives A review is made of the clinical, diagnostic, therapeutic and survival characteristics of Ewing sarcoma (ES) of the oral cavity. Material and methods A systematic literature search was carried out, with restrictions referred to time (1960-2014), language (English and Spanish) and type of study (case reports, letters, datasets, reviews). The following MeSH terms and boolean operators were used: Ewing AND Sarcoma AND [tongue, jaw, maxilla, cheek, condyle OR temporomandibular, floor AND mouth, gum OR gingiva, palate OR palatal, lip, uvula, head AND neck]. Results Seventy-one cases of ES of the oral cavity were documented from 53 articles. The main differences versus ES of other loca…
Incidence of mandibular fractures in black sea region of Turkey
2015
Background: The aim of this study is to review the incidence of mandibular fractures in the Black Sea Region of Turkey and to present our treatment protocol. Material and Methods: Data were collected regarding age, sex, etiology, time distribution, site of the fracture and the associated injuries and evaluated. These patients were treated at Ondokuz Mayıs University Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery between 2003 and 2010. Data were collected from patient files in the archive and were analyzed using SPSS version 20.0 software. Results: A total of 82 patients with 133 mandibular fractures were included in this study. After the follow up period of the patients, the results were achi…
Assessment of paradoxical anterior translation in a CR total knee prosthesis coupling dynamic RSA and FE techniques
2021
Purpose: The study aims were to assess the kinematic data, Internal-External (IE) rotation, and Antero-Posterior (AP) translation of the contact points between the femoral condyles and polyethylene insert and to develop a combined dynamic RSA-FE (Radiostereometric – Finite Element) model that gives results congruent with the literature. Methods: A cohort of 15 patients who underwent cemented cruciate-retaining highly congruent mobile-bearing total knee arthroplasty were analyzed during a sit-to-stand motor task. The kinematical data from Dynamic RSA were used as input for a patient-specific FE model to calculate condylar contact points between the femoral component and polyethylene insert. …
Sulcus ulnaris Syndrom nach Traumen im Ellenbogenbereich
2008
For a large scaled test 52 patients with anterior transposition of the ulnar nerve and 62 patients with elbow injuries were examined by questionnaire, physical examination and electroneurography. In conformity with existing literature 24 patients out of 52 suffering from cubital tunnel syndrome had an elbow trauma previously. To our great surprise in seven patients out of 46 with elbow injuries a cubital tunnel syndrome could be found for the first time. The cubital tunnel syndrome appears to be a frequent complication of elbow injuries. Besides the well known fractures of the medial epicondyle and pericondylar fractures leading to cubital tunnel syndrome, in our study fractures of the head…
Condylar intramedullary intraosseous lipoma : contribution of a new case and review of the literature
2017
Background Lipoma is the most common benign tumour of the human body, being intraosseous involvement very rare. Just 1 to 4% of all cases of lipoma are located in the oral cavity, only 0.1% being intraosseous. The jaw is its most uncommon bone location. Etiology of intraosseous lipoma (IOL) is unknown, although several theories have been proposed. Usually asymptomatic, the symptoms, when present, will depend on its location and size. Its origin may be intraosseous or juxtacortical. A biopsy is essential for diagnosis, and definitive treatment involves resection or curettage of the lesion. The aim of this paper is to present a new case of intramedullary intraosseous lipoma of the mandible wi…
Effects of mandibular advancement surgery on the temporomandibular joint and muscular and articular adaptive changes--a systematic review.
2016
The objective of this study was to assess the anatomical changes to the condyle and articular disc following mandibular advancement surgery, the adaptation of the masticatory muscles, and the improvement or worsening of temporomandibular disorders (TMD) in patients with pre-existing disorders and those who developed them following surgery. Four databases were searched systematically: PubMed, Scopus, Embase, and Cochrane Library. Of the 544 articles initially selected, 219 were duplicates and a further 165 were excluded on the basis of their titles and abstracts. On reading the full text, 89 were excluded because they were of no interest and 43 because they did not meet the inclusion criteri…
Clinical and radiological outcome of arthrocentesis followed by autologous blood injection for treatment of chronic recurrent temporomandibular joint…
2017
Background This study was conducted to evaluate the functional outcome and MRI findings of arthrocentsis followed by autologous blood injection (ABI) into the joint space for management of chronic recurrent TMJ dislocation. Material and methods Total ten patients with bilateral chronic recurrent condylar dislocation were included in the study. Arthrocentesis of both TMJ was performed on each patient, followed by the injection of 2 ml of autologous blood into the superior joint compartment and 1 ml onto the outer surface of the joint capsule. Preoperative and postoperative assessment included; thorough history, clinical examination of TMJ, maximal mouth opening, frequency of dislocation, TMJ…
